Day 1 - Istanbul
Upon arriving in Istanbul, we will arrange for your transfer to the hotel, where youll be welcomed to your exciting journey ahead. You'll then have some leisure time to explore your surroundings or unwind after your travels. In the afternoon, make sure to check the information boards in the hotel reception area for details about the start of your tour. This will help you get oriented and ready for the days to come. Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2 - Istanbul
On our second day in Istanbul, we'll embark on a captivating panoramic tour of this extraordinary city that bridges two continents. Our journey begins with a visit to the impressive Sleymaniye Mosque, the largest mosque in Istanbul, which exemplifies classical Ottoman architecture. We will then take in the historical city walls and the splendid views of the Golden Horn, before exploring the lively fishing district. From there, experience the iconic exterior of Hagia Sophia, a testament to the city's layered history.As the afternoon unfolds, we will transfer you to Taksim, Istanbul's dynamic commercial heart. Here, you can savour dinner at one of the numerous restaurants offering a variety of local and international cuisines. While in Taksim, you can enjoy a ride on the nostalgic tram that weaves through the district, or perhaps head to the Galata Tower for an added dose of history and stunning views over the city.
Day 3 - Istanbul - Ankara
We will begin our day with a visit to the magnificent Topkapi Palace, the former heart of the Ottoman Empires administration, renowned for its stunning courtyards and exquisite pavilions, with entry included. After soaking in the grandeur of the palace, we will embark on a two-hour private boat excursion along the Bosphorus. This exclusive journey will allow us to glide through the historic strait connecting the Black Sea with the Sea of Marmara, which beautifully divides Istanbul's European and Asian sides. As we sail, the energetic traffic of boats and ships will offer a fascinating spectacle. We will pass under two immense bridges linking Europe and Asia, while marvelling at the majestic Sultan's palaces, elegant wooden houses, and distinctive Ottoman architecture along the shores. Our boat trip concludes on the Asian side in the delightful skdar district, from where we continue our journey to the Anatolian Peninsula, arriving in Ankara. Dinner will be provided upon our arrival.
Day 4 - Ankara - Cappadocia
Following breakfast, we will explore Ankara, Turkey's vibrant capital and cultural hub, home to more than five million residents. Our itinerary includes a visit to the impressive Mausoleum of Ataturk, a monument dedicated to the founder of modern Turkey, and the ancient Ankara Castle, dating back to the 8th century BC. We'll include entry to the Museum of Anatolian Civilisations, offering a fascinating glimpse into the many cultures that have shaped Turkey's rich history. After soaking in the city's historical and cultural treasures, we journey towards Cappadocia, stopping en route at the striking Salt Lake for lunch while admiring its breathtaking landscapes. We will also visit Hacibektas, a significant pilgrimage site. Please be respectful of the dress code and maintain silence during our visit, as this sanctuary houses the mausoleum of Hacibektas, a notable 13th-century Sufi mystic. Our day concludes in Nevsehir, where we will arrive in time for an included dinner.
Day 5 - Cappadocia
On day five, we dedicate ourselves to uncovering the wonders of Cappadocia, renowned for its otherworldly landscapes, ancient churches, and underground settlements. Our adventure kicks off in the Greme Valley, where we will explore the open-air museum, home to remarkable rock-hewn churches, with admission included. We then make our way to Uchisar, famed for its natural fortress, before descending into the depths of Kaymakli, an underground city once capable of accommodating up to 30,000 inhabitants. As we journey back to Avanos, we'll pause at Pasabag, known as the Fairy Chimneys, for a stroll amidst these awe-inspiring natural rock formations. The day concludes with some free time for you to relax and soak in the unique atmosphere before we gather for dinner, which is provided.
Day 6 - Cappadocia - Ihlara - Konya
On our sixth day, we will venture to the outskirts of Cappadocia to explore the enchanting Ihlara Valley, renowned for its refreshing streams and the remarkable rock-cut churches and villages. Continuing our journey, we will visit a 13th-century caravanserai before arriving in Konya, where we will discover the Mevlana Mausoleum, dedicated to the revered poet and philosopher Rumi. Here, we will gain insight into the fascinating Dervish order. Dinner will be included. Later, you may choose to attend a dervish dance performance at the cultural centre for a unique cultural experience.
