Day 1 - Lisbon
Welcome to your adventure in Lisbon! Upon your arrival, we'll take care of your transfer to the hotel. Once settled in, you'll have some free time to explore or relax at your leisure. Later in the afternoon, you can check the hotel reception area for any important information about the commencement of your tour. This will give you a brief insight into our journey ahead and ensure you're fully prepared for the experiences to come. Enjoy your first day in this captivating city with its rich history, delightful cuisine, and welcoming charm. Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Day 2 - Lisbon
Our day in Lisbon begins with a captivating morning tour of the city, affectionately known as the City of the Seven Hills. Prepare to be enchanted by its winding alleyways and iconic azulejos, reflective of its rich history and culture. Lisbon's unique allure is heightened by the concept of "saudade," a deep emotional state that resonates throughout the city, combined with the vibrant Atlantic light. Next, we will explore the historic Belem district, famous as the departure point for the great Portuguese navigators during the Age of Discovery in the 15th century.The afternoon is yours to discover more of Lisbon's wonders. Why not wander over to Bairro Alto, a lively district offering delightful views from its scenic vantage point? Alternatively, you might choose to venture beyond Lisbon on an optional excursion. Explore the charming town of Sintra with its fairytale castles, relax in the coastal resort of Cascais, or enjoy the elegant charm of Estoril.We'll reconvene in the evening, making our way back to the hotel from the bustling Restauradores Square, a lively area brimming with inviting bars and cafes, offering a perfect end to your day in Portugal's dynamic capital.
Day 3 - Lisbon - Lagos - Cape St. Vincent - Albufeira
We set off early for southern Portugal, marvelling at the scenic landscapes as we traverse the expansive bridge over the Tagus River. Upon reaching the Algarve, the southern jewel of Portugal, we'll explore the historic city of Lagos. Known for its once-bustling port from which Portuguese explorers set sail to Brazil, Lagos features a charming historic centre surrounded by ancient walls. We'll pause here for lunch, allowing you time to savour the local cuisine. In the afternoon, we'll journey to Cape St. Vincent, the southwestern tip of mainland Europe. You'll be captivated by the dramatic cliffs and the opportunity to photograph the iconic Sagres fortress nearby. Our day concludes with a visit to Albufeira, a gorgeous coastal city where you can relax on the beaches or explore its vibrant historic centre. We'll provide accommodation in Albufeira or another nearby location in the Algarve.
Day 4 - Albufeira - Mrtola - Evora
Today, we set off from Albufeira to explore Faro, a tranquil city in the Algarve region, where we can enjoy a leisurely stroll. Continuing north, we journey into the Alentejo region, arriving at Mrtola. This historic town, situated on the banks of the Guadiana River, served as a significant hub during the Muslim era. Its prominent castle invites us to wander through streets lined with whitewashed houses and discover its historical secrets. Our travels then take us to vora, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here, we visit the Chapel of Bones (entry included), a fascinating chapel constructed with over 5,000 skeletons. We further explore this walled city, famous for its medieval palaces, Gothic churches, and an ancient Roman temple, before settling in for the night.
Day 5 - Evora - Marvo - Castelo de Vide - Tomar - Fatima
Today, we will journey through the serene landscapes of the Alentejo region, beginning with a visit to Marvo. This charming walled town offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding area. Next, we will explore Castelo de Vide, where you'll have the opportunity to visit its impressive castle and wander through the historic Jewish quarter. Here, you may choose to explore the medieval synagogue, now a museum, or simply enjoy the town's winding streets.After lunch, our travels continue to Tomar, a city famed for the Convent of Christ, a former castle-convent of the Order of the Templars admission is included. Before reaching Ftima, we will stop in Aljustrel, the birthplace of the three young shepherds who famously witnessed the apparitions of the Virgin Mary. Well visit Lucia's house and then head to Ftima, where you'll have free time at the Sanctuary of Ftima. If youre visiting in the summer, you might even catch the candlelight procession. Dinner is included this evening.
Day 6 - Fatima - Porto
Today, we journey north to the lively city of Porto, the second largest in Portugal, aiming to arrive around 11:00 a.m. Once there, we'll embark on a delightful 50-minute cruise along the Douro River aboard a traditional Portuguese "Rabelo" boat, offering a distinctive view of the city's picturesque riverside. Following the cruise, you'll have the opportunity to explore the bustling Ribeira district at your leisure. Known for its charming, narrow streets and historic merchant houses, Ribeira boasts quaint cafs perfect for a relaxing afternoon. After our explorations, we'll head to the hotel to unwind for the evening.
