Day 1 - Lisbon
As you arrive in Lisbon, our team will ensure your transfer to the hotel, setting the stage for your exploration of this captivating city. Take some time to unwind and familiarise yourself with the surroundings. In the afternoon, head to the hotel reception, where you will find information regarding the start of your adventure. This initial day allows you to adjust and savour the first impressions of Portugal's vibrant capital. Enjoy your free time to get acquainted with the local culture and pace before your journey truly begins. Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2 - Lisbon
On the second day, we'll delve into the heart of Lisbon with a morning sightseeing tour. As we explore this vibrant capital, famously built on seven hills, you'll experience its winding alleys, distinctive tiles, and the unique air of "saudade," all illuminated by the stunning Atlantic light. A visit to the Belem neighbourhood is in store, an area steeped in history as the launching point for Portuguese explorers who once navigated the unforgiving seas of the 15th century.Your afternoon is free to explore at your leisure. You might choose to wander the bustling streets of the Bairro Alto district, renowned for its lively atmosphere and breathtaking viewpoints. For those seeking further adventures, an optional excursion can take you to the charming towns of Sintra, Cascais, and Estoril.Come evening, we'll regroup at Restauradores Square, a hub of activity lined with lively bars and bustling cafes. From here, well make our way back to the hotel, reflecting on the day's discoveries and experiences.
Day 3 - Lisbon - Lagos - Cape St. Vincent - Albufeira
Today, we set off early towards southern Portugal, crossing the long bridge over the Tagus River and taking in the scenic landscapes en route to the Algarve. Our first stop is Lagos, a city steeped in history, known for its pivotal role in maritime exploration as ships once embarked from its port to Brazil. Well have time to explore the charming historic centre, still encircled by ancient city walls, and enjoy a leisurely lunch. In the afternoon, we'll head to Cape St. Vincent, the westernmost point of mainland Europe. Here, you can marvel at the dramatic, windswept cliffs and capture photos of the nearby historic Sagres fortress. Later, well continue to the picturesque coastal city of Albufeira. You will have the opportunity to unwind on the beaches or stroll through its vibrant historic centre. Accommodation for the night will be provided in Albufeira or within the surrounding region of the Algarve.
Day 4 - Albufeira - Mrtola - Evora
On day four, we will head towards Faro, a tranquil town in the Algarve, where you can enjoy a leisurely stroll through its picturesque streets. Continuing our journey, we will explore the Alentejo region, stopping at Mrtola. This walled town, set on the banks of the Guadiana River, served as a vital centre during the Muslim era. Its prominent castle invites exploration amidst streets lined with whitewashed houses and numerous historical sites. Our journey then takes us to vora, where we will visit the Chapel of Bones your admission is included a remarkable chapel constructed with over 5,000 skeletons. Following this, we will delve into the rich history of this walled city, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and discover its medieval palaces, Gothic religious buildings, and an ancient Roman temple.
Day 5 - Evora - Marvo - Castelo de Vide - Tomar - Fatima
Today, we will journey through the stunning landscapes of the Alentejo region. Our first stop is the charming, fortified town of Marvo, renowned for its panoramic views over the surrounding countryside. Next, we will visit Castelo de Vide, famous for its impressive castle. Here, you'll have the opportunity to wander through the old Jewish quarter and perhaps visit the medieval synagogue, now converted into a museum, or simply enjoy exploring the winding streets. After lunch, we continue to Tomar, a city with a rich history and home to the Convent of Christ, an enchanting former fortress-convent of the Order of the Templars, which we will have the pleasure of visiting. As we approach Ftima, we will pause in the small village of Aljustrel, birthplace of the three shepherd children who encountered the apparitions of the Virgin Mary. We'll visit the house of Lucia, one of the children, before continuing to Ftima. Upon arrival, you will have free time to explore the Sanctuary of Ftima at your leisure, where you might wish to attend the moving candlelight procession (seasonally dependent). Dinner is included as we conclude today's rich tapestry of cultural and historical experiences.
Day 6 - Fatima - Porto
We set off towards northern Portugal, reaching the dynamic city of Porto by approximately 11:00 a.m. Upon arrival, we'll embark on a delightful 50-minute cruise along the Douro River aboard a traditional "Rabelo" boat, a vessel historically used for transporting port wine. This cruise offers a splendid vantage point of Portos picturesque riverside skyline. Following the cruise, youll have free time to explore the vibrant Ribeira district at your leisure. This lively area is famed for its narrow streets, lined with colourful merchant houses and inviting cafs. Later, well proceed to our hotel for the evening's rest.
Day 7 - Porto - Bom Jesus do Monte Sanctuary - Cambados - Santiago de Compostela
We begin our day by heading to Braga, where we'll ascend to the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus on the world's oldest water-operated cable car. At the summit, take in the stunning views before exploring the sanctuary. We suggest you descend via its iconic staircase, which provides a scenic and pleasant experience. Our journey then takes us into the Galician region, where we'll visit the historic town of Cambados in the Ras Baixas. Here, we'll embark on a glass-bottom boat trip along the Ra de Arousa. As we sail, we'll gain fascinating insights into local mussel and oyster cultivation, enhanced by a tasting session of wine and mussels onboard. By lunchtime, we arrive in Santiago de Compostela and join a local guide for a city tour. Explore its medieval streets and delve into the city's rich history as a prominent pilgrimage destination since the Middle Ages.
Day 8 - Santiago de Compostela - Lugo - O Cebreiro - Leon - Madrid
We will continue our adventure along the renowned Way of St. James, pausing first in Lugo. Here, you'll have the chance to explore its historic town centre, famed for the remarkably preserved Roman Walls, which are recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Our route then takes us to O Cebreiro, a picturesque Galician village known for its unique stone architecture. By lunchtime, we will arrive in Len, where we'll visit the breathtaking Gothic cathedral, celebrated for its magnificent stained-glass windows. Enjoy a leisurely stroll through Len's historic centre before we depart around 5:00 p.m. Our journey will conclude as we reach Madrid, with an expected arrival time of approximately 9:00 p.m. Please note that the final leg from Len to Madrid may involve either a train or regular transport, contingent on the group size.
Day 9 - Madrid
Following breakfast, our journey concludes, leaving you with lasting memories to cherish.