Day 7 - Konya - Egridir - Pamukkale
Today, well embark on a scenic drive through the picturesque landscapes between the lakes as we make our way to E?irdir. This charming lakeside town is notable for its historic walls and beautiful mosques, offering an ideal spot to enjoy a leisurely lunch. Afterward, our journey continues to Hierapolis-Pamukkale, renowned for its breathtaking terraces formed by mineral-rich waters, famously referred to as the Cotton Palace. We'll provide dinner upon arrival, giving us the opportunity to unwind and reflect on the day's experiences.
Day 8 - Pamukkale - Ephesus - Kusadasi
Today, we set off to explore Ephesus, a remarkably well-preserved ancient city in Asia Minor, which once supported a population of 250,000 people two millennia ago. Our itinerary includes visits to the House of the Virgin Mary, the Basilica of St John, and the iconic ruins of Ephesus, with entry fees covered. We continue our journey to Kusadasi, a vibrant seaside town celebrated for its energetic ambiance, bustling shopping streets, and its small but notable castle. Dinner will be provided to round off your evening. Please note, if you are travelling during the high season, from May to October, accommodation will be in Aydin instead of Kusadasi. In that instance, after visiting Ephesus, we will stop in Kusadasi from 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., where you'll enjoy a brief tour of the city before continuing to Aydin for the night.
Day 9 - Kusadasi - Bodrum - Marmaris
Today, we set out early to experience one of Turkeys natural gems, Lake Bafa, where you can take in the tranquil beauty of its surroundings. Our journey then takes us to Bodrum, renowned for its stunning fortified city with Greek origins. Here, you have the opportunity to explore its impressive castle, meander through the lively streets filled with visitors, or take a stroll by the marina. After enjoying lunch, well continue to Marmaris, a picturesque coastal destination celebrated for its castle, vibrant pier, and charming fountains. Dinner will be included. Please be aware that during the summer months, our accommodation may be in the nearby town of Mugla instead of Marmaris.
Day 10 - Marmaris - Rhodes
On Day 10, we depart early for Greece, embarking on the express ferry to Rhodes a journey that takes approximately one hour. Upon arrival, we proceed with standard border-crossing formalities before setting off to explore the remarkable walled city of Rhodes and its historic quarter. This area offers an intriguing tapestry of cultural influences, ranging from Greek and Roman to Byzantine, Knights of St. John, Ottoman, and Italian. In the afternoon, you will have the opportunity to wander at your leisure, absorbing the unique atmosphere of this enchanting island.Please be aware that the ferry schedule between Rhodes and Marmaris is subject to frequent changes and does not operate daily, except in the summer. As such, adjustments to this portion of the itinerary may be necessary.
Day 11 - Rhodes - Heraklion
Today, we explore Rhodes beyond its city limits. We begin our excursion by heading to Filerimos, perched on a hilltop, where the monastery and its picturesque surroundings invite a moment of peace. From there, we journey to Lindos, known for its dramatic clifftop Acropolis that overlooks the azure sea. While in Lindos, you can choose to wander the quaint, whitewashed streets, unwind on a sun-kissed beach, or opt for an iconic donkey ride up to the Acropolis. After enjoying lunch, we make our way back to Rhodes city, offering you some leisure time in the afternoon. As evening descends, we will arrange your transfer to the airport for a flight to Crete. Upon arrival, we will take you to your hotel in Heraklion. Please note that flight options directly from Rhodes to Crete are limited and subject to schedule changes, occasionally requiring an overnight or a morning departure via Athens.
Day 12 - Heraklion
Today, we venture along the scenic Cretan coast towards the western side of the island. Our first stop is Rethymno, a charming coastal city with a Venetian heritage, known for its medieval castle. Here, you can wander through its narrow streets, soaking in the architectural beauty. We then continue to Chania, a city that has been a focal point of contention for Romans, Byzantines, Venetians, Genoese, Turks, Egyptians, and Greeks over the centuries. This vibrant city is home to an impressive fortress and striking mansions that speak to its rich, multifaceted history. After a day of exploration, we return to Heraklion in the evening, with time to reminisce about the day's discoveries.