Day 7 - Porto - Bom Jesus do Monte Sanctuary - Cambados - Santiago de Compostela
On the seventh day of our adventure, we will journey through captivating landscapes, beginning in Braga. Here, we'll ascend to the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus aboard the world's oldest water-operated cable car, offering a unique way to enjoy the breathtaking vistas. After exploring the sanctuary, you might choose to take in the views along its scenic staircase. Our exploration continues into Galicia with a visit to Cambados in the Ras Baixas, a historic town known for its maritime traditions. We will board a glass-bottom boat for a trip along the Ra de Arousa, where you'll gain insights into mussel and oyster cultivation while enjoying wine and a tasting of fresh mussels. Around lunchtime, we will arrive in Santiago de Compostela, where a local guide will lead us through its medieval streets and to its renowned pilgrimage sites that date back to the Middle Ages. This city is steeped in history and offers a profound glimpse into the past.
Day 8 - Santiago de Compostela - Lugo - O Cebreiro - Leon - Oviedo
Today, we'll embark on a journey along the historic Way of St. James, starting with a visit to the charming city of Lugo. You'll have the opportunity to explore its well-preserved town centre and walk along the impressive Roman walls, which are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We then continue to O Cebreiro, a quaint Galician village known for its picturesque stone houses. Our journey leads us to Len by lunchtime, where we'll visit the renowned Gothic cathedral, celebrated for its stunning stained-glass windows. Afterwards, enjoy a leisurely stroll through Len's historic streets. We then make our way across the Cantabrian Range, arriving in the Asturias region. By evening, we'll reach Oviedo, where a guided tour will reveal its rich heritage, from the 9th-century cathedral to the modern Calatrava Congress Palace. Our exploration of the city will culminate in a traditional Asturian dinner, savouring local delicacies in a typical cider house.
Day 9 - Oviedo - Covadonga - Santillana del Mar - Santander
Today, we venture into the majestic landscapes of the Picos de Europa, beginning our day with a visit to the Basilica of Covadonga, a site of great historical and spiritual significance. From here, our journey takes us along the scenic coast to Santillana del Mar, renowned as one of Spain's most picturesque medieval towns, where time seems to stand still amidst its well-preserved architecture. We'll also have the opportunity to explore the Altamira Cave Museum, where fascinating insights into prehistoric art await. Later in the day, we head to Santander, the elegant capital of Cantabria, flanked by stunning views of the coastline and mountains. Here, a local guide will join us on a panoramic tour to uncover the highlights of this charming city by the bay.
Day 10 - Santander - Bilbao - Foronda Service Area - La Rioja - Zaragoza
We'll set off along the motorway tracing the stunning Cantabrian coast, where dramatic mountains meet the sea. Our destination is Bilbao, the largest city in the Basque Country. Here, we'll enjoy a brief guided city tour, taking in key attractions like the Guggenheim area, the old quarter, and the Cathedral. Following our exploration, you'll have some free time to enjoy authentic "pintxos"a perfect opportunity to sample the region's famed culinary delights. Our journey continues to La Rioja, celebrated for its exceptional wines. We'll delve into the rich history and culture of winemaking at the Wine Culture Museum in Briones. Later, we press on to Zaragoza, where well arrive in the evening, ready for more adventures.
Day 11 - Zaragoza - Poblet - Barcelona
Today, we start our morning in Zaragoza with a guided panoramic tour. Our first highlight is the Cathedral-Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar, followed by an exploration of Goya's masterpieces. We will also visit the Roman theatre and a striking Renaissance palace. Take the opportunity to wander by the Aljafera Palace, an exquisite testament to medieval Moorish architecture.After lunch, we journey towards Catalonia, where we'll explore Poblet Abbey. This beautifully preserved medieval monastery, set amidst scenic landscapes, offers a tranquil retreat into history. Upon finishing the tour, we continue to the vibrant city of Barcelona, arriving in the evening. Here, you can begin to immerse yourself in the city's unique blend of history, culture, and modernity.
Day 12 - Barcelona
In the morning, we'll set off on a panoramic tour of Barcelona, a captivating European treasure located alongside the Mediterranean Sea. Renowned for its vibrant energy, this city boasts an impressive collection of modernist architecture by Gaud, bustling streets like the famous Ramblas, and a rich history that includes hosting the Universal Exposition and the Olympics. You'll have the afternoon at your leisure to delve deeper into the city or simply unwind. As the evening draws near, we provide a transfer to Maremagnum, a contemporary complex rich with entertainment and dining possibilities by the sea, positioned near Plaza de Coln. Enjoy a relaxing evening stroll through this lively area and choose from a variety of inviting dining options.
