Day 1 - Athens
Upon arriving in Athens, the bustling heart of Greece, we will ensure your smooth transfer to the hotel, where you can unwind and enjoy some free time. This moment of relaxation allows you to acclimatise and explore the hotels surroundings at your own pace. As the day progresses, detailed information regarding the start of your exciting journey will be conveniently displayed on boards at the hotel's reception area. This first day offers the perfect balance of leisure and preparation, setting the stage for the explorations to come. Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2 - Athens
On day two, we will embark on an enlightening tour of Athens led by a local guide. Our exploration includes prominent landmarks like the Presidential Mansion, the Panathenaic Stadiumthe birthplace of the modern Olympic Gamesand the National Library, alongside the lively squares in the heart of the city. We will also wander through the newer districts that sprouted up following the 2004 Olympic Games. Our excursion will culminate at the Acropolis, although entry is not included in the tour. In the evening, we'll whisk you away to the historical Plaka neighbourhood, known for its delightful Greek tavernas and cultural richness, offering a perfect opportunity to savour authentic folklore experiences.
Day 3 - Athens - Kamena Vourla - Kalambaka
On the morning of our third day, well set off early from Athens and head north towards the enchanting landscapes of northern Greece. Our first stop will be the charming coastal town of Kamena Vourla, where well take in the stunning seaside views. Continuing our journey, well visit the Thermopylae Mountain Pass, the historic site of the famous battle where a small Greek force faced a much larger Persian army. Midday, well arrive in the picturesque village of Kastraki, nestled amidst breathtaking scenery, where youll have free time to enjoy lunch at your leisure. Our afternoon will be dedicated to exploring the magnificent region of Meteora, known for its distinctive rock pillars and ancient monasteries perched atop them. Here, we will have the opportunity to visit one of these UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Our day concludes in Kalambaka, where we'll gather for an included dinner.
Day 4 - Kalambaka - Thessaloniki - Melnik - Sandanski
Today, we set off to explore the captivating landscapes of northern Greece as we journey towards the Aegean Sea. Our first stop is in Thessaloniki, Greece's vibrant second-largest city, where you'll have the chance to wander through its bustling streets and savour a delicious lunch. After enjoying Thessaloniki, we continue our adventure by crossing into Bulgaria, entering the Macedonian region. Here, we visit Melnik, a charming town known for its picturesque scenery and renowned wine production. Our day's journey concludes in the spa town of Sandanski, famously believed to be the birthplace of the historical figure Spartacus. Dinner is included, and we will spend the night in this delightful town.
Day 5 - Sandanski - Rila - Sofia
Today begins with a visit to the breathtaking Rila Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site nestled amid enchanting forested mountains. Revered for its fortress-like structure, this spiritual haven offers a glimpse into Bulgaria's rich monastic tradition. After our visit, we continue our journey to Sofia, the Bulgarian capital, arriving by late morning. Following lunch, join us for a guided tour of the city, featuring notable sights such as the impressive St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the Russian Church, and the city's iconic mosque. As we stroll through Sofia's squares and avenues, you'll observe the distinctive Stalinist architecture that characterises much of the city centre. Afterwards, you'll have free time to delve deeper into Sofia's vibrant culture at your own pace.
Day 6 - Sofia - Istanbul
Following breakfast, we will transfer you to the airport for a scheduled flight to Turkey (included; departure times may vary). Upon arrival in Istanbul, we will arrange a transfer to your hotel. The rest of the day is free for you to spend as you wish, discovering the vibrant culture and atmosphere of this historic city. In the afternoon, you can collect more information about the next stages of your journey either from our team or from the information boards at the hotel reception.
Day 7 - Istanbul
Today, we embark on an exciting exploration of Istanbul. Our day begins with a visit to the impressive Sleymaniye Mosque, the largest mosque in the city, where we'll also take in the surrounding historical walls and enjoy views of the Golden Horn and the vibrant fishing district. We'll then admire the exterior grandeur of the iconic Hagia Sophia, one of Turkey's most treasured landmarks. Our itinerary includes a visit to the Topkapi Palace, the former epicentre of the Ottoman Empire, where you can explore its magnificent courtyards and pavilions. In the afternoon, take advantage of some free time to continue discovering this captivating city that bridges two continents. As the day winds down, we'll head to Taksim, Istanbul's bustling centre of commerce and culture. Here, you can enjoy dinner in one of its numerous eateries and perhaps catch a glimpse of the nostalgic tram trundling through the district. Alternatively, you might prefer to visit the nearby Galata Tower for panoramic views of the city.
