Day 1 - Lisbon
Welcome to your adventure in Lisbon! Upon arrival, we will provide a transfer to your hotel, where you can settle in and perhaps enjoy some free time to explore the local area at your leisure. In the afternoon, check the information boards at the hotel reception for important details about the start of your journey. Enjoy the anticipationthe city awaits! Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2 - Lisbon
This morning, we embark on a captivating sightseeing tour of Lisbon, the enchanting capital known as the city of seven hills. We'll meander through its iconic winding alleys and admire the famous Portuguese tiles, all the while soaking in the unique atmosphere conveyed by the city's distinct "saudade" and radiant Atlantic light. Our visit includes a stop in the historic Belem neighbourhood, from where legendary Portuguese explorers set sail to cross the oceans during the 15th century. In the afternoon, you will have free time to explore at your leisure. You might choose to stroll through Bairro Alto, renowned for its scenic viewpoint and vibrant streets. Alternatively, an optional trip to the picturesque towns of Sintra, Cascais, and Estoril is available, offering further exploration opportunities. In the evening, we gather at the bustling Restauradores Square, a lively area brimming with enticing bars and cosy cafs, before returning to our hotel for the night.
Day 3 - Lisbon - Lagos - Cape St. Vincent - Albufeira
On the third day, we set off early towards southern Portugal, crossing the sweeping bridge over the Tagus River and taking in the picturesque scenery along the way. Our journey leads us to the Algarve, where we delve into the historic city of Lagos. Known for its significant maritime heritage, Lagos was the launch point for many expeditions to Brazil. Its ancient walls enclose a charming historic centre, offering a glimpse into its storied past. After taking some time to enjoy lunch, we venture to Cape St. Vincent, the westernmost tip of mainland Europe. Here, the dramatic windswept cliffs provide a stunning backdrop for photos. Nearby, the historic Sagres fortress awaits our exploration. Later in the day, Albufeira invites us to unwind. You can choose to relax on its inviting beaches or explore its bustling historic centre. We will spend the night in Albufeira or a nearby town within the Algarve region.
Day 4 - Albufeira - Mrtola - Evora
Today, we make our way to Faro, a tranquil city in the Algarve. Enjoy a leisurely stroll through its serene streets before we continue our journey into the Alentejo region. Here, nestled on the banks of the Guadiana River, we find Mrtola. This town-museum, renowned for its significance during the Muslim era, features a large castle that overlooks streets lined with whitewashed houses and historical corners. Our travels then take us to vora, where you'll marvel at the Chapel of Bones, a unique site constructed from over 5,000 skeletons your visit is included. Well also explore this walled city, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, filled with medieval palaces, Gothic religious structures, and an ancient Roman temple.
Day 5 - Evora - Marvo - Castelo de Vide - Tomar - Fatima
Today, we journey through the captivating landscapes of Alentejo. Our first stop is the charming, fortified town of Marvo, renowned for its breathtaking panoramic views over the region. We then make our way to Castelo de Vide, where you'll have the opportunity to explore the impressive castle and stroll through the historic Jewish quarter. Here, you can visit the medieval synagogue, now a museum, or wander the quaint cobblestone streets.Post-lunch, we travel onwards to Tomar, known for the remarkable Convent of Christ. This former stronghold of the Knights Templar provides fascinating insights into history admission is included. Before reaching Ftima, we pause in Aljustrel, the birthplace of the three shepherd children who famously witnessed the apparitions of the Virgin Mary. You'll be able to see Lucia's house as part of this visit. In Ftima, you'll have free time at the Sanctuary of Ftima, with the option to participate in the candlelight procession, conditions permitting. Tonight, enjoy an included dinner.
Day 6 - Fatima - Porto
Today, we journey north to Porto, Portugal's second-largest city, and anticipate arriving around 11 a.m. Upon arrival, we'll take a delightful 50-minute cruise on the Douro River aboard a traditional "Rabelo" boat. This cruise provides a compelling view of the city's beautiful riverside scenery. Following our river adventure, you'll have free time to delve into the lively Ribeira district. Explore its narrow streets lined with historic merchant houses and quaint cafs, which offer a taste of Porto's vibrant atmosphere. Your visit concludes at the hotel, where you can unwind after an exhilarating day of exploration.
Day 7 - Porto - Braga - Guimares - Bom Jesus - Pinho - Coimbra
Today, we immerse ourselves in the captivating landscapes of northern Portugal. Our journey begins with a visit to Braga, often hailed as the spiritual heart of the country due to its historic cathedral. A highlight of the day is our ascent to the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus aboard the world's oldest cable car, an experience that offers breath-taking views of the surroundings. For those feeling adventurous, we suggest descending via the remarkable staircase. Our exploration continues to Guimares, a city steeped in history as Portugal's inaugural capital, where we'll admire the grand Palace of the Dukes. Lunch will be amid scenic vineyards, a perfect interlude before we descend into the verdant Douro Valley. We'll pass through Sabrosa, the birthplace of the famed explorer Magellan, before arriving in Pinho. Here, we will delight in the charming train station decorated with traditional tiles and embark on a one-hour cruise along the Douro River, presenting the region's stunning beauty. From November to March, when the river cruise is unavailable, you have the option of a scenic drive with stops at viewpoints overlooking the river. Well conclude our day by travelling to Coimbra, reaching our destination by evening. Dinner is included in our programme.
Day 8 - Coimbra - Batalha - Nazare - Obidos - Lisbon
On day eight, you'll immerse yourself in the vibrant city of Coimbra, the third largest in Portugal, celebrated for its historic university and captivating, steep streets. As we journey south, we'll pause at the Batalha Monastery, a grand medieval mausoleum for kings, with entrance included. In the afternoon, enjoy time for lunch in Nazar, a charming fishing town and popular seaside resort. You'll have the chance to take the elevator up to the old city, where you'll be rewarded with breathtaking ocean views. Continuing towards Lisbon, we'll stop in the enchanting town of bidos, renowned for its picturesque whitewashed streets brimming with flowers. We'll aim to arrive in Lisbon around 7:30 p.m.
Day 9 - Lisbon
After breakfast, our tour concludes, leaving you with cherished memories of your journey.
