Day 1 - Lisbon
Welcome to your adventure in Lisbon! Upon arrival, we'll ensure you have an effortless transfer to your hotel. Once checked in, you'll have some free time to relax or explore the surroundings at your leisure. As evening approaches, keep an eye on the information boards in the hotel reception, where all the details about the commencement of your tour will be provided. This first day is a gentle introduction to the vibrant culture and atmosphere of the Portuguese capital. Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2 - Lisbon
On the second day of our journey, well set off for a sightseeing tour of Lisbon, fondly known as the city of seven hills. Our exploration will reveal the captivating charm of its winding alleys, the signature Portuguese tiles, and the distinctive "saudade" atmosphere set aglow by the Atlantics light. The tour includes a visit to the historic Belem neighbourhood, renowned as the departure point for the great Portuguese navigators of the 15th century. The afternoon is yours to spend as you wish. You might opt to stroll through Bairro Alto, known for its vibrant streets and a scenic viewpoint, or consider taking an optional excursion to the enchanting towns of Sintra, Cascais, and Estoril. As the day winds down, we'll regroup at the bustling Restauradores Square, alive with energetic bars and cafs, and head back to the hotel together.
Day 3 - Lisbon - Lagos - Cape St. Vincent - Albufeira
Well set off early for southern Portugal, taking in the stunning vistas as we cross the expansive bridge over the Tagus River. Our destination is the Algarve, a region renowned for its beautiful coastlines and rich history. Our first stop is the historic city of Lagos, once a bustling port from which Portuguese explorers set sail to Brazil. Here, you can immerse yourself in the atmospheric historic centre, nestled within ancient walls, and enjoy a leisurely lunch. In the afternoon, we'll journey to Cape St. Vincent, the south-western tip of mainland Europe, marked by dramatic, windswept cliffs. Nearby, there is the chance to capture the imposing Sagres fortress on camera. Later, we will make our way to Albufeira, a charming coastal town where you can unwind on sandy beaches or explore the vibrant historic centre. Well spend the night in Albufeira or another nearby location in the Algarve.
Day 4 - Albufeira - Mrtola - Evora
Today, we'll head to the tranquil city of Faro in the Algarve for a leisurely wander through its charming streets. After soaking up the peaceful atmosphere, we'll journey into the Alentejo region. Our destination, Mrtola, is a fascinating walled town-museum situated on the banks of the Guadiana River. Once a significant centre during the Muslim era, Mrtola invites you to explore its quaint streets lined with whitewashed houses and historical sites, all dominated by an imposing castle. From here, we'll continue to vora, renowned for its well-preserved medieval palaces, Gothic religious structures, and a remarkable Roman temple all within its city walls and recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A highlight of our visit will be the Chapel of Bones, a unique structure adorned with over 5,000 skeletons, turning it into a site of reflection rather than fear. Our day concludes after we have delved into the rich history and culture that vora has to offer.
Day 5 - Evora - Marvo - Castelo de Vide - Tomar - Fatima
Today, we journey through the scenic landscapes of the Alentejo region and make our first stop at Marvo, a charming walled village boasting splendid panoramic views of the surrounding area. Our exploration continues in Castelo de Vide, where you'll appreciate the impressive castle. Wander through its historic Jewish quarter and consider a visit to the medieval synagogue, now a museum. Enjoy a leisurely lunch, after which we'll head to Tomar. Known for the enigmatic Convent of Christ, this former stronghold of the Knights Templar, admission included, is a highlight of our day. Before reaching Ftima, we'll pause in Aljustrel, the birthplace of the three young shepherds who famously witnessed the apparitions of the Virgin Mary. You'll be able to see Lucias house. Upon arrival in Ftima, you may choose to spend some free time at the Sanctuary of Ftima and perhaps attend the candlelight procession, which is not available in winter. A delightful dinner will conclude your day.
Day 6 - Fatima - Porto
On day six, we venture north to Portugal's vibrant city of Porto, the second largest in the country, arriving around 11:00 a.m. We'll begin our exploration with a 50-minute cruise along the Douro River on a traditional Portuguese 'Rabelo' boat. This cruise offers a unique vantage point of the city's captivating riverside landscape. Following our river adventure, you will have free time to immerse yourself in the delightful Ribeira district, renowned for its narrow streets, historic merchant houses, and inviting cafs. Later, we'll regroup and make our way to the hotel for the evening.
