Day 1 - Athens
Upon your arrival in Athens, we will arrange your transfer to the hotel, allowing you some time to settle in and explore your surroundings at your leisure. Spend your free time diving into the vibrant culture of this historic city, whether it's by wandering the winding streets or relaxing in a local caf. In the afternoon, youll find all necessary details about the start of your tour conveniently displayed on the boards at the hotel reception. As the day winds down, take in the dynamic atmosphere of Athens, setting the tone for the exciting journey ahead. Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2 - Athens - Athens - Rhodes Ferry
On our second day, we embark on a captivating panoramic tour of Athens. Our itinerary includes stops at the Presidential Mansion and the Panathenaic Stadium, renowned as the venue for the first modern Olympic Games. We'll also visit the National Library and explore bustling downtown squares, while observing the infrastructure developments that transformed the city for the 2004 Olympics. Our tour concludes near the iconic Acropolis, though admission is not included. In the afternoon, we'll transfer you to the Port of Piraeus, where you'll board an overnight ferry bound for Rhodes. The ferry is well-equipped, offering amenities comparable to those on a cruise ship. Accommodation will be provided in a comfortable double cabin, ensuring a restful night on board.
Day 3 - Athens - Rhodes Ferry - Rhodes - Marmaris
On the morning of our third day, we disembark the ferry in Rhodes and begin with a tour of the city, exploring its historic walled citadel and charming Old Town. This area boasts a rich tapestry of cultural influences from Greek, Roman, Byzantine, the Knights of St. John, Ottoman, and Italian heritages. In the afternoon, we'll depart Rhodes at around 4:00 p.m. on an express ferry bound for Turkey, a journey of approximately one hour. Upon arrival in Marmaris, a delightful coastal destination famed for its castle, marina, and fountains, we'll settle into our local accommodation and enjoy an included dinner. Please note that the ferry schedule between Rhodes and Marmaris is subject to frequent changes and may not operate daily outside the summer months, so adjustments to this part of the itinerary may be necessary.
Day 4 - Marmaris - Rhodes
On the fourth day of our journey, we will begin our morning with an express ferry ride back to Greece, expecting a crossing time of about one hour. Upon arrival in Rhodes, you will have time at your disposal to explore the island's rich cultural sights and local attractions. Please keep in mind that ferry schedules between Marmaris and Rhodes may vary, and services do not run daily except during the summer months. Should changes be necessary, we will adjust the itinerary accordingly to ensure a smooth experience.
Day 5 - Rhodes - Heraklion
On day five, we set out from Rhodes city to explore more of this captivating island. Our first destination is Filerimos, perched atop a hill, offering a chance to visit its monastery nestled within breathtaking landscapes. From there, we head to Lindos, where we can discover the impressive fortress and Acropolis, both offering stunning sea vistas. You may choose to wander through the charming, whitewashed streets, relax on a sunlit beach, or take the traditional route by opting for a donkey ride up to the Acropolis. After lunch, we return to Rhodes city, giving you some free time in the afternoon to explore at your own pace. As evening falls, we will transfer you to the airport for a flight to Crete. Upon arrival in Heraklion, we'll ensure a smooth transfer to your hotel. Do keep in mind that flights between Rhodes and Crete can be sporadic and sometimes require a stopover in Athens.
Day 6 - Heraklion
Our day begins with a scenic drive westward along the coast from Heraklion. Our first stop is the charming city of Rethymno, renowned for its Venetian heritage and its striking medieval castle. This picturesque coastal location offers a glimpse into Cretes intricate past. From here, we travel onward to Chania. Nestled against a backdrop of splendid architecture and rich history, this enchanting city is home to a formidable fortress and grand mansionsan exquisite blend of Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Venetian, Genovese, Turkish, Egyptian, and Greek influences. By the end of the day, we return to Heraklion, enriched by the diverse historical narratives and stunning vistas weve encountered.
Day 7 - Heraklion
Today, we will embark on an enriching excursion to the Palace of Knossos, providing a captivating insight into the Minoan culture that laid the foundations for Greek civilisation 4,000 years ago. Admission and a guided tour are included, allowing you to explore this remarkable archaeological site in depth. Following our visit, well traverse the island's impressive mountains as we head south to the scenic shores of the Libyan Sea, arriving at Agia Galini. This charming town enchants with its winding streets, a quaint fishing port, and bustling taverns where you'll have time to enjoy lunch. If you're in the mood, take a refreshing swim in the inviting sea waters. We will return to Heraklion in the evening. Please note that from November to April, due to the end of the summer season and potential business closures, our visit will be to the picturesque town of Matala instead. Matala is renowned for its beautiful beach and unique cliff landscapes adorned with carved caves.
Day 8 - Heraklion
Today, we will explore the eastern coast of Crete. Our day begins with a visit to the charming village of Kritsa, where we will discover Panagia Kera, a 13th-century church famed for its stunning frescoes, with admission included. Following this, we'll make our way to Agios Nikolaos, a picturesque town known for its pretty natural harbour. Here, you will have the opportunity to wander through the town and enjoy lunch at your leisure. In the afternoon, we proceed to Elounda, once a city-state, now a beautiful holiday destination. From Elounda, we will embark on a boat trip to Spinalonga Island to explore its storied Venetian fortress, which later served as a leper colony. After our visit, we will return by boat and travel back to Heraklion for our overnight stay.
