Day 1 - Beijing
Welcome to China! Upon your arrival in Beijing, we will transfer you to your hotel to settle in. Early in the evening, we'll take you to Wangfujing Street, one of Beijing's most lively pedestrian avenues. Known for its vibrant atmosphere and abundant shops and eateries, its an ideal place to start getting acquainted with the city. Your evening includes dinner, after which well return you to your hotel, ready for the adventures that await. Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2 - Beijing
On our second day in Beijing, we have an exhilarating adventure planned, taking in the very essence of China's vibrant capital. Our full-day tour begins with a visit to the Great Chinese Imperial Palace, also known as the Forbidden City. This monumental architectural treasure served as the home for 24 emperors over the span of nearly 500 years and represents Chinese history at its most majestic.Our exploration continues as we head to Jingshan Park, where Coal Hill offers one of the best-preserved imperial gardens. Should the weather allow, we'll enjoy spectacular panoramic views over the Forbidden City from the hilltop. Next, we will wander through Tiananmen Square, one of the world's largest public squares, boasting views of the impressive Great National Theater, or Beijing Opera House.A delicious lunch is included in our itinerary before we set off to the Summer Palace, an exquisite imperial retreat of the Qing Dynasty, famed for its beautiful gardens and serene lakes. Later, we'll delve into the essence of traditional Beijing life with a tricycle ride through the historic Hutong neighbourhoods. This experience offers a unique perspective on the city's rich cultural heritage, traditional shops, and iconic Siheyuan courtyard houses, reflecting Beijing's architectural allure.We will conclude our day back at the hotel for a restful overnight stay. A note of importance: The Forbidden City has recently reduced its visitor capacity due to heritage protection measures and safety regulations. If we are unable to gain access, alternative visits to the Confucius Temple and the Lama Temple will be arranged, both sites revered for their cultural and historical significance in Chinese heritage.
Day 3 - Beijing
Today we embark on a journey to one of the most iconic landmarks in the world the Great Wall of China. We'll visit the Mutianyu section, a splendid segment of this awe-inspiring architectural marvel that boasts over 2,000 years of history. The Great Wall snakes through stunning mountainous landscapes, and we'll use a cable car to ascend and descend one of its most scenic parts, offering spectacular views that emphasise its majesty.Upon returning to Beijing, we'll explore the vibrant 798 Art District. Once a military factory, this area now thrives as a dynamic hub for contemporary art, filled with diverse galleries, studios, and creative spaces that inspire and engage.Our exploration continues with a visit to the Temple of Heaven, one of China's grandest sacred complexes and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here, emperors once held ceremonies to pray for bountiful harvests, showcasing the sites cultural and historical significance.To unwind after a day full of discoveries, we'll treat ourselves to a relaxing foot massage, followed by a Tai Chi class a perfect introduction to the balance and harmony found within traditional Chinese culture. Our day concludes with a sumptuous lacquered duck dinner, a celebrated local culinary tradition, offering a delightful farewell to our time in Beijing.
Day 4 - Beijing - Taian - Qufu
Following breakfast, we will make our way to the train station to board one of China's impressive high-speed trains. Travelling at a remarkable speed of 300 km/h, we will arrive in Taian in just two hours. Positioned at the base of Mount Taishan, this historic city is renowned as the most sacred mountain in China, drawing spiritual pilgrims for centuries. Our first destination is the Dai Temple, an awe-inspiring Taoist complex established in the 11th century, serving as the starting point of the ancient pilgrimage route to the summit. After an included lunch, we will take a cable car to the legendary "Gates of Heaven" on Mount Taishan. The final ascent requires a short hike up its steep staircase, accompanied by numerous devoted pilgrimsan experience imbued with history and spiritual significance.As the day draws to a close, we will continue our journey by coach to Qufu, the birthplace of Confucius, where we will prepare for the next leg of our adventure.
