Day 1 - Lisbon
Upon your arrival in Lisbon, you'll be warmly greeted and transferred to your hotel. Once settled, you'll have some leisure time to explore the vibrant surroundings at your own pace. In the afternoon, be sure to visit the hotel reception where you'll find important information about the start of your tour. Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2 - Lisbon
On the second day of your journey, we will begin with an exciting sightseeing tour of Lisbon, known as the city of seven hills. As we traverse its charming alleys, you'll experience the city's iconic tiles, and the unique atmosphere infused with "saudade" under the dazzling Atlantic sunlight. Our explorations include the historic Belm neighbourhood, a crucial starting point for the legendary Portuguese navigators of the 15th century. The afternoon is yours to enjoy at leisure. Perhaps you'll choose to wander through Bairro Alto and enjoy its spectacular views, or consider an optional excursion to the picturesque towns of Sintra, Cascais, and Estoril if you wish. Our evening concludes with a return to the hotel, departing from the lively Restauradores Squarea hub of vibrant bars and cafs.
Day 3 - Lisbon - Lagos - Cape St. Vincent - Albufeira
On Day 3, we'll set off early towards southern Portugal, crossing the expansive Tagus River via a long bridge and taking in the stunning views. Our first destination is the historic city of Lagos, located in the Algarve region. Known for its port, which once launched Portuguese ships to Brazil, Lagos boasts a captivating historic centre encircled by ancient walls. Here, you'll have time to enjoy lunch at your leisure. In the afternoon, our journey continues to Cape St. Vincent, the westernmost point of continental Europe, renowned for its dramatic, windswept cliffs. We'll pause nearby to capture the historic Sagres fortress in photographs. Later, we'll arrive in the picturesque coastal city of Albufeira, where you can choose to unwind on its sunlit beaches or explore the vibrant historic centre. We will stay overnight in Albufeira or a nearby location in the Algarve.
Day 4 - Albufeira - Mrtola - Evora
Today, we journey to Faro, a tranquil city in the Algarve region, where we can enjoy a leisurely walk through its charming streets. Following our visit, we will travel to the Alentejo region, known for its sweeping plains and rich history. Our first stop is Mrtola, a unique living museum set on the banks of the Guadiana River. This town, once an important centre during the Muslim era, invites exploration of its narrow streets, whitewashed houses, and historical corners, all watched over by a prominent castle.Next, we continue to vora, a city steeped in history and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here, we'll visit the Chapel of Bones a remarkable chapel built using over 5,000 human skeletons. As we stroll through vora's ancient streets, we encounter a tapestry of architectural heritage, including medieval palaces, Gothic churches, and an ancient Roman temple.
Day 5 - Evora - Marvo - Castelo de Vide - Tomar - Fatima
Today, we journey through the picturesque landscapes of the Alentejo region. Our first stop is Marvo, a charming fortified town offering breathtaking panoramic views. Here, well have time to delve into its rich history and admire the scenery. Next, we head to Castelo de Vide, known for its impressive castle and quaint Jewish quarter. You'll have the opportunity to explore the towns medieval synagogue, now a museum, or simply wander through its winding streets. After a leisurely lunch, we continue our adventure to Tomar. This city is home to the Convent of Christ, a remarkable castle-convent that once belonged to the Order of the Templars admission is included for this historic exploration. Before reaching Ftima, we make a brief stop in Aljustrel, where the three young shepherds who witnessed the apparitions of the Virgin Mary were born. Here, well visit Lucia's house to gain deeper insight into this significant historical event. Upon arrival in Ftima, you'll have free time at the Sanctuary of Ftima, where you can attend the candlelight procession if desired (note that this procession does not occur in winter). Well end the day with an included dinner, rounding off a day rich in history and culture.
Day 6 - Fatima - Porto
Today, we journey north to Porto, Portugal's vibrant second city, with an estimated arrival around 11 a.m. Upon reaching Porto, we'll delight in a 50-minute scenic cruise along the Douro River aboard a traditional Portuguese Rabelo boat. This will offer us a unique perspective of the citys stunning riverside area. Following our river adventure, youll have time to roam the lively Ribeira district, renowned for its historic merchant houses and quaint cafs, before we head to our hotel for the evening.
Day 7 - Porto - Bom Jesus do Monte Sanctuary - Cambados - Santiago de Compostela
Today we embark on a journey through captivating landscapes. In Braga, we'll experience a unique ride on the world's oldest water-operated cable car to reach the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus, a site renowned for its breathtaking views. After exploring the sanctuary, we suggest descending via its beautifully crafted staircase. Our travels then take us into Galicia, where we'll visit Cambados, a historic town in the Ras Baixas region. Here, we'll enjoy a glass-bottom boat tour along the Ra de Arousa, offering insights into local mussel and oyster farming practices, accompanied by a delightful sampling of wine and mussels. Around lunchtime, we arrive in Santiago de Compostela, where a local guide will lead us on a tour through the city's medieval streets and its famous pilgrimage sites, which date back to the Middle Ages.