Day 13 - Heraklion
On our thirteenth day, we venture to the Palace of Knossos to explore the ancient Minoan civilisation that formed the bedrock of Greek culture some four thousand years ago. This excursion includes both admission and a guided tour to enrich our understanding of this fascinating archaeological site. Following our exploration, we traverse Crete's majestic mountains, heading south to the picturesque town of Agia Galini, beautifully set along the Libyan Sea. Here, you will have the opportunity to dine at a local spot and perhaps enjoy a refreshing swim. As the day draws to a close, we return to the capital, Heraklion. Please note, from November to April, due to seasonal closures, our visit will instead take us to Matala, renowned for its striking beaches and unique cliffside caves.
Day 14 - Heraklion
We'll journey along the eastern coast of Crete, starting with a visit to the quaint town of Kritsa. Here, you can explore the 13th-century church of Panagia Kera, admired for its exceptional frescoesadmission is included in the tour. Following this, we'll head to Agios Nikolaos, a charming town boasting a natural harbour, where you'll have time to wander and enjoy lunch at one of the local eateries. Our next stop will be Elounda, a beautiful former city-state, now a vibrant tourist destination. In Elounda, well board a boat bound for Spinalonga Island. On this island, well explore the historic Fortress of Spinalongaa Venetian fortification later used as a leper colony. After our visit, well return by boat and make our way back to Heraklion, where your accommodation awaits.
Day 15 - Heraklion - Santorini - Athens
On the morning of Day 15, we will make our way to the port to catch a high-speed ferry to Santorini, aiming to arrive between 9:00 and 10:00 a.m. Once on the island, we will travel by bus to Oia, a striking town renowned for its whitewashed streets, stunning views from the cliffs, and iconic windmills. You'll have some time to enjoy a meal and wander around at a relaxed pace. Later, we'll visit Fira, Santorinis capital. For those interested, there's an opportunity to descend to the port by cable car or donkey, offering a unique view of the cruise ships docked below. In the afternoon, we will return to the port to catch another high-speed ferry, scheduled to leave around 3:15 p.m. Our journey will conclude in Athens, arriving around midnight. Please note that from November to mid-April, the high-speed ferry service from Heraklion to Santorini is not available. During these months, we will instead travel from Heraklion to Athens by plane.
Day 16 - Athens - Kamena Vourla - Kalambaka
We begin our journey early in the morning, heading towards northern Greece. Our first stop is Kamena Vourla, a delightful coastal resort town set against a backdrop of breathtaking landscapes. After soaking in the scenic surroundings, we continue on our way, making a brief visit to the historic Thermopylae Mountain Pass, famously known for the legendary battle that took place there. Next, we travel to Kastraki, a charming village offering stunning vistas of the entire valley. Here, you'll have some free time to enjoy lunch and explore the quaint streets at your own pace. Our journey then takes us to the awe-inspiring Meteora a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its spectacular rock formations and monasteries perched atop towering cliffs. Your visit includes entry to one of these famous monasteries, giving you an insight into this remarkable spiritual haven. As the day winds down, we head to Kalambaka, where a delicious dinner awaits.
Day 17 - Kalambaka - Delphi - Athens
As we continue our journey from Kalambaka, we set off southward through the lush Thessaly region, renowned for its picturesque landscapes. Our first highlight of the day is Delphi, an ancient sanctuary with breathtaking views over the Gulf of Corinth. Here, you'll have time to wander through its fascinating archaeological site and take in the awe-inspiring surroundings. We'll pause for lunch before proceeding to the Hosios Loukas Monastery, a masterpiece of Byzantine architecture and a recognised World Heritage Site. This monastery is celebrated for its stunning 11th-century mosaics that are sure to leave a lasting impression. After our enriching visit, well travel onwards to Athens, reaching the city in the evening where a world of history and culture awaits.
Day 18 - Athens
On day 18, we will embark on an enlightening exploration of Athens, accompanied by a knowledgeable local guide. Our tour will take us to several iconic sites, including the Presidential Mansion and the Panathenaic Stadium, famously known as the venue for the first modern Olympic Games. We will also visit the National Library and wander through the bustling city centre squares, revelling in the vibrant atmosphere. Along the way, well witness the city's newer areas that blossomed in the wake of the 2004 Olympic Games. Our tour will culminate at the historic Acropolisplease note that admission is not included, so you might want to plan accordingly. As the day winds down, well head to the historic Plaka district, where you can enjoy a delightful evening in its quaint Greek tavernas, immersing yourself in the rich folklore and traditions of this storied city.
Day 19 - Athens
