Day 1 - Medina
Welcome to Medina, a city revered as one of the two holiest places in Islam, recently opened to non-Muslims. On arrival, we'll transfer to your hotel in this historical destination, where respect for local customs, including appropriate attire, is essential. After settling in and enjoying lunch, we embark on a guided exploration around the magnificent Prophet's Mosque, known as Al Masjid an Nabawi. This luminous site, with its ten minarets, has space for one million visitors and was constructed by the Prophet Muhammad, who is also buried here.We'll then visit Mount Uhud, a significant pilgrimage site and the battleground where the Prophet's forces faced those from Mecca. You are welcome to walk its vast expanse and climb the mountainplease maintain silence and respect the pilgrims around. We continue to the Quba Mosque, where in 622, the Prophet laid its first stone; the current structure is a more recent build. Nearby, we will explore the garden and well of Ethiq, historically a welcoming point for the Prophet upon his arrival in Medina.Later, you'll have free time in the city centre to browse the shopping areas or perhaps visit the Hejaz Railway Museum, located in the old Ottoman train station. In the afternoon, we'll explore the Al Madinah Museum to delve into the city's rich history. As dusk falls, well return to Al Masjid mosque to observe the profound moment of prayer time, amidst its beautiful illuminations. Dinner is included in the evening to end your first day in Medina. Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2 - Medina - Al-Ula
Following a hearty breakfast, we embark on a journey through some of the most breathtaking desert landscapes imaginable. Our first stop is Khaybar, a place steeped in history. This region, once a Jewish settlement in the 7th century, is famed for the Battle of Khaybar in 628 AD, where Muslim forces led by the Prophet Muhammad triumphed over the local Jewish tribes. We'll delve into history as we explore the ancient fortress and stroll through the verdant oasis, with admission included in your tour.Encircled by dramatic desert vistas, we then make our way to Al-Ula, a remarkable open-air museum of natural wonders. This region captivates with its striking rock formations, canyons, and ravines, carving a spectacular backdrop that echoes the artistry of its past inhabitants. Upon arrival, we'll visit the iconic Elephant Rock (Jabal Al Fil), a 52-meter-high geological marvel shaped remarkably like an elephant. Dinner will be provided, rounding off a day immersed in some of the world's most awe-inspiring scenery.
Day 3 - Al-Ula - Tabuk
In Al-Ula, we will explore the remarkable site of Hegra, also known as Madain Saleh, a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognised for its fascinating Nabataean architecture. Often referred to as "the Other Petra," Hegra captivates visitors with its rock-carved tombs set against a mysterious desert backdrop. After exploring these ancient wonders, a leisurely lunch is provided. You will then have some free time to wander through Al-Ulas commercial streets and enjoy its beautiful oasis. Later, we will depart for Tabuk, where dinner will be included.
Day 4 - Tabuk - Petra
Today we cross into a country that has only recently opened up to tourism. Our journey begins just 120 km from the Saudi Arabian border at Halat Ammar, where stunning desert landscapes await. After completing border procedures, we continue to Tabuk, a lively provincial capital known for exporting flowers to Europe. Along the way, we pause at a local farm to explore various plant and flower crops.Tabuk, a city with over half a million residents, is one of the oldest in the region. Our visit begins at the historic train station, now a museum, showcasing the steam engines that once linked Damascus with Medina. Next, we explore the historic castle, dating back 3,500 years before Christ. Inside, a museum recounts the city's rich history, including tales of great explorers like Ibn Battuta and the pilgrims who paused here on their journey to Mecca or Medina.Following our visit to the castle, we head to the Mud House Museum. This intriguing site offers a glimpse into traditional life with a recreated interior of an adobe house. Our day concludes with a stroll through the bustling commercial district in the city centre.
Day 5 - Petra - Wadi Rum
On the fifth day, prepare yourself for an extraordinary experience as we visit Petra, a remarkable archaeological site accessed through a narrow canyon. Explore the city's temples and tombs carved into the cliffs, a testament to its founding over 2300 years ago. Lunch is included. Following this, we make our way to the magnificent desert of Wadi Rum. Upon arrival at the Visitor Centre, we will hop into 4x4 vehicles to explore some of the desert's most stunning landscapes, and you'll relish a 45-minute camel ride across the vast sands. We'll also traverse the Khazali Canyon, where you'll have the rare opportunity to view engravings that provide insight into the origins of the Arabic language. Dinner and accommodation are arranged in a desert camp, concluding an unforgettable day.
