Day 1 - Athens
Welcome to your journey through Athens! Upon your arrival, we will arrange your transfer to the hotel, where you can settle in and unwind. Youll have some free time at your disposal to explore or simply relax. Later in the afternoon, be sure to check the boards in the hotel reception area for important information regarding the start of your adventure. Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2 - Athens
Today, we will embark on an exploration of Athens with a knowledgeable local guide. Our city tour includes fascinating landmarks such as the impressive Presidential Mansion and the historic Panathenaic Stadium, the site of the first modern Olympic Games. We'll also visit the National Library and pass through the lively city centre with its bustling squares. In addition, we'll see some of the newer districts that blossomed after the 2004 Olympic Games. The tour culminates at the iconic Acropolis please note that admission is not included. In the evening, a transfer will take us to the charming Plaka neighbourhood, where you can enjoy the welcoming atmosphere of its traditional Greek tavernas and soak up the local folklore. Enjoy this opportunity to experience the rich culture of Athens at your own pace.
Day 3 - Athens - Kamena Vourla - Kalambaka
We will set off early in the morning, heading north through Greece. Our first stop is Kamena Vourla, a delightful seaside town noted for its scenic surroundings. Continuing our journey, we will pause at the Thermopylae Mountain Pass, the historic site where the legendary battle took place. Next, we will visit Kastraki, a charming village offering stunning valley views. Here, you'll have the opportunity to enjoy lunch at your leisure. Following lunch, we will explore the Meteora, a breathtaking UNESCO World Heritage Site featuring remarkable monasteries perched on sandstone pillars. Admission to one of these famous monasteries is included. Our day concludes with dinner in Kalambaka.
Day 4 - Kalambaka - Thessaloniki - Melnik - Sandanski
As we journey through northern Greece, you'll enjoy the breathtaking mountain vistas as we make our way to the Aegean Sea. Our first destination is Thessaloniki, Greece's second-largest city, where you'll have time to explore and enjoy lunch amidst its vibrant setting. Following this, we'll continue onward to Bulgaria, crossing into the region of Bulgarian Macedonia. Here, we'll visit the charming town of Melnik, renowned for its striking landscapes and esteemed local wines. Our day will conclude in Sandanski, a delightful spa town with historical ties to Spartacus. We'll spend the night here, with dinner included to wrap up a day full of cultural discoveries.
Day 5 - Sandanski - Rila - Sofia
We shall begin our day by visiting the magnificent Rila Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its fortress-like structure and serene forest surroundings. This will offer you a glimpse into Bulgarias rich monastic history. Our journey will continue to Sofia, the capital city, where we anticipate arriving by late morning. After a relaxing lunch, we will embark on a guided tour to discover Sofia's architectural gems, which include the majestic St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the elegant Russian Church, the Mosque, and a stroll through the city's squares and avenues that display classic Stalinist architecture. Once the tour concludes, you will have the afternoon to wander through Sofia at your own pace and delve into its vibrant cultural scene.
Day 6 - Sofia - Bachkovo - Plovdiv
On the morning of Day 6, we will set off to explore Bachkovo Monastery, Bulgaria's second-largest monastery, founded in the 11th century. Known for its tranquil ambience, the monastery features three churches and offers a serene retreat. After our visit, we'll head to Plovdiv, one of Europe's oldest cities, where lunch is included. In Plovdiv, we'll embark on a city tour that grants us access to the Roman Amphitheatre, the Old Pharmacy, and the Armenian House, enriched by the city's rich historical backdrop.
Day 7 - Plovdiv - Kazanlak - Shipka - Etar - Arbanasi - Veliko Tarnovo
Today's adventure unfolds amid the spectacular landscapes of the Balkan Mountains. We travel through the enchanting Rose Valley to Kazanlak, where entry is included to marvel at the replica of the UNESCO-listed Thracian Tomb of Kazanlak. You'll also discover the region's renowned rose product crafting. Navigating through the mountains, we pause at the Shipka Memorial Church, a poignant tribute to the Russo-Turkish War. Our journey continues to Etar, a quaint village that's a living ethnographic museum. After an included lunch, we'll make our way to Arbanasi. Known for its fortress-like residences, this historic trading town invites exploration of its Nativity Church, with admission provided. The day concludes in Veliko Tarnovo, a city that once held the title of Bulgaria's capital, noted for its picturesque medieval core nestled by a breathtaking canyon. Please note that on occasion, our visit to Arbanasi may be scheduled for Sunday morning.
Day 8 - Veliko Tarnovo - Basarbovo - Bucharest
We set off for Romania, pausing en route to explore the Basarbovski Monastery, a spiritual retreat uniquely carved into rock. Crossing the border and over the Danube, we find ourselves in Bucharest by early afternoon. Here, we'll embark on a panoramic tour of Romania's capital, taking in the historic centre and the grand Palace of Parliament, one of the largest administrative buildings in the world. Afterward, you'll have some free time to discover the city at your own pace. Later, we'll gather for an included dinner.
