Day 1 - Mexico City
Upon arriving in Mexico City, you'll be transferred to your hotel. After check-in, the rest of the day is yours to explore or unwind as you wish. Our guide will reach out to you later in the afternoon to discuss the itinerary and answer any questions you may have, setting the tone for your exciting journey through Mexico. Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2 - Mexico City
After breakfast, we embark on a fascinating day of exploration in Mexico City and its surrounding treasures. Our first stop is the Plaza of the Three Cultures, a unique spot where ancient, colonial, and modern architecture coexist, reflecting Mexico's rich history. We then journey to Teotihuacan, situated just 40 km from the capital. Here, youll be captivated by the grandeur of the Pyramids of the Sun and Moon, the Temple of Quetzalpapalotl, the Citadel, and the Avenue of the Deadall impressive relics of a once-thriving civilisation. Well take a moment to appreciate local craftsmanship at an artisan centre before returning to the city. En route, we visit the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, an important pilgrimage site for many across Latin America. Once we return to the hotel, youll have the rest of the afternoon and evening to enjoy at your leisure, allowing ample time to soak in the vibrant culture of Mexico City.
Day 3 - Mexico City - Tepoztlan - Cuernavaca - Taxco
On the third day of our journey, after breakfast, we leave the bustling cityscape of Mexico City behind and venture into the state of Morelos, where our first stop is Tepoztln, a delightful town officially recognised as a 'Pueblo Mgico.' Nestled against a verdant hillside topped with an ancient pyramid, Tepoztln is famed for its spiritual and wellness offerings. Here, you'll have free time to wander the picturesque streets or explore the local artisan market. Following this, we head to Cuernavaca, the capital of Morelos, celebrated for its perpetual spring-like climate. Founded in pre-Hispanic times and later a retreat for Aztec and colonial Spanish nobility, Cuernavaca boasts attractions like the Palace of Hernn Corts, the cathedral, and lush gardens. You will have some free time for lunch before we continue our journey to Taxco in the state of Guerrero. This quaint town, renowned for its silver craftsmanship, is a striking example of a 'Pueblo Mgico' with its colonial charm, cobbled streets, and whitewashed houses nestled among the mountains. You'll have time to explore Taxco's beauty before we settle in for the evening.
Day 4 - Taxco - Chilpancingo - Acapulco
After breakfast, we will journey through the majestic mountains to Chilpancingo de los Bravo, the capital of Guerrero. This lively city is known for its vibrant spirit and its significance in Mexico's independence history. Accompanied by our guide, we will visit the regional museum, which showcases large murals depicting Mexico's rich history. Our adventure will continue to Acapulco, renowned for its stunning beaches and scenic landscapes. Upon our arrival, you will have time to unwind on the famous beach, lined with various eateries where you can savour lunch. In the afternoon, we will explore La Fortaleza, a 17th-century fortress constructed to defend the city against pirate raids (entry included). Following this, you will be transferred to your hotel, where you can enjoy some leisure time to relax.
Day 5 - Acapulco - Zihuatanejo
Following breakfast, we continue our journey along the stunning Pacific Coast, travelling a distance of 230 kilometres to reach Zihuatanejo. Known for its pristine beaches, laid-back atmosphere, and charming cobblestone streets, Zihuatanejo has preserved its unique character, originally as a quaint fishing village. Our plan includes a short, ten-minute boat ride to Playa Las Gatas, a secluded beach accessible only by sea. Here, you'll have the opportunity to swim, unwind, and enjoy lunch at one of the beachfront restaurants. After returning to the mainland by boat, it's time to settle into your accommodation and make the most of some free time to explore this delightful locale at your leisure. Please note, during peak seasons, accommodation in Zihuatanejo might be limited. If this is the case, we may opt to depart in the late afternoon, heading to the city of Lzaro Crdenas for the night.
Day 6 - Zihuatanejo - Janitzio - Patzcuaro
As we leave the arid landscapes behind, you'll notice the scenery transforming into the lush, green mountains of Michoacn. Our journey begins at Lake Ptzcuaro, where we embark on a tranquil 30-minute boat ride to the island of Janitzio. This island, home to the Purpecha community, is famous for maintaining its cultural traditions and the unique butterfly-net fishing method. Once on the island, you can enjoy a leisurely lunch at one of the local eateries, wander through the traditional streets, or, if you're feeling adventurous, climb to the top to visit the imposing statue of Jos Mara Morelos.After exploring Janitzio, we return by boat to Ptzcuaro, one of Mexico's most captivating colonial towns. With its rich pre-Hispanic heritage, stunning colonial architecture, and vibrant artisan markets, Ptzcuaro offers a charming atmosphere that is sure to leave a lasting impression.
