Day 1 - Mexico City
Arriving in Mexico City marks the beginning of your exciting adventure. Once you reach the airport, a transfer will take you to your hotel, where you can settle in and relax. Enjoy the ease of having the afternoon and evening free to explore the vibrant capital of Mexico at your own pace. Whether you choose to sample the local cuisine, wander through the bustling streets, or unwind after your journey, the city offers a myriad of experiences. Later in the day, our guide will reach out to you to provide any necessary information and assist with your travel needs. Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2 - Mexico City
Following breakfast, we delve into the heart of Mexico City and embark on an engaging exploration that includes the awe-inspiring site of Teotihuacan, just 40 kilometres from the city. Our day begins at the Plaza of the Three Cultures, a place where ancient and modern Mexico coexist. From there, we make our way to Teotihuacan, one of the most significant archaeological sites in the Americas. Here, we witness the grandeur of the monumental Pyramids of the Sun and Moon, explore the Temple of Quetzalpapalotl, the Citadel, and stroll along the Avenue of the Dead. Our visit also includes a stop at a local artisan centre, providing insight into the regions rich craftsmanship. On our return to the city, we visit the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, a revered site and the most important Marian shrine in Latin America. After returning to the hotel, the remainder of the day is yours to explore at your leisure.
Day 3 - Mexico City - Tepoztlan - Cuernavaca - Taxco
After breakfast, we leave Mexico City and head to Tepoztln in the state of Morelos. This enchanting Pueblo Mgico, nestled against a lush green hillside crowned with a small pyramid, is renowned for its spirituality and wellness offerings. In Tepoztln, youll have the chance to wander through the town's charming streets or explore the artisan market. Our journey continues to Cuernavaca, the capital of Morelos, famously dubbed "The City of Eternal Spring." Founded in pre-Hispanic times, Cuernavaca later became a retreat for Aztec nobility and the colonial Spanish elite. The highlights here include the Palace of Hernn Corts, the cathedral, and the city's stunning parks and gardens. After some free time for lunch, we proceed to Taxco in Guerrero. This picturesque Pueblo Mgico, set amidst mountains, is celebrated for its colonial allure, cobbled streets, whitewashed houses, and exceptional silver craftsmanship. You'll have time to explore this unforgettable city before settling in for the night.
Day 4 - Taxco - Chilpancingo - Acapulco
After enjoying breakfast, we travel through picturesque mountains to Chilpancingo de los Bravo, the lively capital of Guerrero. This city holds an important place in Mexicos independence history. Our guide will take you to the regional museum, renowned for its large murals portraying Mexicos rich past. We continue our journey to Acapulco, famous for its stunning beaches and breathtaking scenery. Upon arrival, youll have the opportunity to relax and perhaps enjoy lunch at one of the many beachfront restaurants. In the afternoon, we will visit La Fortaleza, a 17th-century fort built to defend the city against pirate attacks entrance included. After the tour, well transfer to your hotel, allowing you free time to unwind and explore at your leisure.
Day 5 - Acapulco - Zihuatanejo
After breakfast, we journey along the scenic Pacific Coast, travelling 230 km to Zihuatanejo. Known for its unspoiled beaches, laid-back vibe, and charming cobblestone streets, this destination maintains the feel of its roots as a once-quaint fishing village. Our itinerary includes a brief boat ride to Playa Las Gatas, a secluded beach reachable only by sea, where you can enjoy swimming, relaxation, and a leisurely lunch at one of the seaside restaurants. Following our return by boat, you will settle into your accommodation and have free time to explore. Please be aware that during peak season, accommodation in Zihuatanejo may be limited. If necessary, we may depart later in the afternoon to stay in the nearby city of Lzaro Crdenas.
Day 6 - Zihuatanejo - Janitzio - Patzcuaro
On the sixth day of our journey, we'll witness a significant change in the landscape as we transition from desert expanses to the verdant mountains of Michoacn. Our adventure begins with a visit to Lake Ptzcuaro, where we'll embark on a scenic 30-minute boat trip to Janitzio Island. This island is home to the Purpecha community, renowned for their rich traditions and distinctive butterfly-net fishing technique. You'll have time here to savour lunch at a local restaurant, wander through the quaint streets, and, if inclined, climb to the towering statue of Jos Mara Morelos for panoramic views.Following our visit to Janitzio, we will return by boat to Ptzcuaro. This charming colonial town offers an enchanting mix of pre-Hispanic heritage, colonial architecture, vibrant artisan markets, and a warm, inviting atmosphere. With its unique blend of history and culture, Ptzcuaro promises to be an unforgettable stop on our journey.
