Day 1 - Athens
Welcome to your tour in Athens! Upon arrival, we will provide a transfer to your hotel, allowing you some free time to settle in and start exploring the vibrant city. In the afternoon, be sure to check out the information boards located at the hotel reception, where you'll find important details about the start of your adventure. Enjoy your day in Athens a city steeped in rich history and culture. Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2 - Athens
We begin our day with an enlightening city tour of Athens guided by a local expert. This tour immerses us in the vital cultural and historical touchpoints of the city, including a visit to the Presidential Mansion and the renowned Panathenaic Stadium, site of the first modern Olympic Games. As we travel through Athens, we'll also pass by the esteemed National Library and the lively city centre squares, providing a snapshot of both the ancient and contemporary spirit of Greece. Our exploration extends to the modern neighbourhoods that emerged post-2004, post-Olympic Games, reflecting Athens dynamic evolution. The tour concludes at the iconic Acropolis, although the entrance fee is optional and not included in our journey. In the evening, well offer a transfer to the charming district of Plaka. Here, you have the opportunity to discover its appealing Greek tavernas and experience the rich folklore of Athens independently.
Day 3 - Athens - Tripoli - Olympia - Patras
On the third day of our journey, we set off towards the captivating region of the Peloponnese. Our first stop is the historic Corinth Canal, an engineering masterpiece from the late 1800s. We then venture through the scenic mountains to reach Tripoli, the capital of the Arcadia region. Here, we'll pause to explore Aeros Square, where the lively atmosphere is complemented by inviting cafes and delightful restaurants.Our travels continue to Olympia, the revered site of the first Olympic Games held in 776 BC. With the help of a knowledgeable local guide, we'll uncover its rich history and explore significant landmarks such as the Temple of Zeus, the Stadium, the Gymnasium, and the Arena. Next, we journey to Patras, Greece's third-largest city. This vibrant hub boasts a stunning medieval fortress and the country's largest cathedral, adjacent to the charming church of St. Andrewa respected pilgrimage site. As the day concludes, we gather to enjoy an included dinner, reflecting on the day's remarkable experiences.
Day 4 - Patras - Igoumenitsa - Igumenitsa - Brindisi Ferry - Brindisi
Following a hearty breakfast, we will travel across the impressive RioAntirrio Bridge, a remarkable suspension bridge connecting the Peloponnese to the Greek mainland. Our journey takes us through the captivating landscapes of Central Greece and Epirus. Upon reaching the port town of Igoumenitsa, you will have some time to enjoy a leisurely stroll and explore the local surroundings. At 2:00 p.m., we will board a modern ferry for a scenic crossing of the Ionian Sea, heading towards Italy. By the end of the day, around 9:00 p.m., we will arrive in Brindisi, where you will spend the night.
Day 5 - Brindisi - Alberobello - Matera - Naples
Today, we will explore two remarkable and authentic Italian towns. Our journey begins in Alberobello, renowned for its distinctive trulli houses. These conical stone structures, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offer a stunning example of traditional Italian rural architecture. From here, we continue to Matera in the Basilicata region. Matera is celebrated for its ancient historic centre and the Sassi di Materaa fascinating network of dwellings and buildings carved directly into the rock, considered one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited human settlements. Also designated a World Heritage Site, Matera's unique architecture offers a captivating glimpse into the past.Following an included lunch in Matera, we will traverse the picturesque mountain landscapes of Basilicata and Campania. Our day concludes with an evening arrival in Naples, where youll have some free time to explore the vibrant city at your leisure.
Day 6 - Naples - Capri - Sorrento - Salerno
In the morning, after breakfast, we will make our way to the port of Naples to catch a ferry to the enchanting Island of Capri. Once there, you might choose to take the funicular up to Capri town, where you can explore at your own pace and marvel at the breathtaking views. Following lunch, we'll return to the mainland and travel onward to Sorrento. This delightful tourist town, nestled into the base of a cliff, offers you the perfect setting for a leisurely wander. Our journey will then take us to the Gulf of Salerno, where we'll arrive in the vibrant city of Salerno for an overnight stay.