Day 9 - Heraklion - Santorini - Athens
In the early hours of the morning, we'll head to the port to catch a high-speed ferry to Santorini, arriving between 9:00 and 10:00 a.m. Once on the island, we'll take a scenic bus ride through breathtaking landscapes to Oia, renowned as the most stunning town on Santorini, with its striking white streets, picturesque cliffs, castle remnants, and iconic windmills. You'll have the opportunity to enjoy lunch and leisurely explore the area. Later, we'll make our way to Fira, the island's capital. If you wish, you can descend to the port by cable car or donkey to admire the view of the cruise ships resting in the bay. As the day progresses, we'll return to the port to board a high-speed ferry, set to depart at approximately 3:15 p.m. Our expected arrival time in Athens is around midnight. Important Note: Please be aware that from November to mid-April, the high-speed ferry service between Heraklion and Santorini is not operational. During these months, we will instead fly from Heraklion to Athens.
Day 10 - Athens - Kamena Vourla - Kalambaka
We set off early this morning, making our way north through Greece. Our first stop is Kamena Vourla, a delightful seaside town offering beautiful surroundingsa perfect spot to stretch our legs and soak in the scenery. Continuing our journey, we arrive at the historic Thermopylae Mountain Pass, where the legendary battle of 480 BC took place. This significant site offers a glimpse into Greece's rich history.Next, we head towards Kastraki, a charming village that provides panoramic views of the valley. You'll have some free time here to enjoy lunch and explore at your leisure. Our afternoon is dedicated to the awe-inspiring Meteora, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its monasteries perched on towering rock formations. We include entry to one of these remarkable monasteries, ensuring a memorable visit. As the day ends, we make our way to Kalambaka, where a satisfying dinner awaits.
Day 11 - Kalambaka - Thessaloniki - Melnik - Sandanski
We'll journey through northern Greece, soaking in the splendid mountain landscapes as we travel towards the Aegean Sea. Our day begins with a visit to Thessaloniki, Greece's second-largest city, where you'll have some time to explore and enjoy lunch. Following this, we'll continue across the border into Bulgaria, specifically the region of Bulgarian Macedonia. Here, we will visit Melnik, a charming town renowned for its beautiful setting and rich wine-making tradition. As our day nears its end, we'll arrive in Sandanskia delightful spa town famed for being the birthplace of Spartacuswhere we will stay for the night. Dinner is included.
Day 12 - Sandanski - Rila - Sofia
Today, we start by exploring the magnificent Rila Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site nestled within picturesque forested surroundings. Its imposing fortress-like architecture and rich history provide a fascinating glimpse into Bulgaria's cultural heritage. Following our visit, we continue to Sofia, aiming to arrive by late morning. After lunch, we embark on a guided tour of Bulgaria's capital. This tour will take us to key sights such as the impressive St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the elegant Russian Church, the Mosque, and several of Sofias iconic squares and avenues, which prominently feature Stalinist architectural influences. The afternoon allows for some personal exploration, where you can wander through the vibrant streets and experience the city's unique atmosphere at your own pace.
Day 13 - Sofia - Istanbul
After enjoying breakfast, we will arrange for your transfer to the airport for the included flight to Turkey. Departure times may vary. Upon arrival in Istanbul, a city that straddles Europe and Asia, we will provide transport to your hotel. The rest of the day is free for you to discover this vibrant city at your own pace. In the afternoon, you will receive detailed information about the next stage of your journey, either from our team or via information boards at the hotel reception.
Day 14 - Istanbul
Our day in Istanbul is set to be an enriching experience as we embark on a sightseeing tour of the city. Our adventure begins with a visit to the grand Sleymaniye Mosque, the largest mosque in Istanbul, which stands as a testament to the city's rich architectural heritage. We will then explore the ancient city walls and the scenic Golden Horn, a natural harbour that has played a significant role in the citys history. Continuing our journey, we will wander through the lively fishing district and admire the majestic exterior of Hagia Sophia. Included in our tour is a visit to the Topkapi Palace, once the epicentre of the Ottoman Empire, where we will stroll through its splendid courtyards and pavilions.In the afternoon, you'll have time to venture out into the city on your own, soaking up the unique atmosphere that bridges two continents. As evening approaches, we'll head to Taksim, Istanbuls bustling commercial hub. Here, you'll have the chance to enjoy dinner at one of the numerous restaurants and see the nostalgic old tram making its way through the district. You might also opt to explore the historic Galata Tower, which offers panoramic views of the city's enchanting skyline.
Day 15 - Istanbul
Today, we'll embark on a captivating boat journey along the Bosphorus Strait, a two-hour adventure on a private vessel exclusive to our group. This strait, a vital waterway separating Europe from Asia, offers a fascinating glimpse into the vibrant life of Istanbul's bustling marine landscape. As we glide along, you'll witness the elegant blend of traditional wooden houses and grand Ottoman architecture. Passing beneath the two iconic bridges connecting the two continents, you'll also admire several imperial palaces lining the shores. After this enriching experience, we'll return to central Istanbul, where you'll have the remainder of the day to explore at your leisure.