Day 7 - Porto - Bom Jesus do Monte Sanctuary - Cambados - Santiago de Compostela
Today, we journey through remarkable landscapes as we head to Braga. Here, you can experience a ride on the world's oldest water-powered funicular, ascending to the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus, where you will be greeted by breathtaking views. After exploring, we suggest descending via the sanctuarys impressive staircase. Our adventure continues into Galicia, where we'll visit Cambados in the beautiful Ras Baixas region. You'll enjoy a glass-bottom boat excursion along the Ra de Arousa, offering insights into mussel and oyster farming while sampling local wine and mussels on board. By lunchtime, we'll arrive in Santiago de Compostela for a guided tour. Explore its medieval streets and discover significant pilgrimage sites dating back to the Middle Ages, providing a glimpse into the rich history and culture of the area.
Day 8 - Santiago de Compostela - Lugo - O Cebreiro - Leon - Oviedo
Today begins with a journey along the historic Way of St. James, first stopping in Lugo. Here, you'll have the chance to explore the city's historic centre, famed for its Roman walls a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Next, we visit the charming village of O Cebreiro, known for its traditional Galician stone architecture. Our journey continues to Len, arriving around lunchtime. In Len, we visit the magnificent Gothic cathedral, celebrated for its breathtaking stained-glass windows, with time to wander through its historic town centre. Crossing the scenic Cantabrian Range, we arrive in Oviedo by evening. To wrap up the day, join a guided tour of the city either upon arrival or the following morning. Over an hour and a half, we'll explore the 9th-century cathedral, Calatrava Congressional Palace, Campoamor Theatre, and the lively Calle de la Rua. Tonight, enjoy a traditional Asturian dinner in a typical cider house, immersing yourself in the region's celebrated culinary culture.
Day 9 - Oviedo - Covadonga - Santillana del Mar - Santander
We will set off to explore the stunning Picos de Europa, a magnificent national park renowned for its towering peaks and lush valleys. Our first stop will be the historic Basilica of Covadonga, nestled in a picturesque setting. From there, well continue our journey along the scenic coastline to the enchanting town of Santillana, celebrated for its perfectly preserved medieval quarter. Here, well visit the Altamira Cave Museum, where you can admire the remarkable replicas of prehistoric cave paintings, with admission included. Our day will conclude in Santander, an elegant city with stunning views over the bay, nestled between the mountains and the sea. You can look forward to a panoramic tour guided by a local expert, allowing us to fully appreciate the charm and beauty of this coastal gem.
Day 10 - Santander - Bilbao - Foronda Service Area - Madrid
We will traverse the breathtaking landscapes along the Cantabrian coast, where the majestic mountains meet the azure sea. Our destination is Bilbao, the largest city in the Basque Country. Here, we'll enjoy a guided tour led by a local expert, visiting key sites like the Guggenheim area, the historical old quarter, and the impressive Cathedral. Afterwards, you'll have the opportunity to indulge in some free time to explore further and perhaps savour the local speciality of "pintxos". Our journey then continues towards Madrid, where we anticipate arriving by 8:00 p.m. Please note, depending on the number of travellers, the trip from Bilbao to Madrid might be conducted via a regular coach or train service.
Day 11 - Madrid
In the morning, we'll set off on an illuminating tour of central Madrid. Explore the city's iconic sites, including the elegant Paseo del Prado, the striking fountains of Cibeles and Neptuno, the grand Puerta de Alcal, and the vibrant Plaza Mayor. We'll also visit the lush Retiro Park, a serene escape in the heart of the city, home to a picturesque lake and the stunning Palacio de Cristal. Our tour includes admission to the Santiago Bernabu Stadium, the famed home of Real Madrid, hailed by many as the world's premier football club. The afternoon is yours to enjoy at leisure, giving you the perfect opportunity to explore more of Madrid's fascinating sights or simply relax. In the evening, we'll ensure a convenient transfer back to the hotel.