Day 8 - Santiago de Compostela - Lugo - O Cebreiro - Leon - Oviedo
Today, we embark on a journey along the legendary Way of St. James, starting with a visit to Lugo. Here, you have time to explore the historic town centre, famed for its Roman walls, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that encircles the city with an impressive 2-kilometre stretch. We then proceed to O Cebreiro, a picturesque Galician stone village nestled amidst breathtaking landscapes.As we continue our journey, we head towards Len, where we will arrive around lunchtime. In Len, well marvel at the magnificent Gothic cathedral, celebrated for its remarkable stained-glass windows, and enjoy a leisurely stroll through the historic town centre. Our adventure doesnt end there, as we cross the majestic Cantabrian Range, making our way to Asturias, where we reach Oviedo by evening.Upon arrival, we offer you the chance to delve into the rich heritage of Oviedo with a guided tour of the city. This hour-and-a-half tour, which may take place today or tomorrow morning, includes visits to the 9th-century cathedral, the striking Calatrava Congress Palace, Campoamor Theatre, and the charming Calle de la Rua. To end the day on a high note, well gather for a traditional Asturian dinner at a cosy cider house, enjoying the regions delightful culinary offerings.
Day 9 - Oviedo - Covadonga - Santillana del Mar - Santander
Today, we set off on a journey to the spectacular Picos de Europa, making our first stop at the impressive Basilica of Covadonga. This stunning structure sits against a backdrop of towering peaks, offering a connection to Spains legendary past. From Covadonga, we continue our scenic drive along the coast until we reach the medieval town of Santillana del Mar. Known for its remarkably preserved historic quarter, Santillana is a delight to wander through. Included in our visit is a trip to the nearby Altamira Cave Museum, where you can explore facsimiles of the renowned prehistoric cave paintings. In the afternoon, we head to the elegant coastal city of Santander, revered for its beautiful blend of seascapes and mountainous views. Here, we'll take a panoramic tour with a local guide who will bring to life the citys history and highlight its stunning bay.
Day 10 - Santander - Bilbao - Foronda Service Area - La Rioja - Zaragoza
Today, we continue our adventure along the Cantabrian coast, where dramatic landscapes of mountains meet the sea. Our first destination is Bilbao, the largest city in the Basque Country. Here, we'll embark on a guided city tour to uncover the city's highlights, including the renowned Guggenheim area, the historic old quarter, and the impressive Cathedral. Following our tour, youll have free time to explore the city at your own pace and perhaps savour some traditional "pintxos," the Basque country's famous tapas-like small bites.In the afternoon, we journey to La Rioja, a region celebrated for its rich winemaking heritage. Day 11 - Zaragoza - Poblet - Barcelona
Today begins with a captivating panoramic tour of Zaragoza, led by a knowledgeable local guide. Our morning will include a visit to the Cathedral-Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar, an architectural gem. We will also explore some remarkable works by the renowned painter Goya. The tour continues through the Roman theatre and a Renaissance palace, followed by a leisurely walk to the Aljafera Palace, a stunning example of Moorish architecture.After enjoying lunch, we travel to Catalonia to marvel at the Poblet Abbey. Day 13 - Barcelona - Peniscola - Valencia - Madrid
Our journey takes us south along the sun-drenched Mediterranean coast. We will stop in Pescola, an enchanting town encircled by ancient walls and picturesque scenery, allowing time for a leisurely stroll through its historic streets. From here, we continue to Valencia, a dynamic port city on Spain's Levantine coast, arriving around lunchtime. This is the perfect opportunity for you to savour the renowned local dish, paella. Our afternoon continues around 4:30 p.m. as we make our way towards Madrid, pausing briefly to admire the iconic City of Arts and Sciences, a testament to Valencia's modern architectural flair. We expect to reach Madrid between 8:30 and 9:00 p.m. Upon arrival, we'll provide a transfer to the bustling Plaza Mayor, where you can unwind and enjoy pinchos or a glass of wine at one of the many lively restaurants. Depending on the group size, our journey from Valencia to Madrid may be aboard a high-speed train, ensuring a swift and comfortable transition.
Day 14 - Madrid
Today, we embark on a captivating exploration of Madrid, where we'll delve into the heart of Spain's vibrant capital. Our morning begins with a tour of central Madrid's most iconic sights we'll traverse the elegant Paseo del Prado and admire the grandeur of the Cibeles and Neptuno fountains. Continuing on, we'll pass through the stunning Puerta de Alcal, the bustling Plaza de Coln, and the historic Plaza Mayor.
