Led by a local guide, we'll delve into the fascinating myths and stunning sights of these ancient ruins, including the iconic Temple of Kukulkan (also known as 'El Castillo'), the eerie Platform of the Skulls, and the expansive Plaza of a Thousand Columns. Following this, prepare to swim in the crystal-clear waters of a remarkable cenote, a natural limestone swimming hole that plunges into the depths.
Day 3 - Tulum Day Trip
Playa del Carmen - Tulum - Playa del Carmen. This morning, we're setting off for Tulum. Once there, we can either explore the archaeological Tulum Ruins or enjoy the crystal-clear waters at Tulum Beach. Once back in Playa, we'll have dinner and drinks. We can tuck into some avocado, take a tequila shot (or two), and have a great time!
Day 4 - Playa del Carmen to Bacalar
Playa del Carmen - Bacalar. Today we set off on our journey south through the Yucatan Peninsula. Our destination is Bacalar, famous for its breathtakingly vibrant blue lagoon. After checking in, we'll explore the lagoon in the most captivating way - on a boat ride. As we glide across the lagoon, you'll have the opportunity to cool off in the crystal-clear waters and perhaps even toast with a beer in celebration.
Day 5 - Caye Caulker
Bacalar - Caye Caulker (Belize). Today, we continue heading south as we cross the border into Belize, the next country on our trip. Known for the world’s second-largest barrier reef and its vibrant Caribbean culture, Belize serves as our entry point to island life. We'll hop on a short ferry ride to Caye Caulker, where our hotel is conveniently located just a minute from the beach. After dropping off your bags, head straight to the white sandy shores. Later, we'll meet up to enjoy the sunset on the opposite side of the island, where local stingrays glide right between your legs.
Day 6 - Hol Chan Marine Reserve
Prepare your snorkels as we embark on a boat journey to the stunning Hol Chan Marine Reserve, renowned for its diverse marine life. We'll make several stops along the barrier reef, providing ample chances to observe colourful fish and corals. We also hope to spot gentle manatees, affectionately known as "sea cows" (seasonal). For dinner, we'll enjoy Caribbean cuisine, featuring the freshest fish topped with a delicious Caribbean curry sauce.
Day 7 - Caye Caulker Beach Day
Today is dedicated to some well-earned relaxation. You might go directly to the beach to enjoy the sunshine and relax, or perhaps explore the island’s renowned Split, known for its all-day music and refreshing drinks. The island's atmosphere is perfect for dipping in and out of the crystal-clear waters to stay cool while sipping a cocktail. If sunbathing isn't your preference, there are numerous activities available, such as paddle boarding or snorkelling.
Day 8 - Belize to Guatemala
Caye Caulker - Flores (Guatemala). As we leave our island paradise, we look forward to exploring our third country: Guatemala. First, we journey through Belize, stopping to visit a local Mayan village for lunch. We'll prepare a traditional Mayan meal together, gaining an understanding of the local history and lifestyle. After satisfying our appetites, we'll head to the border and enter Guatemala, where we'll check into our hotel on the picturesque island of Flores.
Day 9 - Tikal Day Trip
Prepare to embrace your inner Indiana Jones as we journey back thousands of years. Nestled deep within the northern jungles of Guatemala lies a vast archaeological site, one of the largest remnants of the pre-Columbian Maya civilization. Highlights include the towering Lost World (Mundo Perdido) Pyramid and the iconic Temple of the Grand Jaguar, where you'll feel as though you're walking in the footsteps of an ancient, enigmatic civilization. Accompanied by our expert local guide, we'll explore the complex, vividly bringing the history of the site to life. We head back to Flores for the evening.
Day 10 - Candelaria Caves & Coban
Flores - Coban. Guatemala is a sizable country, and today we have a lot of ground to cover as we travel south toward the Guatemalan Highlands. Not to worry - we'll take a break by visiting the Candelaria Caves. This cave system extends approximately 80 km and is highly significant in Mayan culture, as it is considered a gateway to the underworld. After exploring the depths, we'll emerge back into the daylight and continue our journey toward Coban, situated at the edge of the highlands.
Day 11 - Coban Jungles & Tubing
This morning, we’ll embark on an adventure into the highlands, whisked away by a fleet of 4x4s. Brace yourself as we navigate the winding mountain roads, which offer breathtaking views on both sides. Our adventure continues with a hike into the jungle, where a stunning bright blue river awaits, flowing through the mountains and cascading down the valley, creating beautiful pools edged with vibrant, light green algae. We’ll have a couple of hours to float in these refreshing pools, soak up the sun, and leisurely drift down the river in rubber rings. Finally, we’ll arrive at a traditional Mayan home to enjoy a mouth-watering lunch. After a memorable day, we head back to Coban for the night.
Day 12 - Panajachel & Lake Atitlan
Coban - Chichicastenango - Panajachel. This morning, our journey takes us south through the highlands, with a stop in the vibrant town of Chichicastenango. On market days, it hosts one of the largest markets in Central America. Next, we will head to Panajachel, which is our overnight destination and is located right by the famous Lake Atitlán. You'll want to take a moment to enjoy the gentle lapping of the lake's water against the shore and the breathtaking view of the towering volcanoes surrounding the lake.
Day 13 - San Juan La Laguna
Panajachel - San Juan La Laguna. For many people living near Lake Atitlan, the fastest way to travel and complete tasks between towns is by taking local boats across the lake. Naturally, we’ll do the same - the views from the water are truly stunning! Our first destination is the charming town of San Marcos, renowned for its relaxed, bohemian atmosphere and its peaceful nature reserve along the water - ideal for a refreshing swim. Next, we’ll make our way to San Juan, where we’ll spend the night in a local homestay with Mayan families. During a traditional dinner, we’ll have the chance to learn some Mayan phrases and further practice our Spanish.
