Day 1 - Beijing
Welcome to China! Upon your arrival in Beijing, we will whisk you away to your hotel for some relaxation after your journey. In the early evening, we'll venture out to Wangfujing Street, renowned for its bustling pedestrian atmosphere. With an array of shops and a diverse range of dining options, it's the perfect introduction to the city's vibrant life. Dinner is included, after which we'll return to the hotel to rest and recharge for the adventures ahead. Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2 - Beijing
Our second day in Beijing promises a thrilling adventure as we delve into the heart of China's capital. We'll start with a comprehensive tour of the city's most storied avenues, leading us first to the Great Chinese Imperial Palace, famously known as the Forbidden City. This awe-inspiring site, the largest architectural complex in China, served as the residence of 24 emperors over nearly five centuries. Next, we'll ascend Coal Hill in Jingshan Park, one of Beijing's best-preserved imperial gardens, to take in panoramic views of the Forbidden City, weather permitting.Following our exploration of Jingshan Park, we'll visit Tiananmen Square, among the world's largest public squares, offering a perfect vantage point to admire the Great National Theatre, colloquially known as the Beijing Opera House. We'll pause for an included lunch before continuing our journey to the tranquil Summer Palace, a former retreat of the Qing Dynasty celebrated for its magnificent gardens and peaceful lakes. Our afternoon will be devoted to experiencing traditional Beijing life, as we embark on a tricycle ride through the historic Hutong neighbourhoods. Here, well discover the citys cultural heritage, browse traditional shops, and tour a classic Siheyuanan authentic courtyard house that embodies Beijing's architectural charm. In the evening, we'll return to the hotel to rest and reflect on the day's wonders.Please note that due to heritage protection and safety regulations, access to the Forbidden City is limited, and visits cannot be guaranteed. In such cases, we will explore the esteemed Confucius Temple and the Lama Temple, pivotal landmarks in Chinese history and culture.
Day 3 - Beijing
Today, our adventure takes us to one of the world's most extraordinary landmarks the Great Wall of China, specifically the Mutianyu section. Here, centuries of history unfurl against a backdrop of dramatic mountain scenery. We'll ascend and descend via cable car, offering exceptional vistas of this remarkable monument.On our return to Beijing, well explore the vibrant 798 Art District, a former military factory repurposed as a lively centre of contemporary art, with numerous galleries, studios, and creative spaces showcasing China's modern artistic flair.Our day continues at the Temple of Heaven, a vast, sacred complex celebrated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Historically, this was where emperors came to pray for bountiful harvests, and the architecture alone is a testament to its cultural significance.After a day full of exploration, well pause for a relaxing foot massage. Following this, you have the opportunity to partake in a Tai Chi class a serene way to connect with traditional Chinese culture through its emphasis on balance and tranquillity.We conclude our time in Beijing with a dinner featuring lacquered duck, a culinary speciality leaving us with lasting memories.
Day 4 - Beijing - Nanjing
After breakfast, we will make our way to the train station to board one of China's high-speed trains. These remarkable trains travel at speeds of 300 km/h, allowing us to cover nearly 1,000 km in under four hours. Our destination is Nanjing, a bustling city with a population of eight million, often celebrated for its pleasant atmosphere. Upon arrival, you will be struck by the energy of this modern metropolis, renowned for its vibrant commercial life and rich history. Our visit will take us to Purple Mountain, where we will explore the magnificent Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum, a fitting tribute to the founding father of modern China. We'll also visit the charming Linggu Temple, a peaceful and historically significant Buddhist site nestled amidst lush greenery. Following these visits, you're free to explore Nanjing at your leisure and uncover more of its delights. We will spend the night in Nanjing.