Day 7 - Patzcuaro - Morelia - Cuitzeo del porvenir - Guadalajara
Our day begins as we set off for Morelia, the capital of Michoacn, famed for its beautiful pink stone architecture. Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the city boasts a rich history visible in its stunning cathedral, the vibrant Plaza de Armas, and the esteemed university founded in 1540. You will have some free time here to uncover the city's charm and enjoy a leisurely lunch. Later, we journey to Cuitzeo del Porvenir, a quaint town situated by the side of Mexico's second-largest lake. Here, you'll be enchanted by a visit to the Ex-Convent of Santa Mara Magdalena, celebrated for its exquisite Plateresque architectural style dating back to the 16th century. Take a leisurely walk through the cobblestone streets, soaking up the village atmosphere before we continue onwards to Guadalajara. Known as the birthplace of Mariachi music and Tequila, Guadalajara, the lively capital of Jalisco, will welcome us as we arrive in the evening.
Day 8 - Guadalajara
We begin our day in Guadalajara, a vibrant modern city with a rich colonial heritage. Our first stop is the historic centre, where we explore the stunning cathedral, bustling market, and lively Tapata Square. Next, we visit the Cabaas Hospice, an architectural masterpiece and UNESCO World Heritage site that captivates with its breathtaking murals.Our adventure continues as we head to the picturesque town of Tequila, home to a world-renowned drink. Here, we treat you to a guided trip through the Mundo Cuervo distillery, where you'll discover the intricate process behind producing this iconic beverage, complete with a tasting session. Afterwards, you have free time to stroll around the charming streets of Tequila and enjoy lunch at your leisure. We then make our way back to Guadalajara in the afternoon.
Day 9 - Guadalajara - Guanajuato
We depart from Guadalajara, venturing into the state of Guanajuato, where we arrive around midday. In the afternoon, a guided tour introduces us to this stunning university city, a UNESCO World Heritage site. With its steep hillsides and narrow, picturesque streets, the city's charm is undeniable. We explore its beautiful churches and historic sites, and later, we include a cable car ride to "El Ppila" for a breathtaking panoramic view of the city.
Day 10 - Guanajuato - Dolores Hidalgo - San Miguel de Allende - Queretaro
On Day 10, we continue our exploration of Mexico's majestic landscapes by travelling through the mountains to Dolores Hidalgo, recognised as the birthplace of Mexican independence. This area is steeped in history and offers a fascinating glimpse into the country's pivotal moments. Our next stop is the Sanctuary of Atotonilco, famously known as the "Sanctuary of God and Country" and a designated World Heritage Site. While visits inside the Sanctuary might not always be possible due to ongoing retreats, the site's historical significance remains a highlight of our journey.We then proceed to the enchanting San Miguel de Allende, celebrated for its stunning colonial architecture and delightful cobblestone streets, which have earned it World Heritage status. There's ample time for you to wander and soak in the city's vibrant atmosphere at your own pace.Later in the day, we arrive in Queretaro, another gem of colonial charm. Its magnificent colonial centre is home to Plaza de Armas, bustling restaurants, and pedestrian-friendly streets, all contributing to its lively and welcoming ambiance.
Day 11 - Queretaro - Tula - Puebla
On day 11, we set off for Tula, once the thriving capital of the Toltecs. Admission to the archaeological site is included, allowing us to see the majestic Atlantean figurestowering statues of warriors standing four metres high. As you wander, you'll also discover pyramids, palaces, and intricately carved columns, all testament to this pre-Hispanic civilisation's sophistication. Our journey continues to Puebla, a city famed for its rich culinary heritage, stunning colonial architecture, and exquisite ceramics. Here, you can marvel at the grand Renaissance cathedral and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere of the main square. We will spend the night in this dynamic city, soaking up its lively charm.
