Day 1 - Mexico City
Welcome to Mexico! Upon arrival in Mexico City, we will ensure you are comfortably transferred to your hotel, after which you're free to enjoy your time exploring this vibrant city at your own pace. Later in the afternoon, our guide will be in contact to provide any necessary information and assist you with any queries. Enjoy your first evening in this bustling metropolis, absorbing the lively atmosphere as you settle into your surroundings. Whether you choose to unwind after your flight or dive straight into discovering Mexico City's vibrant culture, your adventure in this fascinating country has only just begun. Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2 - Mexico City
Following breakfast, our adventure begins in Mexico City as we set out to explore both the city and the extraordinary site of Teotihuacan, located just a short drive of 40 km from the capital. Our first stop is the Plaza of the Three Cultures, a unique place where Mexico's deep-rooted history intertwines with its modern day. We then continue to the magnificent archaeological site of Teotihuacan. Here, we delve into the history of this ancient city, marvelling at the Pyramids of the Sun and Moon, exploring the Temple of Quetzalpapalotl, and walking along the famed Avenue of the Dead. Well also visit a local artisan centre to appreciate traditional crafts. After our visit to Teotihuacan, we make our way back to Mexico City, where we visit the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, a revered site for many Catholics and the spiritual heart of Latin America. The day concludes back at the hotel, leaving you free to enjoy the remainder of your evening at your leisure.
Day 3 - Mexico City - Queretaro
On the third day, enjoy a leisurely morning in Mexico City. Following lunch, we'll take care of your transfer to the bus station for your journey to Quertaro, situated about 200 km from Mexico City. Upon reaching the station, you'll be whisked away to your hotel. Quertaro is a city steeped in history, boasting a rich cultural and architectural heritage. Established in 1531, it played instrumental roles in both Mexico's War of Independence and the Mexican Revolution. The city's historic centre, a recognised UNESCO World Heritage Site, brims with delightful plazas, ornate baroque churches, and grand colonial edifices. Over the upcoming days, you'll have ample opportunity to wander through its splendid centre, explore the cobbled streets, and marvel at vibrant plazas with their colonial charm. Don't miss out on the iconic 18th-century aqueduct, its lush gardens, and the lively markets that capture the essence of this extraordinary city.
Day 4 - Queretaro
Today, we set out to explore the charming town of San Sebastin de Bernal, designated a Pueblo Mgico for its enchanting appeal. Nestled at the foot of the world's third-largest monolith, this tranquil town is renowned for its skilled textile artisans. Our journey continues to Tequisquiapan, famous for its soothing mineral water spas and picturesque colonial-style architecture along its cobbled streets. This area is also known for its artisanal products, particularly the finely crafted woven baskets available at the local market.Our adventure includes a guided tour, allowing us to delve into the rich local history. We will then enjoy a delightful visit to the San Patricio Winery and Bocanegra Cheese Cellar, where you'll learn about the intricacies of cheese production and the unique challenges faced by high-altitude winemaking. This visit is enhanced by a tasting session featuring a selection of regional wines.
Day 5 - Queretaro
This morning in Quertaro is yours to explore at your leisure, perhaps to further discover its charming historical centre with its quaint plazas and colonial architecture. In the afternoon, join us for a truly unique experience at Hacienda Atongo, located just 40 kilometres from Quertaro. This historic 17th-century estate is brought to life through an engaging guided tour, enriched with theatrical performances by local actors embodying characters from the past. Delve into the rich history of the hacienda as you explore its main buildings and vineyard. To enhance your visit, we'll enjoy a refreshing drink crafted from wine produced on the estate. Later, we'll return to Quertaro for the evening.
Day 6 - Queretaro - Tula - Puebla
We set out for Tula, once the bustling centre of the Toltec civilisation. Entry to its fascinating archaeological site is included. As we explore, you'll encounter the awe-inspiring Atlantean figuresimposing warrior statues reaching four metres in heightas well as impressive pyramids, palaces, and intricately carved columns, all testament to this sophisticated pre-Hispanic culture. Our journey continues to Puebla, a city steeped in history and famed for its culinary delights, splendid colonial architecture, and exquisite ceramics. Notable sights include the grand Renaissance-style cathedral and the vibrant main square, perfect for soaking up the lively ambience of this animated city where we will stay overnight.
