Day 1 - Madrid - Merida - Evora
Our journey begins in the vibrant city of Madrid as we set off towards Mrida, the capital of the historical region of Extremadura. Here, we'll explore the Archaeological Ensemble of Mrida, where you're treated to remarkable views of a well-preserved Roman theatre and amphitheatresites of significant cultural and historical value, having earned a World Heritage Site designation. After a leisurely lunch in the city's bustling pedestrian-friendly historic centre, filled with a variety of inviting eateries, we continue our adventure by crossing into Portugal. Our destination is vora, another UNESCO World Heritage Site. This charming city entices with its whitewashed streets, elegant Renaissance palaces, and an imposing cathedral. You'll have free time to wander and perhaps uncover hidden gems like the intriguing Chapel of Bones, constructed with 5,000 skeletonsa sight bound to leave a lasting impression. Please note, throughout this tour, travellers may join or leave at various points along the route, though rest assured the maximum group size will always be maintained. Day 2 - Evora - Marvo - Castelo de Vide - Tomar - Fatima
Our journey today unfolds across the captivating scenery of the Alentejo region. We will make a stop at Marvo, an enchanting walled town offering superb panoramic views of the surrounding terrain. Following this, we explore Castelo de Vide, home to an impressive castle and a charming old Jewish quarter. Here, you will have the chance to wander its winding streets and visit a medieval synagogue, now serving as a museum.After enjoying lunch, our tour continues to Tomar, a city famed for the Convent of Christa remarkable castle-convent once held by the Order of the Templars. Entry is included, allowing us to delve into its fascinating history. Before reaching our destination, we will pause in Aljustrel, the birthplace of the three young shepherds who witnessed the apparitions of the Virgin Mary. Here, we will have the opportunity to visit the childhood home of Lucia, one of the shepherds.Upon our arrival in Ftima, you will have some free time to visit the Sanctuary of Ftima. Should you wish, you could participate in the candlelight procession, though this is not held during the winter months. To conclude the day, a dinner has been arranged for us.
Day 3 - Fatima - Porto
We'll head north to explore Portugal's vibrant second city, Porto, arriving at around 11:00 a.m. Once there, we'll embark on a 50-minute river cruise aboard a traditional Portuguese "Rabelo" boat, providing us with a distinct view of Porto's picturesque riverside. Following this, you'll have some free time to wander through the bustling Ribeira district, with its narrow, winding streets lined with historic merchant houses and inviting cafs. The day concludes with a transfer to your hotel, where you can relax and reflect on your day's discoveries.
Day 4 - Porto - Braga - Guimares - Bom Jesus - Pinho - Coimbra
On day four, we immerse ourselves in the breathtaking landscapes of northern Portugal. Our journey begins in Braga, often referred to as the religious heart of the nation, where we take a leisurely walk to explore its historic cathedral. We then ascend to the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus via the world's oldest cable car, which offers splendid views. For those feeling energetic, we suggest descending the grand staircase, celebrated for its architectural beauty.Next, we journey to Guimares, acknowledged as Portugal's first capital, where we'll visit the splendid Palace of the Dukes. After enjoying a delightful lunch set amidst picturesque vineyards, we descend into the Douro Valley, passing through Sabrosa, the birthplace of the famed explorer Magellan. Our exploration continues in Pinho, where we'll visit the quaint train station, noted for its charming traditional tiles. Here, we'll embark on a serene one-hour cruise along the Douro River, allowing us to take in the enchanting sceneryplease note that from November to March, the cruise is replaced by a scenic drive with opportunities to stop at various viewpoints.As the day draws to a close, we arrive in Coimbra. Dinner is included this evening, topping off a day filled with exploration and cultural discovery.
Day 5 - Coimbra - Batalha - Nazare - Obidos - Lisbon
We'll begin our day exploring Coimbra, Portugal's third-largest city, renowned for its historic university and charming, steep, winding streets. As we journey south, we'll visit the Batalha Monastery, an extraordinary medieval royal mausoleum that includes entrance. Afterward, we'll break for lunch and a leisurely stroll in Nazar, a picturesque town known for its fishing heritage and status as a popular coastal resort. You can take the elevator up to the old town (tickets provided), which offers breathtaking ocean views. Continuing our journey, we'll make a stop in bidos, a quintessentially beautiful Portuguese town with whitewashed streets adorned with vibrant flowers. We expect to reach Lisbon around 7:30 p.m.
Day 6 - Lisbon
On the morning of our sixth day, well delve into the enchanting city of Lisbon. Known as the City of Seven Hills, Lisbon is famed for its quaint alleys and distinctive tiles. Our tour will also introduce you to the evocative feeling of "saudade" and the stunning light that bathes the city from the Atlantic. Well start with a visit to the historic Belem district, the launching point for Portugal's great navigators during the Age of Discovery in the 15th century. The afternoon is yours to explore at leisure wander through the Bairro Alto and enjoy the view from its viewpoint, or consider an optional excursion to the picturesque towns of Sintra, Cascais, and Estoril. As evening descends, well regroup and head back to our hotel from Restauradores Square, a vibrant area brimming with lively bars and charming cafes.
Day 7 - Lisbon
Following breakfast, our journey concludes, leaving you with fond memories and the enriching experiences of our adventure together.