Day 12 - Puebla - Oaxaca
We travel towards the vibrant state of Oaxaca, traversing picturesque mountainous landscapes along the way. By late morning, we arrive in Oaxaca, a city recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site, originally established by the Aztecs and renowned for its rich historical legacy. Our day continues with a journey to Monte Albn, an awe-inspiring archaeological site situated on a hilltop that rises 400 metres above the Oaxaca Valley. As we explore this ancient Zapotec city, a guided tour provides further insight into its heritage, with entry tickets included. Afterwards, we return to Oaxaca, where you are free to delve further into the city's alluring streets and cultural attractions at your leisure.
Day 13 - Oaxaca - San Pablo Villa de Mitla - Tuxtla Gutirrez
We start our day with an early departure, making our way to San Pablo Villa de Mitla, a delightful Pueblo Mgico. You will have the chance to wander through the picturesque rustic streets and visit the 16th-century Church of San Pablo. Following this, we will continue our journey through the scenic mountains of Oaxaca, heading towards the Isthmus. Lunch is included on our route. By late afternoon, we will arrive in Tuxtla Gutirrez, the bustling capital of Chiapas.
Day 14 - Tuxtla Gutirrez - Sumidero Canyon - Chiapa de Corzo - Zinacantn - San Juan Chamula - San Cristobal de las Casas
Today, we embark on a captivating journey starting with the remarkable Sumidero Canyon. We'll board a boat to navigate this breathtaking canyon, which stretches an impressive 14 kilometres and reaches depths of nearly one kilometre. Following this exhilarating experience, well stroll through Chiapa de Corzo, a charming colonial town rich in tradition and culture. Our adventure continues as we delve deeper into Mayan heritage, visiting picturesque villages inhabited by the Tzotzil people. In Zinacantn, well admire the vibrant traditional dresses and explore delightful shops and weaving workshops. Our journey then leads to San Juan Chamula, where you'll witness the unique fusion of Christian and pre-Columbian traditions in its intriguing church rituals. We wrap up our day heading to San Cristbal de las Casas, an enchanting colonial city established in 1528. You will have the afternoon free to explore this beautiful city at your own pace.
Day 15 - San Cristobal de las Casas
Today, we embark on an eight-hour excursion from San Cristbal de las Casas with a local tour operator. Our journey begins at Las Grutas del Mamut, a magnificent cave named for its resemblance to a prehistoric mammoth due to its striking rock formations. This vast cave is filled with awe-inspiring geological structures that captivate visitors. We then move on to El Arcotete Ecotourism Park, a scenic site teeming with diverse vegetation and wildlife. A highlight here is the impressive natural stone archway, carved over millennia by the Fojtico River, offering a unique blend of arches and caves complete with intriguing caverns, rock formations, and stalactites to explore.Our adventure continues at Rancho Nuevo Ecotourism Park, featuring a cave stretching 10.2 kilometres in length, with some parts reaching depths of 550 metres. An illuminated path allows us to venture 750 metres into the cave, showcasing the mesmerising stalactites and stalagmites. This geological wonder is nestled within a conifer forest, offering opportunities for horseback riding, camping, hiking, and spelunking for those inclined.After a day of exploration, we'll return to San Cristbal de las Casas, where you have free time to unwind or further explore this charming colonial city.
Day 16 - San Cristobal de las Casas
Today, we have a 5-hour excursion planned with a local tour operator to Moxviquil, a remarkable example of a sustainability-focused learning community. This verdant area brims with activities such as birdwatching and observing pollinators and insects. You can explore the exquisite orchid garden and embark on the signature interpretive hiking trail, providing an exceptional opportunity to connect with nature. Following our time at Moxviquil, we'll visit the Museum of Maya Medicine, which is dedicated to preserving and sharing the Tsotsil-Tseltal healing practices of Chiapas. The museum offers insight into traditional medical practices and showcases the methods and resources used by community healers. You'll learn about the roles of various healers, such as the Jilol, who reads pulses; the Koponej witz, a specialist in mountain prayers; the Tzakbak, who sets bones; the Jvetome, a midwife; and the Acvomol, known for herbal remedies.Afterwards, we'll return to our hotel, leaving the remainder of the afternoon free for you to explore and enjoy San Cristobal de las Casas at your own pace.
Day 17 - San Cristobal de las Casas - Tuxtla Gutirrez
As your journey concludes, we will arrange a transfer from San Cristbal de las Casas to Tuxtla Gutirrez airport. This will align with your flight schedule, allowing you to catch the most suitable flight (please note that this is not included) either back to Mexico City or onward to another destination of your choice.