Day 5 - Nanjing - Suzhou - Tongli - Shanghai
We set off for Suzhou, celebrated for its stunning classical gardens, which are recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Historically, Suzhou was renowned as the world's foremost silk producer and has long been synonymous with beauty and refinement. Our exploration includes a visit to the Garden of the Humble Administrator, Suzhou's largest and most renowned garden, where meandering pathways, serene ponds, and verdant landscapes form a masterpiece of traditional Chinese garden design. Afterwards, you have leisure time to wander Pingjiang Road, a charming historic street featuring canals, traditional teahouses, and artisanal shops. Lunch is part of today's journey. Our afternoon takes us to Tongli, a delightful water town with narrow canals, stone bridges, and traditional houses that capture the essence of ancient China. Enjoy a scenic boat ride through its tranquil waterways to soak in the town's timeless allure. Our day concludes as we travel to Shanghai, where we settle in for the night.
Day 6 - Shanghai
On our sixth day, we delve into the vibrant city of Shanghai, starting in Pudong, the city's bustling financial hub located across the Huangpu River. This district is famous for its striking skyline dominated by iconic skyscrapers like the Pearl Tower. Well enjoy a scenic ferry ride across the river, granting us breathtaking views of both the historic and modern faces of Shanghai. Our exploration continues as we meander through the heart of the Old City, where we'll visit Yuyuan Garden, a beautifully preserved private retreat from the Ming Dynasty. In this serene setting, you'll partake in a traditional tea ceremony, offering a taste of China's rich cultural heritage. Well then head to Xintiandi, a trendy area famed for its stylish boutiques, vibrant cafs, and lively atmosphere, where lunch will be provided. Our afternoon is spent in Tianzifang, navigating its maze of alleys filled with charming craft shops and art galleries. To conclude our day, well take a leisurely walk along The Bund, where grand colonial-era architecture speaks of European influence on the city. The afternoon and evening are yours to enjoy as you please, perhaps with a boat trip for an unforgettable view of Shanghai under the night sky.
Day 7 - Shanghai - Luoyang
Well begin our day with an early transfer to the train station to catch the high-speed train at 07:17 a.m., taking us on a journey of over five hours and 1,000 kilometres through some of Chinas most picturesque rural scenery before reaching Luoyang. Lunch will be provided. Our first stop in Luoyang will be the remarkable Longmen Buddhist Caves, a breathtaking archaeological site stretching over a kilometre along rocky river cliffs. Here, more than 100,000 Buddha statues and carvings, intricately sculpted into the stone, collectively form one of China's most impressive historical treasures. To fully appreciate the magnitude and beauty of this site, well embark on a scenic boat ride along the river. Later, we'll immerse ourselves in the vibrant atmosphere of Luoyangs ancient city, surrounded by its formidable walls and illuminated with traditional charm. The bustling streets offer a glimpse into the local way of life and are an ideal spot to soak up the historical ambience.
Day 8 - Luoyang - Longmen - Sanmexia - Xian
In the early morning, just outside of Luoyang, we will visit the White Horse Buddhist Monastery, a significant and sprawling centre for Buddhist learning that attracts scholars and practitioners from across the globe. Our journey then takes us to Sanmenxia, a city steeped in history. Here, you can admire the impressive Yellow River and explore the Baolun Temple, famed for its striking tall pagoda. We will also visit the renowned Guo Museum, among the finest in China, where you'll discover the ancient funeral carriages of the former State of Guo, offering a fascinating glimpse into the region's historical narrative. Lunch is included in our itinerary. As we travel eastwards, we'll pass by the sacred Mount Hua, celebrated for its towering peaks and spiritual significance. By late afternoon, we will reach Xian, where our day concludes.
Day 9 - Xian
Having arrived in Xian, the historic starting point of the ancient Silk Road, we'll begin our day by visiting the legendary Terracotta Army. This remarkable archaeological site reveals thousands of life-sized clay soldiers that have stood hidden for centuries, guarding the tomb of China's first emperor. After exploring this extraordinary discovery, well return to Xian to admire the Small Wild Goose Pagodaa serene Buddhist monument that has endured for over a thousand years. Our journey continues through the heart of the city, where we'll pass through the vibrant Muslim Quarter, visiting the Great Mosque, a place that beautifully represents the cultural and religious blend unique to Chinas history. Our itinerary includes a visit to the Drum Tower, where youll be treated to a brief performance of traditional Chinese music, featuring instruments that echo the rich musical heritage of the region. Once the formal programme concludes, you'll have free time to explore Xian at your leisure, allowing you to truly absorb the atmosphere of this captivating city.
