Day 1 - Madrid - Merida - Evora - Lisbon
Your journey begins as we depart from Madrid, heading towards the historic city of Mrida, the capital of Extremadura. Here, we'll explore the remarkable archaeological site featuring the Roman Theatre and Amphitheatre these well-preserved ancient structures are a recognised World Heritage Site. You'll have time to enjoy lunch in Mrida's lively pedestrianised historic centre, filled with various dining options. Afterwards, we cross the border into Portugal, where we visit vora, another distinguished World Heritage Site. This city is famous for its charming whitewashed streets, grand Renaissance palaces, and impressive cathedral. In the evening, we will arrive in Lisbon. It's worth mentioning that travellers may join or leave the tour at different points, but rest assured that our group size will remain within the set limits throughout the journey. Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2 - Lisbon
On the second day of our journey, we will embark on a tour of Lisbon, the majestic Portuguese capital set amid its famous seven hills. You'll be captivated by the city's narrow alleyways and iconic ceramic tiles, all bathed in a distinctive Atlantic light that imbues the city with a unique aura of "saudade" a sentiment of longing and nostalgia deeply ingrained in Portuguese culture. We will explore the historic Belem neighbourhood, the departure point for the great Portuguese navigators of the 15th century who ventured across vast oceans. In the afternoon, you'll have some free time to discover the city's vibrant Bairro Alto district, famed for its panoramic viewpoints. If you wish, there is an option to visit the delightful towns of Sintra, Cascais, and Estoril nearby. Our evening will culminate with a return to our hotel from the lively Restauradores Square, a popular hub teeming with bustling bars and cafes.
Day 3 - Lisbon - Lagos - Cape St. Vincent - Albufeira
We will set off early towards southern Portugal, taking in the picturesque views as we cross the expansive bridge over the Tagus River. Upon reaching the Algarve, in Portugals south, well delve into the history of Lagos. This city is celebrated for its historic port, from where Portuguese explorers once set sail to Brazil, and its quaint historic centre, surrounded by ancient city walls. Well have time to pause for lunch amidst this captivating setting.In the afternoon, we plan to visit the dramatic cliffs of the westernmost point of mainland Europe, Cape St. Vincent. Here, you can capture the striking views of the Sagres fortress with your camera. Later in the day, well enjoy some leisure time in Albufeira, a beautiful coastal city renowned for its stunning beaches and energetic historic centre. Accommodation will be arranged in Albufeira or a neighbouring spot within the Algarve, providing a restful night before we continue our journey.
Day 4 - Albufeira - Mrtola - Evora
Today we begin our adventure from Albufeira towards Faro, the tranquil capital of the Algarve. Spend some time taking a relaxed walk around the city. Our journey continues into the Alentejo region, where we visit Mrtola, a fascinating town-museum situated on the banks of the Guadiana River. This fortified town, once a key centre during the Muslim era, is characterised by its imposing castle that oversees streets filled with whitewashed houses and historical charm. Our next destination is vora, famed for the Chapel of Bones, an extraordinary chapel built with over 5,000 skeletonsadmission is included for this unique site. Following our visit, take some free time to explore vora at your leisure.
Day 5 - Evora - Marvo - Castelo de Vide - Tomar - Fatima
Today, we journey through the stunning landscapes of the Alentejo region. Our first stop is the charming walled town of Marvo, renowned for its breathtaking panoramic views. We then travel to Castelo de Vide, where we'll explore its impressive castle and wander through the historic Jewish quarter, home to a medieval synagogue now serving as a museum. You'll have time to roam the town's winding streets before we move on to Tomar. Here, you'll discover the Convent of Christ, once a castle-convent belonging to the Order of the Templars. Admission is included. Before reaching Ftima, we'll pause in Aljustrel, the birthplace of the three shepherd children who witnessed the Virgin Mary's apparitions. There, we'll visit Lucia's house. Once in Ftima, enjoy free time at the Sanctuary and, if visiting outside of winter, experience the moving candlelight procession. Dinner is included this evening.
Day 6 - Fatima - Porto
On this day, we journey north to reach Porto, Portugal's vibrant second-largest city, arriving around 11:00 in the morning. You'll then be treated to a delightful 50-minute cruise along the Douro River in a traditional Portuguese "Rabelo" boat, which will provide stunning views of the city's scenic riverside. Following this, there's some free time for you to immerse yourself in the bustling Ribeira district. This area is famed for its narrow streets, historical merchant houses, and quaint cafs. After exploring the delights of the Ribeira district at your leisure, we'll make our way to the hotel, where you'll be able to settle in and unwind.
Day 7 - Porto
After breakfast, your journey concludes in Porto, bringing your adventure to a close and leaving you with lasting memories of your travels.