Day 7 - Patzcuaro - Morelia - Cuitzeo del porvenir - Guadalajara
We'll set off for Morelia, the capital city of Michoacn, celebrated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its exquisite pink stone architecture and historical centre. Our visit includes key locations such as the Cathedral, Plaza de Armas, and the esteemed university founded in 1540. You'll have the opportunity to explore at your leisure and enjoy lunch. Our journey continues to Cuitzeo del Porvenir, located beside Mexicos second-largest lake. Here you might want to visit the Ex-Convent of Santa Mara Magdalena, notable for its 16th-century Plateresque architecture, and wander the towns historic cobblestone streets. The day will draw to a close in Guadalajara, the lively capital of Jalisco, famed as the birthplace of Mariachi music and Tequila. We anticipate arriving in the evening.
Day 8 - Guadalajara
In the morning, we explore Guadalajara, a vibrant city that harmoniously blends modernity with colonial charm. Our visit includes its historic centre, offering sights of the majestic cathedral and bustling market, as well as Tapata Square. A highlight of our tour is the Cabaas Hospice, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its impressive architecture. Following this, we journey to the town of Tequila. Here, we will tour the Mundo Cuervo distillery, gaining insight into the production of this iconic Mexican spirit, complete with a tasting session. After immersing ourselves in the culture and complexity of tequila-making, you will have time to explore the picturesque town of Tequila at your leisure, with opportunities for a pleasant lunch. We will then return to Guadalajara to conclude our day's adventures.
Day 9 - Guadalajara - Guanajuato
Today we journey to the state of Guanajuato, arriving around midday. In the afternoon, we will explore this stunning university city, recognised as a World Heritage Site. We'll take in the sights of its steep hillsides, narrow alleys, and historic churches. Our itinerary includes a scenic cable car ride, offering a breathtaking view from "El Ppila", a monument dedicated to a local hero of the Mexican War of Independence. This experience promises an unforgettable perspective of Guanajuato's unique charm.
Day 10 - Guanajuato - Dolores Hidalgo - San Miguel de Allende - Queretaro
Today, we begin our journey through the mountains to discover Dolores Hidalgo, the birthplace of Mexican independence. Here, we will take a moment to appreciate the town's historical significance. Our next destination is the Sanctuary of Atotonilco, renowned as the "Sanctuary of God and Country" and recognised as a World Heritage Site. While our visit may occasionally be restricted due to ongoing retreats, the sanctuary remains a spiritual highlight. We then move on to San Miguel de Allende, a captivating city with a World Heritage designation. Known for its exquisite colonial architecture and delightful cobblestone streets, San Miguel offers a charming atmosphere to explore at your leisure. Later in the day, our travels lead us to Queretaro, celebrated for its impressive colonial centre, vibrant Plaza de Armas, and inviting pedestrian streets lined with lively restaurants. This evening, take the opportunity to discover Queretaro's vibrant local culture.
Day 11 - Queretaro - Tula - Puebla
Our journey continues as we make our way to Tula, the historic epicentre of the Toltec civilisation. Here, we'll delve into the archaeological site, where admission is included. Dominating the scene are the towering Atlantean figuresimposing statues of warriors that reach heights of four metres. These impressive figures, along with the site's pyramids, palaces, and intricately carved columns, offer a glimpse into the sophisticated artistry and architectural prowess of this pre-Hispanic culture.Leaving Tula, we head towards Puebla, a city celebrated for its rich culinary heritage, striking colonial architecture, and renowned ceramics. We'll visit the city's breathtaking Renaissance cathedral and take in the atmosphere of its vibrant main square. Tonight, we stay in this lively city, allowing you the opportunity to explore its bustling environment and savour its local flavours.
Day 12 - Puebla - Oaxaca
We set off towards the state of Oaxaca, taking in the captivating landscapes of the mountains along the way. Our arrival in Oaxaca is expected by late morning, where you'll be treated to an included exploration of this UNESCO World Heritage city. Originally founded by the Aztecs, Oaxaca is renowned for its rich historical significance. The visit continues as we make our way to Monte Albn, a site perched 400 metres above the Oaxaca Valley. This ancient wonder, once a thriving Zapotec city, offers magnificent views and a fascinating history entrance tickets and a guided tour are included. After returning to Oaxaca, you'll have the remainder of the day to explore at your leisure, discovering the city's unique charm at your own pace.
Day 13 - Oaxaca - San Pablo Villa de Mitla - Tuxtla Gutirrez
We start our day with an early departure, briefly stopping in the charming Pueblo Mgico of San Pablo Villa de Mitla. Here, you'll have the opportunity to take a leisurely stroll near the 16th-century Church of San Pablo and explore the picturesque rustic streets. We then continue our journey through the stunning mountainous landscapes of Oaxaca, heading towards the Isthmus. Lunch is included en route. By late afternoon, we will arrive in Tuxtla Gutirrez, the capital of Chiapas.