Day 10 - Xian - Dunhuang
Today, we journey to Dunhuang, a city that was once a vital oasis on the ancient Silk Road, nestled in the Gobi Desert. After a flight included in your package, you'll be warmly greeted upon arrival and transferred to your hotel. Our adventure continues as we explore the expansive desert landscape, taking a memorable camel ride across the Singing Sand Dunes of Mingsha Shan. One of the day's highlights is visiting the Crescent Moon Spring, a unique crescent-shaped lake that has maintained its pristine beauty despite the surrounding sands. We will access this iconic site via an electric car, ensuring a comfortable journey amidst the breathtaking scenery. After this evocative desert experience, we return to Dunhuang for an overnight stay, promising a restful conclusion to an enchanting day.
Day 11 - Dunhuang - Turpan
Today, we begin our exploration with a visit to the stunning Mogao Caves, a fascinating network of grottoes carved into a mountainside. These caves, once home to up to 18 monasteries, represent a significant cultural treasure trove along the Silk Road. Well include lunch to ensure you have the energy to immerse yourself fully in the history and artistry of this site. In the afternoon, youll have the opportunity to attend the vibrant Youjian Dunhuang Show, a cultural performance that brings local traditions to life through music and dance. After the show, well transfer you to the station to catch the high-speed train to Turpan. The journey offers a swift and comfortable travel experience, with an estimated departure at 5:12 p.m. and arrival at 8:45 p.m. Turpan, nestled in the heart of the Turpan Depression, sits half a kilometre below sea level and is the lowest point in China. Once in Turpan, youll settle in for the night at your accommodation.
Day 12 - Turpan
Today, we delve into the ancient history of the Silk Road, starting with a visit to the Ancient City of Gaochang. Once a bustling hub of trade and culture, this site offers fascinating insights into life during its period of flourishing prominence. Next on our itinerary are the Astana Tombs, known for their well-preserved mummies and artefacts that paint a vivid picture of the past.Our exploration continues at the Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves. These remarkable rock-cut caves once formed part of a large monastery, showcasing intricate murals that depict Buddhas serene visage, reflecting the spiritual heritage of the region. We'll pause for lunch before heading to the Jiaohe Ruins, an impressive ancient city built entirely of adobe. It stood as a strategic stronghold on the Silk Road, and walking through its remnants, you can imagine the vibrant life it once hosted.We round off the day's adventures with a visit to the Flaming Mountains. These striking sandstone formations glow a fiery red under the sunlight, their dramatic landscape shaped over millennia by volcanic activity. After this memorable day, we return to Turpan, where we will spend the night.
Day 13 - Turpan - Urumqi
Today we start our adventures in Turpan with an exterior visit to the renowned Su Gong Ta Mosque, where you'll see the tallest minaret in China, the Emin Minaret, built during the Qing dynasty. We shall then head to a local vineyard, offering a taste of regional viticulture, before exploring the Karez irrigation system, an extraordinary feat of engineering integral to China's history. Afterward, we continue by bus to Daban District, where you'll have the chance to wander through its lively bazaars. Lunch is included as part of our journey. We then set off for Urumqi, where we'll explore the breathtaking salt lake and the vast expanse of wind farms, a major hub for wind energy production. Our day concludes with accommodation in Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang Province.
Day 14 - Urumqi
On day 14, we journey to the Tianchi Lake scenic area, more commonly known as Heavenly Lake. Nestled at an impressive altitude of approximately two thousand metres, this alpine lake is celebrated for its serene beauty and is a designated UNESCO Natural Heritage Site. We will provide lunch, allowing you to unwind amidst this picturesque setting. Later, we return to Urumqi to explore the Grand Bazaar, where the enduring essence of the Silk Road lingers in its bustling alleys and vibrant market stalls. We'll conclude the day with an overnight stay in Urumqi.
Day 15 - Urumqi
Following breakfast, we will arrange your transfer to the airport, marking the conclusion of our services. We hope this journey has left you with enduring memories of your time in China.