Day 6 - Wadi Rum - Aqaba - Eilat - Saint Catherine
Following breakfast, we journey to Aqaba, Jordan's picturesque port city along the Red Sea. Enjoy a leisurely stroll through the city centre before proceeding to the vibrant city of Eilat, Israel, known for its superb beaches. You'll have the opportunity to relax, indulge in lunch, or perhaps take a refreshing swim. We then continue our adventure, crossing the border into Egypt's captivating Sinai Peninsula. As we travel, there will be time to capture photographs of Pharaoh's Island, home to the formidable Salah ad-Din fortress, before arriving in Saint Catherine. Here, you'll unwind with dinner and overnight accommodation provided. Please be aware of border crossing fees between Jordan, Israel, and Egypt: Jordan requires a $15 exit fee, Israel imposes a $32 exit fee, and Egypt requires a $45 entry visa fee. Rates are approximate and subject to change. Note that drones and cameras with more than a 5.5-metre zoom are not permitted. In rare cases, due to unforeseen circumstances or a smaller group size, we may opt for a direct ferry crossing from Aqaba to Taba. This two-hour journey will not be accompanied by a guide.
Day 7 - Saint Catherine - The Well of Moses - Cairo
Today we embark on a journey to the historic and spiritual heart of Mount Sinai, starting with a visit to the walled Monastery of Saint Catherine. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a significant spiritual landmark for Jews, Christians, and Muslims alike and is associated with the biblical tale of Moses and the Burning Bush. The monastery, which belongs to the Orthodox Church, offers an intriguing look into religious history and tradition.As we continue our exploration, we traverse the scenic landscapes of the Sinai Desert, pausing for lunch en route. Our journey leads us to the Well of Moses, a small oasis steeped in biblical lore. From there, we journey through the Suez Canal via tunnel, leaving the desert behind and heading towards Cairo. We arrive in the bustling capital city by late afternoon, where we settle in for a comfortable evening's accommodation.
Day 8 - Cairo
Today, enjoy a full day of exploration in Cairo, starting with the iconic Pyramids of Cheops, Kefren, and Micerinos. While the interior access is not included, their grandeur is undeniable from the outside. Nearby, we'll admire the majestic Sphinx, carved directly from the rock. Our next stop is the Egyptian Museum, home to ancient artefacts and the famed treasures of Tutankhamun's tomb. After an included lunch, we'll visit the Citadel of Saladin and the impressive Alabaster Mosque. Our day continues with a stroll through the historic Coptic neighbourhood, where we will visit the Hanging Church, an architectural marvel built atop a Roman fortress.
Day 9 - Cairo - Wadi El Natrun - Alexandria
Our day begins as we leave the vibrant hustle of Cairo to journey towards the serene Wadi Natrun region, renowned for its historic Coptic monasteries. This area became a refuge for many Christians fleeing Roman persecution in the fourth century. The fortified monasteries, essential pilgrimage sites, reflect a rich tradition and have witnessed numerous historical skirmishes. Our exploration will allow us to uncover these traditions and learn more about the spiritual heritage of the Coptic community. Our first visit is to the Saint Macarius Monastery, established in 360 AD, where a monk will guide us around the site, sharing insights into its past and present significance. We continue to the monastery of Anba Bishoy, founded in 340 AD, where well enter the fortified tower via a drawbridge. Another monk will lead us through the church, refectory, and fortress, resting place of several Coptic Popes. You'll have some time to wander through the lively area and visit the expansive new cathedral.Our journey then takes us to Alexandria, a bustling port city with over five million residents. Following our arrival and included lunch, we'll explore the formidable Qaitbay Fortress. Built in 1480 upon the site where the ancient Lighthouse of Alexandriaone of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient Worldonce stood, the fortress offers a fascinating glimpse into the city's layered history. Afterwards, well travel the diverse cornice along the citys waterfront, ranging from chaotic and commercial to elegant and tranquil, depending on the area. There will be some free time for you to explore the city at your leisure before returning for accommodation.
Day 10 - Alexandria - Rosseta - Cairo
We continue our exploration of Alexandria, starting with the remarkable Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa. This vast Roman cemetery, known for its unique blend of Pharaonic and Greco-Roman styles, offers a fascinating insight into the ancient world. From the catacombs, we'll navigate through narrow, bustling commercial lanes with our guide, leading us to Pompey's Pillar. This towering column, standing at 30 metres, is a notable landmark amid the remnants of a historic temple.Our next stop is a brief photo opportunity at the new Library of Alexandria. Inaugurated in 2002, its modern architecture serves as a reminder of Alexandria's legacy as a centre of knowledge in the 3rd century BC, when it housed over half a million papyrus scrolls. After lunch, we proceed to Rosetta, a town near the Nile's mouth. It was here that the Rosetta Stone, instrumental in deciphering ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics, was discovered. We'll view a replica of the stone at the Rashid Fortress, located in a charming village where the Nile is lined with vibrant fishing boats.Continuing in Rosetta, we explore the town centre, admiring the traditional Ottoman architecture with its distinct brick and wood design. You'll also enjoy a boat trip on the Nile, offering an excellent vantage point to observe the local fishing activity. We then return to Cairo, arriving by evening. Do note, the Rashid Fortress is infrequently visited and may occasionally be closed; if so, we'll admire it from outside and explore the village instead.
Day 11 - Cairo
Following breakfast, we will provide a transfer to the airport, concluding our services for this remarkable journey.