Day 7 - Puebla - Oaxaca
As we journey towards the state of Oaxaca today, you'll be captivated by the stunning mountainous landscapes along the way. Upon reaching Oaxaca by late morning, we'll provide an included visit to this UNESCO World Heritage city, celebrated for its significant historical heritage, having been initially founded by the Aztecs. Our exploration continues as we head to Monte Albn, nestled on a mountaintop 400 metres above the Oaxaca Valley. This ancient siteadmission and a guided tour are includedis the most impressive of the Zapotec cities, offering fascinating insights into its past. After our visit, we'll return to Oaxaca. You will then have free time to immerse yourself in the local culture, allowing you to explore the city as you wish.
Day 8 - Oaxaca - San Pablo Villa de Mitla - Tuxtla Gutirrez
We'll set off early this morning to visit San Pablo Villa de Mitla, a delightful Pueblo Mgico. You'll have time to wander around the quaint 16th-century Church of San Pablo and explore its charming, rustic streets. Our journey continues as we make our way through the scenic mountains of Oaxaca towards the Isthmus. We'll enjoy lunch along the route before arriving in Tuxtla Gutirrez, the bustling capital of Chiapas, by late afternoon.
Day 9 - Tuxtla Gutirrez - Sumidero Canyon - Chiapa de Corzo - Zinacantn - San Juan Chamula - San Cristobal de las Casas
We begin our day with a captivating boat journey through the Sumidero Canyon, a natural marvel nearly a kilometre deep and stretching over 14 kilometres. The canyon's towering cliffs and diverse wildlife make this a truly awe-inspiring experience. We then proceed to Chiapa de Corzo, a colonial town rich in tradition and history. Afterwards, we delve deeper into the essence of Mayan culture as we visit vibrant Tzotzil communities. In Zinacantn, you'll have the opportunity to admire the intricate garments worn by local women and explore the colourful shops and weaving workshops. Our journey continues to San Juan Chamula, where the unique church practices blend Christian and pre-Columbian traditions, offering a truly singular experience. Later, we head to San Cristbal de las Casas, a picturesque colonial city founded in 1528, where you can enjoy the afternoon at your leisure, taking in the city's charming atmosphere.
Day 10 - San Cristobal de las Casas
Today, we'll set off on an 8-hour excursion with a local tour operator from San Cristobal de las Casas. Our first destination is Las Grutas del Mamut, named for its rock formation resembling a prehistoric mammoth. Inside, you'll find captivating rock formations that make this enormous cave a must-see. Next, we head to El Arcotete Ecotourism Park, a place of captivating beauty with lush vegetation and diverse wildlife. Dominating this landscape is a striking natural stone archway, which has been sculpted over thousands of years by the Fogtico River. The formation features a blend of natural arches and caves, including numerous caverns, rock formations, and stalactites ripe for exploration. Our journey concludes at Rancho Nuevo Ecotourism Park, where a cave stretches over 10.2 kilometres and delves up to 550 metres deep. Well follow a well-lit path extending 750 metres into the cave, showcasing the intricate and mesmerising forms crafted by stalactites and stalagmites. Nestled in a serene conifer forest, you can also partake in various activities here, including horseback riding, camping, hiking, and spelunking. We'll return to San Cristobal de las Casas to enjoy some free time exploring this charming locale at your own pace.
Day 11 - San Cristobal de las Casas
We have an enriching day ahead with a 5-hour excursion led by a local tour operator. Our destination is Moxviquil, a model for sustainable learning and significantly rich in natural beauty. Here, you'll have the chance to engage with nature through activities such as birdwatching, studying pollinators and insects, and exploring the stunning orchid garden. The interpretive hiking trail offers a unique opportunity to connect directly with nature's wonders. After our morning in Moxviquil, we'll shift our focus to cultural preservation with a visit to the Museum of Maya Medicine. Located in Chiapas, this museum is dedicated to the preservation of Tsotsil-Tseltal healing practices. You'll learn about the traditional medical practices of local healers and the therapeutic methods they use. These include the Jilol (pulse reader), Koponej witz (mountain prayer specialist), Tzakbak (bone-setter), Jvetome (midwife), and Acvomol (herbalist). Once we've explored these cultural insights, we'll return to our hotel, leaving you free to enjoy the remainder of your afternoon at your leisure.
Day 12 - San Cristobal de las Casas - Tuxtla Gutirrez
As your journey comes to its close, we will arrange a transfer to Tuxtla Gutirrez airport, timed to suit your departing flight. Here, you can board the most appropriate flight (not included) either back to Mexico City or onwards to your next destination. This marks the conclusion of your adventure, allowing you to reflect on the diverse cultural and scenic experiences youve embraced. Safe travels onward!
