Frequently asked questions
Who typically joins a tour?
Group travel appeals to a wide range of people, from those in their mid-20s to travelers in their 70s. Participants may be solo adventurers, couples, friends or families looking to explore together. Most travelers share a common interest in discovering new cultures, seeking adventure and enjoying the social side of travelling with a group.
What styles of escorted group trips are available?
We have four tour ranges to help you identify what you can expect of our trips. Exciting days and comfortable nights are the hallmark of our Signature tours while big adventures crossing entire continents are what characterize our Overlanding Range. For more information visit our Trip Types and Holiday Ranges page.
Will I get much free time on my trip?
When travelling with us you'll spend the days out sightseeing and enjoying lots of authentic cultural experiences. We work our itineraries so that there's always at least an hour or two each day for travelers to unwind. In some destinations we also include a day or two at leisure for you to enjoy the place as you wish. It'll always be somewhere with lots on offer, whether that's a beach location providing sun, sea and sand, or a scenic spot where outdoor activities abound.
How many people will be on a group trip?
It depends on the tour but generally speaking our group sizes average 16-18 passengers. Our Signature tours have a maximum of 24. The time of year affects traveler numbers so if you prefer a smaller group size then consider low season travel. Our special festival departures run with larger group numbers due to the one-off nature of the events though often we'll run two separate groups to ensure numbers are manageable.
Are there age restrictions on group trips?
Most standard group trips featured on the On The Go Tours website have a minimum age of 18, or 15 when travelling with an accompanying adult. Some itineraries will also have a maximum age as these tours tend to be more physically demanding. Travellers aged 65 and over are asked to complete a Tour Suitability Form so the chosen itinerary can be assessed for suitability. More information on the age restrictions can be found on the Tour Itineraries.
Can I extend my trip or arrive earlier?
Yes, it’s easy to add extra time to the beginning or end of your journey. Pre- and post-trip accommodation is available for all featured group trips, giving you the option to enjoy more time in the start or end destination. A selection of short stays can also be combined with many group itineraries, allowing you to further personalise your holiday. Prices and full details are listed on each trip page.
Do you cater for dietary requirements?
You'll find a variety of meals included on our tours - it could be daily breakfast or dinners at local restaurants. We will always do our best to accommodate the needs of our travelers but in more remote and out-of-the-way places this is not always possible. We ask that anyone with a dietary requirement or food allergy inform our team at time of booking. Handy tip - when you arrive in destination, ask your tour guide to write down your dietary requirements in the local language so that you can make yourself clearly understood when eating out away from the group.
How much baggage can I take?
Travelling light is always recommended, as it makes moving between destinations much easier. Many international airlines allow checked bags of up to 23kg, but some domestic flights included in group travel itineraries may have lower limits, sometimes around 15kg.
A compact suitcase weighing between 15–20kg is suitable for the majority of trips featured on the On The Go Tours website. For overland camping safaris in Africa, a soft backpack is usually more practical than a hard-sided suitcase.
Affordability and Security
When travelling with a group, common costs like transportation and guiding are shared across all travelers, which makes Group Tour prices very reasonable and cheaper than private touring or tailor made options. So when exploring far-away places, you'll have peace of mind and a feeling of security when travelling with a group that's accompanied by a local tour leader too.
Accommodation on Group Tours
From 3-5 star hotels to heritage properties
Accommodation on group trips generally includes a mix of 3–5 star hotels and heritage-style properties that reflect the local setting. Standards can vary from country to country, as partners select what they believe offers the best overall value and experience in each destination. Where high-quality 4 and 5 star hotels are well-priced, these are often used; where this isn’t practical, comfortable and good-value options of a lower rating, typically 3 stars and occasionally 2 stars, may be chosen instead.
Locations are selected for convenience wherever possible, with properties that usually offer en-suite rooms and facilities such as a restaurant, bar or sometimes a pool. In more remote regions, choices are naturally more limited, but this often becomes a highlight of the experience, with stays in desert camps, homestays, locally run guesthouses or traditional houseboats offering an authentic glimpse into local life.