Day 8 - Istanbul
Today, we'll embark on an enchanting two-hour boat journey on the Bosphorus, with tickets included. This private cruise will not only provide captivating views of Istanbul's vibrant maritime life but also geographically highlight the city's unique position straddling Europe and Asia. As we glide past impressive sights, youll see splendid Sultans palaces, traditional wooden homes, and remarkable examples of Ottoman architecture. We'll also sail beneath the bridges that seamlessly connect two continents. After our return to central Istanbul, the afternoon is free for you to explore the city further at your own pace.
Day 9 - Istanbul - Ephesus - Kusadasi
Today, we set off early from Istanbul, continuing our journey across Turkey. By midday, we'll arrive in Ephesus, an ancient city remarkably well-preserved and once home to a quarter of a million people. During our visit, we'll explore the Basilica of St. John and the House of the Virgin Mary before delving into the archaeological site, where entry is included. After experiencing the rich tapestry of history at Ephesus, we will head to Kusadasi. Known for its lively atmosphere, vibrant trade, and charming castle, Kusadasi offers a welcoming coastal allure. Our night will be spent here, complete with dinner. Should you be travelling during the busy season from May to October, accommodation will shift to Aydin. In this case, after our discovery of Ephesus, we'll pause in Kusadasi from 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., with a panoramic city tour included, before continuing on to Aydin.
Day 10 - Kusadasi - Bodrum - Marmaris
Well leave early this morning to experience one of Turkey's remarkable natural attractions, Lake Bafa. Take a moment to soak in the tranquil beauty of this serene setting. Our adventure then takes us to Bodrum, a captivating fortified city with its roots in Greek history. Here, you can explore the impressive castle, meander through the bustling streets filled with tourists, or visit the charming marina. Following a leisurely afternoon, we'll continue our journey to Marmaris, a delightful coastal destination known for its castle, lively pier, and elegant fountains. Dinner will be provided. Please note that during the summer months, our accommodation may shift to the nearby town of Mugla instead of Marmaris.
Day 11 - Marmaris - Rhodes
Well depart early in the morning from Marmaris and take the express ferry to Rhodes, Greece, a journey that takes approximately an hour. Upon arrival, well go through the usual border procedures before we set out to explore the stunning walled city of Rhodes and its historic quarter. This area showcases a fascinating blend of cultural influences, including Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Knights of St. John, Ottoman, and Italian. In the afternoon, youll have time to discover the island at your own pace. Note that the ferry service between Marmaris and Rhodes is subject to frequent changes and doesnt operate daily outside of the summer months, which might necessitate some adjustments to this part of our itinerary.
Day 12 - Rhodes - Rhodes - Athens Ferry
Today, we will embark on an insightful journey across the alluring island of Rhodes. Our day begins with a visit to Filerimos, perched on a hilltop and home to a beautiful monastery surrounded by stunning landscapes. From there, we continue to Lindos, where you can marvel at its ancient fortress and Acropolis, both of which offer breathtaking panoramas of the sea. While in Lindos, you are free to wander its picturesque, whitewashed alleys, unwind on one of its inviting beaches, or experience a traditional donkey ride to the Acropolis. Later, we will reunite at the port of Rhodes to board a ferry for an overnight sail to Athens.
Day 13 - Rhodes - Athens Ferry - Athens
At 6:30 in the morning, we will arrive at Lavrio Port, marking the conclusion of our incredible journey. This is your opportunity to reflect on the remarkable experiences you've had and the memories you've created. Please note, if you're travelling by ferry from Rhodes, you will arrive at Piraeus. Should you wish to extend your stay in Athens, please be aware that transfers from the port to your accommodation are not included and will incur an additional charge.