Day 7 - Salerno - Paola - Mesina - Taormina
As we venture further south, we are greeted by the breathtaking landscapes of southern Italy, traversing the Cilento National Park's scenic splendour. Our journey brings us to Paola, a picturesque town perched on the Tyrrhenian Sea's edge. Here, we visit the Sanctuary of St. Francis of Paola, a site steeped in religious significance, before enjoying some free time to wander through the quaint historic centre for lunch. Our travels then take us to Villa San Giovanni, where a brief ferry ride transports us to Sicily. Upon reaching Messina, you will have the opportunity to explore its renowned cathedral before we continue to Taormina, a charming Sicilian locale. This evening, dinner is included, allowing you to savour the local flavours. Please note, accommodation is typically arranged in the Taormina region, though on certain occasions, it may be provided in Messina.
Day 8 - Taormina - Caltagirone - Villa Romana del Casale - Palermo
At the foot of the majestic Mount Etna lies Taormina, a city once hailed by Churchill as among the most beautiful on earth. Youll have the opportunity to explore its charming old town, where the ancient Greek theatre stands against a stunning backdrop of natural scenery. Our journey then takes us to the heart of the island and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Caltagirone. Known for its striking Baroque architecture, you'll enjoy a ride on a quaint tourist train, providing insights into the citys numerous landmarks. As Sicily's pottery capital, Caltagirone is a treasure trove of ceramic shops and workshops, most famously exemplified by its 142-step staircase, each uniquely adorned with vibrant tiles. After lunch, well visit Villa Romana del Casale with a local guide. This villa, another UNESCO World Heritage Site, stands out not only for its impressive 4th-century architecture but also for its exquisite mosaics that grace almost every room, showcasing some of the finest craftsmanship from the Roman Empire. Well cross the islands rugged interior en route to Palermo, where well arrive by the end of the day and share a delightful dinner.
Day 9 - Palermo
Today, we will set out on a guided city tour of Palermo with a knowledgeable local expert. Our itinerary highlights include visiting the cathedral, renowned for its stunning blend of architectural styles and the royal tombs within (admission included). We will also explore the Palazzo dei Normanni, a former royal palace that encompasses beautiful fountains, bustling markets, and serene gardens. Our tour extends to Monreale, where we will admire the remarkable cathedrala UNESCO World Heritage Site noted for its exquisite golden mosaics, which lavishly decorate the interior (admission included). The afternoon offers an opportunity for you to enjoy Palermo at your own pace and explore its vibrant charm independently. Please note that if you are part of a smaller group, the tour may be conducted as a regular excursion with local operators rather than as a private tour.
Day 10 - Palermo - Rome
On the tenth day of your adventure, you will be transferred from your hotel in Palermo to the airport for a domestic flight to Rome. This flight is included as part of your itinerary. Upon arrival in Rome, a transfer will be arranged to take you to your hotel, where you'll have time to settle in. Your guide will get in touch with you by the end of the afternoon. Alternatively, you can check the hotel reception for updates. Please note that the usual luggage allowance for domestic flights is one suitcase weighing up to 20 kg. Any excess luggage charges are the responsibility of the traveller and must be settled directly with the airline.
Day 11 - Rome
We begin our day in Rome with a captivating three-hour panoramic tour that blends a comfortable bus journey with an invigorating walk through the heart of Imperial Rome. Explore remarkable sites including the Arch of Constantine, the striking exterior of the Colosseum, and the expansive Imperial Forums. While on the bus, you'll pass by legendary sights such as the Circus Maximus, the grand Baths of Caracalla, the Basilica of Saint Mary Major, the distinctive Pyramid of Cestius, and the formidable Castel Sant'Angelo. Our tour will conclude around 11:00 a.m. at the historic Vatican City, where you can choose to delve deeper into its treasures with an optional visit to the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel. As evening falls, we'll head to the bustling Trastevere neighbourhood, famed for its enchanting little restaurants and vibrant atmosphere. We plan to return to the hotel around 8:30 p.m.
Day 12 - Rome
After breakfast, we will conclude our adventure, leaving you with cherished memories of your travels.