Day 9 - Bucharest - Sinaia - Bran - Sighisoara
Today, we embark on a journey through the captivating landscapes of Transylvania. Our route takes us across the Carpathian Mountains, offering breathtaking views as we pass through lush, forested areas. After crossing into the region, we arrive in Sinaia, where we will enjoy a leisurely walk through the elegant gardens of the Peles and Pelisor Castles.Our next destination is the iconic Bran Fortress, famously referred to as Dracula's Castle, dating back to the 14th century tickets for this historic landmark are included. Following this, you'll have some time to savour lunch at your own pace. Continuing our adventure, we make our way to the enchanting medieval town of Sighisoara, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its picturesque medieval architecture. In the evening, we will dine at Count Dracula's restaurant, which holds the intriguing distinction of being the birthplace of Vlad the Impaler.
Day 10 - Sighisoara - Biertan - Sibiu - Hunedoara - Timisoara
Our exploration of Transylvania begins with a visit to one of the regions UNESCO-listed fortified churches in Biertan, which offers insight into the area's rich German heritage. Following this historical encounter, we head to Sibiu, an influential economic and cultural hub that once held the title of Transylvania's capital. In Sibiu, you will have the opportunity to meander through the vibrant narrow lanes and bustling squares while enjoying lunch at your leisure. The afternoon sees us visiting the majestic Hunedoara Castle, considered Romania's most beautiful, with tickets included in our adventure. We then proceed to Timisoara, where you can explore the citys sophisticated central squares at your own pace.
Day 11 - Timisoara - Belgrade
As we leave Timisoara behind, our journey takes us across the border into Serbia, culminating in a three-hour drive to the vibrant capital city of Belgrade. Situated at the convergence of the Danube and the Sava rivers, Belgrade offers a delightful blend of historical and contemporary allure. Our panoramic city tour includes stops at the impressive parliament building, a walk through the bustling city centre, and a visit to the historic Kalemegdan Fortress, offering intriguing insights into the city's past. Additionally, we will visit the Museum of Yugoslavia, where you can pay respects at Tito's Mausoleum. The afternoon is yours to explore at your leisure, whether wandering through the city's lively streets or discovering hidden gems in Serbias dynamic capital.
Day 12 - Belgrade - Sremska Mitrovica - Zvornik - Sarajevo
Today, we set off through the picturesque Vojvodina region, beginning with a visit to Sremska Mitrovica. This charming city, situated on the banks of the Sava River, boasts a rich historical centre. Once a pivotal city in the Roman Empire, it served as the capital of the province of Pannonia. Our exploration includes a visit to the grounds of the Imperial Palace of Sirmium, where we delve into the city's fascinating past. We then make our way to Bosnia, stopping in Zvornik, one of the region's oldest cities nestled along a river that marks the border with Serbia. Zvornik's history is a poignant reminder of the Bosnian War, during which the area experienced significant population movements. Situated near Srebrenica, the site of a tragic massacre, it is a place of somber reflection. You'll have time to enjoy lunch and take a leisurely walk here. Our journey continues through stunning landscapes, culminating in an evening arrival in Sarajevo. In the historic heart of the city, you can wander through the captivating bazaar, known for its vibrant Ottoman heritage and traditional crafts. Dinner is included in the evening.
Day 13 - Sarajevo - Mostar - Kravica - Dubrovnik
In the morning, we will embark on a captivating guided tour of Sarajevo, often referred to as the "Jerusalem of Europe" due to its unique blend of religious communities. As we stroll through the city, you'll witness mosques, churches, and synagogues that illustrate its rich cultural tapestry. Our exploration of the old town will highlight its strong Ottoman influence, featuring a stunning mosque over 500 years old and an impressive fountain. After our visit, we continue through picturesque landscapes to Mostar, where you'll find an enchanting historic centre and the iconic stone bridge that divides the Orthodox, Muslim, and Catholic communities. You'll have time to savour lunch and wander the city's charming streets. Our journey then proceeds to Croatia, though please note that border procedures may take some time. We'll reach Dubrovnik by the evening, where dinner will be provided.
Day 14 - Dubrovnik
In the morning, we'll embark on a panoramic tour of Dubrovnik with a local guide, exploring one of Europe's most stunning cities. Perched on a cliff and encircled by ancient walls, Dubrovnik is a gem of world architectural heritage, embraced by the Adriatic Sea. Well enjoy breathtaking views from a scenic vantage point along the road. Our tour includes visits to the Franciscan Monastery, featuring Europes oldest pharmacy, and the Assumption Cathedral. A boat trip will take us to Lokrum, a nearby island just 15 minutes away, where well visit the ruins of a Benedictine monastery dating back to the eleventh century. This island is also notable as a filming location for the Game of Thrones series. Afterward, you'll have free time to explore the city at your own pace before returning to the hotel in the late afternoon. Dinner is included. Please note, on some occasions, accommodation may be in Cavtat, a coastal town close to Dubrovnik. Additionally, from November to March, there is no boat service to Lokrum, and therefore, the island will not be visited during these months.
Day 15 - Dubrovnik
After enjoying a hearty breakfast, our adventure concludes, and you will take with you wonderful memories that will linger long after your journey has ended.