Day 14 - Tuxtla Gutirrez - Sumidero Canyon - Chiapa de Corzo - Zinacantn - San Juan Chamula - San Cristobal de las Casas
Today, we embark on an unforgettable excursion starting with a captivating boat journey through the spectacular Sumidero Canyon. This remarkable natural wonder stretches nearly a kilometre deep and 14 kilometres long, offering breathtaking views throughout the voyage. Our next stop is in the charming town of Chiapa de Corzo, a place steeped in tradition and colonial charm, where you can enjoy a leisurely stroll. We delve deeper into the rich tapestry of Mayan culture by visiting the Tzotzil Indian villages, renowned for their vibrant traditions. In Zinacantn, you can admire the beautifully crafted dresses of local women and explore intricately adorned weaving workshops. In neighbouring San Juan Chamula, you will be intrigued by the unique church rituals that blend Christian and Pre-Columbian traditions. Our journey continues to San Cristbal de las Casas, a stunning colonial gem founded in 1528. The afternoon is yours to explore this beautiful city at your own pace, taking in its vibrant atmosphere and historic architecture.
Day 15 - San Cristobal de las Casas - Agua Azul - Misol-H - Palenque
Today, we journey through the beautiful mountains of Chiapas, exploring areas where communities continue to uphold their Mayan language and traditions. Our first stop is in Ocosingo, the regional capital. We then proceed to Agua Azul, where we include entry to the National Park. Here, a generous lunch awaits, and youll have time to wander or even take a dip among the more than 50 cascading waterfalls, ranging from three to 30 metres in height. Next, we visit Misol-H, where you can experience the thrill of walking behind its impressive waterfall. We continue our travels to Palenque, where dinner is included and accommodation awaits. Please be aware that roadblocks can sometimes occur in the Ocosingo region due to local social issues. If such events arise, we will take an alternative route visiting Villahermosa and the Yumk ecological reserve instead of the planned stops at Ocosingo, Agua Azul, and Misol-H.
Day 16 - Palenque - Campeche
On our journey today, we visit the awe-inspiring archaeological site of Palenque, a magnificent Mayan city nestled in the heart of the jungle. As we explore, we'll admire its beautifully preserved temples, pyramids, and the famous ball courtan unmissable glimpse into ancient civilisation, with admission and a guided tour included. Following our exploration, we make our way towards the Gulf of Mexico, crossing the state of Tabasco to reach Campeche. This picturesque port city is renowned for its charming colonial architecture and formidable 17th-century fortifications, originally built to fend off pirate incursions. Our evening concludes with an included dinner, allowing you to savour the flavours of this historic locale.
Day 17 - Campeche - Merida
Our journey today takes us to the state of Yucatn, arriving in Mrida after a relaxing two-hour drive. Once there, we will embark on a guided tour of Mrida, the vibrant capital known for its rich blend of colonial and Maya heritage. Key sights to explore include the fortified Cathedral of Mrida, the elegant limestone Church of the Third Order, and the historic House of Montejo, a magnificent example of Plateresque colonial architecture dating back to the 16th century. The afternoon is yours to discover more of the city's charm at your leisure; perhaps visit the fascinating Museum of the Maya World. In the evening, well provide a transfer to the Zcalo, where you can enjoy dinner and immerse yourself in the local culture and atmosphere.
Day 18 - Merida - Izamal - Chichen Itza - Rio Lagartos
Our journey takes us to some of the most captivating sites in the Yucatn state. In the enchanting town of Izamal, designated a "Magic Town," you'll discover why it's famed as one of Mexico's prettiest cities. Next, we visit Chichen Itza, where admission is included, to explore the most important and renowned relic of the Mayan civilisation, a World Heritage site. Here, you'll marvel at the iconic pyramid of Kukulcn and the Temple of Warriors. After enjoying a Mayan cuisine lunch, which is included, we continue to Ro Lagartos, a quaint fishing village nestled within a Biosphere Reserve. This will truly be a day rich in history and natural beauty.
Day 19 - Rio Lagartos - Cenote Choj Ha - Cancun
We start the day with a two-hour boat excursion through the Rio Lagartos Biosphere Reserve, where nature takes centre stage. As we glide through the mangroves, you'll spot crocodiles and a vibrant array of birdlife, including pelicans and the striking pink flamingos. Embrace the unique "mud experience" by applying clay rich in sulphur, minerals, and salts, which acts as a natural exfoliant, leaving your skin feeling refreshingly soft.Our journey continues to Valladolid, the third-largest city in the Yucatn, known for its charming historic centrea splendid spot to enjoy lunch in one of the delightful restaurants around the main square. In the afternoon, we make our way to Cenote Choj Ha. Managed by the local Mayan community, this site invites you to follow a short jungle trail to discover a dry cave before swimming in the spectacular lake located within a nearby wet cave.Finally, we head to Cancn, arriving late in the afternoon.
