Day 1 - Madrid - Merida - Evora
Upon embarking from Madrid, our adventure begins with a scenic drive to Mrida, a city rich in history as the capital of Extremadura. We will include a visit to the Archaeological Ensemble of Mrida, revered both for its well-preserved Roman Theatre and Amphitheatre and its status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Lunch will be taken in Mridas charming pedestrianised historic centre, vibrant with life and a selection of inviting eateries.Our journey continues across the border into Portugal, where we conclude the day in vora, another gem recognised as a World Heritage Site. The city is famous for its striking whitewashed streets, Renaissance palaces, and imposing cathedral. You'll have the evening free to explore vora at your leisure, and we suggest a visit to the intriguing Chapel of Bones, constructed with the remains of 5,000 skeletons for a unique and memorable experience. Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2 - Evora - Marvo - Castelo de Vide - Tomar - Fatima
Today, we journey through the picturesque landscapes of Alentejo. Our first stop is Marvo, a charming walled town offering spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding region. We then continue to Castelo de Vide, where we'll explore its impressive castle and stroll through the old Jewish quarter. Here, you can visit the medieval synagogue, now a museum, or wander through the town's winding streets at your leisure.After lunch, we make our way to Tomar, a city known for the magnificent Convent of Christ, a former castle-convent of the Templars, with admission included. Before reaching Ftima, we pause in Aljustrel, the village where the three young shepherds who witnessed the apparitions of the Virgin Mary were born. Here, we'll visit Lucia's house.Upon arrival in Ftima, you'll have free time to explore the sanctuary. If you wish, you can attend the candlelight procession, although it's not available during the winter months. We end the day with an included dinner.
Day 3 - Fatima - Porto
As we head north into Portugal, we'll reach Porto, the country's vibrant second city, by around 11 a.m. Once there, we will embark on a delightful 50-minute cruise along the Douro River on a traditional "Rabelo" boat, offering a distinctive view of the city's picturesque waterfront. Following this unique experience, you'll have some free time to delve into the lively Ribeira district. This charming area is famed for its narrow, bustling streets lined with historical merchant houses and delightful cafs. Afterwards, we'll make our way to the hotel for your overnight stay.
Day 4 - Porto - Braga - Guimares - Bom Jesus - Pinho - Coimbra
Today, we explore the enchanting landscapes of northern Portugal. Our day begins with a leisurely walk through Braga, often referred to as the country's religious capital, where we'll visit its ancient cathedral. We then ascend to the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus via the worlds oldest cable caroffering us spectacular viewsand you can choose to return by the marvellous staircase for a unique experience. Our next destination is Guimares, known as Portugal's first capital. Here, you'll see the impressive Palace of the Dukes. After a delightful lunch surrounded by lush vineyards, we'll descend into the majestic Douro Valley. Along the way, we pass through Sabrosa, the birthplace of the famous explorer Magellan. In Pinho, we'll stop at the beautifully adorned train station, rich with traditional tiles, and then embark on a one-hour cruise along the Douro River, experiencing the scenic surroundings. If travelling between November and March, the river cruise will be substituted with a picturesque drive featuring stops at various viewpoints along the Douro River. We conclude our day by journeying to Coimbra, arriving in the evening, where a delectable dinner awaits.
Day 5 - Coimbra - Batalha - Nazare - Obidos - Lisbon
We begin our day in Coimbra, Portugal's third-largest city, renowned for its historic university and charming, steep streets that wind through the old town. As we move south, our first stop is the Batalha Monastery, a grand medieval mausoleum where entrance fees are covered. A testament to Portugal's rich history, this UNESCO World Heritage Site offers striking architectural beauty. For lunch, we head to Nazar, a bustling fishing village and popular seaside resort. Here, you can savour local cuisine and take a scenic ride up the elevator (tickets included) to the old city, where you'll be rewarded with panoramic ocean views. Our journey then leads us to bidos, a quintessential Portuguese town with enchanting whitewashed streets adorned with vibrant flowers. Finally, we make our way to Lisbon, arriving around 7:30 p.m., where the charms of the capital city await.
Day 6 - Lisbon
This morning, we set off on a guided tour of Lisbon, the enchanting capital set over seven hills. As we explore, you'll see the city's quaint alleys and the iconic Portuguese tiles that lend the streets their distinctive charm. Feel the wistful "saudade" in the air as the sunlight casts a magical glow over the Atlantic. Our tour takes us to the historic Belm district, the departure point for the legendary Portuguese explorers who ventured across the seas during the 15th century.In the afternoon, take advantage of some free time to wander through the Bairro Alto and soak in the views from its scenic viewpoint. If you're feeling adventurous, you might opt for a visit to the picturesque towns of Sintra, Cascais, and Estoril, each offering its own unique allure. Later, we return to the hotel from the bustling Restauradores Square, a vibrant area brimming with lively bars and cafsa perfect spot to unwind in the evening.
Day 7 - Lisbon - Caceres - Madrid
On our final day, well set off from Portugal, venturing through the picturesque Alentejo region. Our first stop is Estremoz, where we'll pause for coffee, surrounded by the towns quaint medieval charman experience of genuine Portuguese culture with its cobblestone streets and stunning architecture. As we continue, we cross into Spain, arriving in Cceres. Here, youll have the opportunity for lunch and to explore the towns beautifully preserved historic centre, one of the finest examples of medieval and Renaissance architecture worldwide. Our journey concludes as we proceed to Madrid, where well arrive in the evening.
Day 8 - Madrid
After breakfast, our tour concludes, leaving you with delightful memories of your journey.