Day 14 - Mayan Face Mountain & Antigua
San Juan La Laguna - Antigua. Today, we're beginning early with a moonlit hike to the summit of Mayan Face Mountain, known for its unique silhouette that resembles a face when viewed from below. It's an early start but worth it for the incredible sunrise that reveals the stunning view of Lake Atitlan. Our local guides will serve us hot cocoa before we descend and enjoy breakfast with our local families. We then say our goodbyes and set off for Antigua, our destination for tonight.
Day 15 - Antigua Sightseeing & Free Time
In the morning, we have a volcano briefing in preparation for tomorrow, followed by a guided walk through the colonial centre of Antigua, a long-time favourite of both travellers and locals. In the afternoon, you have free time to explore its Spanish architecture, welcoming cafés, and cosy restaurants. Keep your camera ready - Antigua offers a photo opportunity at every corner.
Day 16 - Acatenango Volcano Hike
It's another active day as we lace up our hiking boots and embark on an adventure to the majestic volcanoes you've admired from afar. This hike is challenging but promises to become one of your favourites. After several hours, we'll reach the summit of Acatenango Volcano, where the air thins and the clouds surround us, offering breathtaking views. As the sun sets, we'll arrive at our basecamp for the night, with a stunning view of Guatemala's most active volcano, Volcan Fuego, also known as "Fire Volcano." This volcano frequently releases bursts of lava, and its fiery eruptions against the evening sky are truly unforgettable.
Please note: The overnight hike up Acatenango is a challenging 7-hour ascent with steep, rugged terrain, requiring good fitness, warm layers, proper footwear, and travel insurance covering hikes up to 4,000 metres. It’s an epic adventure, but if you prefer not to take part, we offer alternative accommodation and a traditional chocolate-making experience in Antigua. Please let us know at the time of booking.
Day 17 - Antigua at Leisure
Just like any adventure, what ascends must eventually descend. Once we come down from the volcano, you'll have the opportunity to freshen up and further explore the streets of Antigua at leisure, revisiting any attractions you might have missed. Afterwards, we'll get dressed up for a memorable final dinner and drinks in Guatemala. But rest assured, there's still plenty of excitement to come! We're heading to Costa Rica tomorrow!
Day 18 - Fly to San Jose
Antigua - San Jose (Costa Rica). This morning we say farewell to Guatemala and transfer to the airport for our included flight to San Jose, Costa Rica. Once we land in San Jose, you'll have the chance to dive into a new culture and explore the city, depending on our arrival time. San Jose is home to outstanding museums where you can begin to learn about this amazing country first-hand. We'll venture out for our first dinner in Costa Rica, providing a perfect opportunity to meet new travel companions and prepare for the next thrilling part of our journey.

Day 19 - San Jose Sightseeing & La Fortuna
San Jose - La Fortuna. Today, we explore Costa Rica's capital, San Jose on a walking tour of the city. Our local guide will showcase the fascinating architecture and historical landmarks at every turn. Afterward, we'll depart the city and head to La Fortuna, making a stop at the Ox Cart Museum along the route. These intricately decorated carts were crucial to Costa Rican farm life and have become a national emblem.
Upon reaching La Fortuna, the entry point to Costa Rica's breathtaking wilderness, it's impossible to miss the towering Arenal Volcano that dominates the landscape. Once primarily a farming community, this delightful town is now famous for its geothermal activity and wellness retreats tucked away in the jungle. It's time to embrace the pura vida spirit!
Day 20 - Hanging Bridges & Arenal Volcano
Today we'll head into the rainforest, crossing a network of hanging bridges above the jungle treetops. Keep your eyes peeled for monkeys, colourful toucans and slow-moving sloths as we explore. We should get a decent view of the Arenal Volcano too. As evening descends and the sun sets, a different world of wildlife comes to life. We’ll venture into the jungle after dark to uncover its nocturnal wonders, guided safely by an enthusiastic expert who will point out the creatures we come across, potentially rare frogs, monkeys, reptiles and even tapirs.
Day 21 - La Fortuna
Today is our final day in La Fortuna, and we begin with a visit to a local family, who have lived in La Fortuna for generations. They will guide us around their farm, where we might observe some of the wildlife that shares their home. You'll learn about the harvesting of local fruits and vegetables and have the opportunity to taste some exceptionally sweet fruits. We'll tuck into a traditional Casado lunch, paired with freshly brewed coffee from their own farm. This afternoon, you'll have the chance to relax in natural hot springs, celebrated for their healing properties due to the volcanic mineral waters.
Day 22 - Rio Celeste National Park & Rincon de la Vieja

Next, we make our way into Rio Celeste National Park. The park is most well-known for the colour of its water (and waterfall) - a stunning diamond blue hue.
In the afternoon, we’ll reach Rincon de la Vieja, and can settle into our jungle accommodation, surrounded by the sounds of the wild.
Day 23 - Rincon de la Vieja
Get ready for an adventure in Rincon de la Vieja National Park, where the jungle trails are a great place to take in some of Costa Rica's incredible biodiversity. In the morning, we'll hike through the park, exploring volcanic vents and mud pits, and encountering its diverse wildlife, which includes over 300 bird species, as well as monkeys, tapirs, reptiles, and possibly even a jaguar - you're more likely to hear the coughing roar of the big cats than you are to spot one.
In the afternoon, you can unwind by the hotel pool, enjoying the calming sounds of the jungle. Alternatively, there's the option to zipline through the forest canopy, gliding above the misty treetops and descending into the mountains.