Day 13 - Barcelona - Peniscola - Valencia - Madrid
We will journey south along the Mediterranean coast, stopping at the picturesque town of Pescola, known for its charming seaside setting and winding streets. Here, you'll have the opportunity to take a leisurely stroll through this enchanting walled town. Our next destination is Valencia, a vibrant city on the Levantine coast, where we aim to arrive around lunchtime. Perhaps you'll enjoy trying the city's iconic dish, paella. After lunch, at about 4:30 p.m., we will set off for Madrid, not before visiting Valencia's futuristic City of Arts and Sciences. We anticipate reaching Madrid between 8:30 and 9:00 p.m. To welcome you to the city, we'll organise a transfer to the lively Plaza Mayor, a perfect spot to explore and unwind while enjoying the variety of local pinchos or a glass of wine at one of its inviting restaurants. Please note, depending on passenger numbers, the trip from Valencia to Madrid might be via high-speed train for a quick and comfortable journey.
Day 14 - Madrid
Our exploration of Madrid begins with a thoroughly planned tour of the city's vibrant heart, where we will take in key landmarks including Paseo del Prado, Cibeles, Neptuno, Puerta de Alcal, Plaza de Coln, and Plaza Mayor. A visit to Retiro Park will follow, revealing its serene beauty with a look at its lake and the stunning Palacio de Cristal. We have included entry to the Santiago Bernabu Stadium, the renowned home of Real Madrid football club, allowing a glimpse into its rich sporting history. The afternoon is yours to enjoy at your leisure, whether you wish to delve deeper into Madrid's cultural offerings or simply relax. In the evening, we will facilitate your return to the hotel, bringing an end to a day rich in discovery and exploration.
Day 15 - Madrid - Granada
We set off from Madrid early, making our way south through the heart of La Mancha. Here, we pause in the quaint village of Puerto Lpice, which captures the spirit of Don Quixote's adventures. Our journey continues through the dramatic landscapes of Despeaperros as we cross into the vibrant region of Andalusia, ultimately reaching Granada. Lunch is included upon our arrival, providing a taste of local flavours. In the afternoon, if you have opted for the excursion, we will explore the awe-inspiring Alhambra Palace and its stunning Generalife Gardens with the guidance of a local expert. These iconic sites, dating back to the Arab period, offer a glimpse into Granadas rich cultural heritage. Please note, due to visitor restrictions at the Alhambra, its imperative to provide accurate personal details when booking to secure entry. If, exceptionally, entry is unavailable, we'll visit the equally historic Royal Alczar of Seville.
Day 16 - Granada - Malaga - Marbella - Ronda - Seville
We leave Granada in the morning and make our way towards the stunning Costa del Sol. Our first port of call is the vibrant city of Malaga, where you will have time to wander through the historic district, renowned for its impressive cathedral and the Picasso Museum that pays homage to the famous artist born here. We then journey along the scenic coastal highway, offering picturesque views of the Mediterranean Sea.Our next stop is Puerto Bans in Marbella, a glamorous and sophisticated marina known for its luxurious yachts and charming atmosphere. Spend some time here to soak up the elegant ambience. Later, we continue through the mountains, reminiscent of tales of old bandits who once roamed these lands, heading towards Ronda. Ronda is a remarkable white-washed town perched dramatically above a plunging gorge, offering spectacular views and a stunning historical backdrop. In the evening, we conclude our day's journey in Seville, where we will enjoy a delightful dinner at the hotel upon our arrival.
Day 17 - Seville
Today we explore the vibrant city of Seville. Our morning begins with a guided tour, allowing us to discover the enchanting cityscapes, including the majestic cathedral crowned by its iconic Giralda tower, the serene banks of the Guadalquivir River, and the historic districts of Santa Cruz and Triana. After immersing ourselves in the city's rich history, we'll enjoy a delightful boat ride on the Guadalquivir River, providing captivating panoramic views of Seville. As the day winds down, you may wish to experience an optional evening at a traditional flamenco 'tablao,' where the passionate rhythms of flamenco music and dance bring the vibrant Andalusian culture to life.
Day 18 - Seville - Merida - Evora - Lisbon
As we depart from Seville, our journey takes us through the serene landscapes of rolling hills and vast pasturelands towards the region of Extremadura. Our first stop is Mrida, where you can explore the Archaeological Ensemble of Mrida, a site celebrated for its remarkable preservation and recognised as a World Heritage Site. The site includes an ancient Roman theatre and amphitheatre, offering a fascinating glimpse into the past. You'll have time to wander through the historic pedestrian centre, where you can enjoy lunch at one of the local eateries. Later, our travels lead us to vora in Portugal, renowned for its whitewashed streets, Renaissance palaces, and impressive cathedral. Declared a World Heritage Site, vora offers a charming step back in time. By evening, we will arrive in Lisbon, where our day's journey comes to a close.
Day 19 - Lisbon
After breakfast, we bid farewell to our journey, filled with memorable experiences and remarkable sights. As we conclude our tour in Lisbon, you'll have the morning to reflect on your adventures and perhaps indulge in a final stroll through this enchanting city before heading on to your next destination.