Day 5 - Qufu - Xuzhou
Today, we delve into Qufu, celebrated as the birthplace of Confucius, the eminent philosopher from the 5th century B.C. who founded Confucianism. Our exploration includes visiting the Confucius Mansion and the Confucius Temple, both of which are key to understanding his enduring influence on Chinese culture and thought. Afterwards, we journey onwards to Xuzhou, where lunch will be provided. In Xuzhou, our day continues with a visit to the remarkable underground Mausoleum of the Han Emperor. This intriguing archaeological site features a terracotta army, reminiscent of the famous soldiers found in Xi'an, though this collection is on a smaller scale. Before settling in for the night, we'll enjoy a scenic drive that takes us past the tranquil Lake Yunlong, a picturesque body of water in the city's heart. We will spend the night in Xuzhou, resting up for the adventures to come.
Day 6 - Xuzhou - Nanjing
Well set off from Xuzhou early in the morning, heading to Nanjing, a vibrant city renowned for its dynamic commercial life and a population of approximately eight million. Our arrival is scheduled around 12:30 p.m., just in time to explore the essence of this lively metropolis, steeped in rich historical heritage. Our exploration begins at Purple Mountain, where we'll visit the grand Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum a magnificent monument honouring the founding father of modern China. We'll also visit the picturesque Linggu Temple, a serene Buddhist site surrounded by lush landscapes that provide a tranquil escape from the city's hustle and bustle. Following these visits, you'll have the opportunity to explore Nanjing at your own pace, with free time to immerse yourself in the city's unique charm. An overnight stay in Nanjing is included, offering the perfect chance to unwind after a day of discovery.
Day 7 - Nanjing - Suzhou - Tongli - Shanghai
Our day begins as we depart for Suzhou, a city famed for its exquisite classical gardens. These gardens, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, embody the essence of Chinese landscape design. Our visit includes the Garden of the Humble Administrator, Suzhous largest and most renowned garden. Here, you can wander through its tranquil pathways, admire the peaceful ponds, and soak in the natural beauty and refined art of traditional Chinese landscaping.Following our garden visit, youll have free time to explore Suzhou's charming Pingjiang Road, a historic street embraced by canals and lined with traditional teahouses and artisan shops. Lunch is included today, offering a chance to savour local cuisine.In the afternoon, well travel to the enchanting water town of Tongli. Known for its network of narrow canals, ancient stone bridges, and traditional houses, Tongli presents a glimpse into the alluring charm of ancient China. Well enjoy a serene boat ride through its waterways, offering a unique perspective of the town's historical beauty.Our day concludes as we make our way to Shanghai for an overnight stay, preparing for the adventures that await in this vibrant metropolis.
Day 8 - Shanghai
Today's exploration of Shanghai promises an exciting blend of the city's contemporary and historic facets. We'll commence our tour in Pudong, the city's bustling financial district across the Huangpu River, famous for its towering skyscrapers, including the iconic Pearl Tower. A scenic ferry ride will take us across the Shanghai River, providing stunning views of the citys skyline, blending modern architectural marvels with traditional charm.Our next stop is the Old City, where we'll enjoy the tranquillity of Yuyuan Garden, a finely preserved private garden from the Ming Dynasty. Here, we will witness a traditional tea ceremony, a vital part of China's rich cultural heritage. Our journey continues to Xintiandi, one of Shanghai's trendiest areas, known for its stylish boutiques, lively cafs, and vibrant atmosphere. After lunch, we'll head to Tianzifang, an arts district renowned for its labyrinthine alleys filled with quirky craft shops and contemporary art galleries. We'll round off the day with a leisurely stroll along The Bund, lined with grand colonial-era buildings that trace the history of European trade in Shanghai. You will have the afternoon free to further explore or, if you wish, enjoy a night-time boat trip to see the citys dazzling lights from the watera truly unforgettable experience.
Day 9 - Shanghai - Luoyang
We begin our day with an early transfer to Shanghai's train station to board a high-speed train departing at 07:17 a.m. Our journey of over five hours covers 1,000 kilometres, providing us with the chance to admire the rolling landscapes and charming rural vistas that characterise the Chinese countryside. Upon arrival in Luoyang, we'll enjoy lunch before heading to the captivating Longmen Buddhist Caves. This remarkable archaeological site, stretching over a kilometre along the river's rocky cliffs, boasts more than 100,000 Buddha statues and carvings etched into the stone a true testament to ancient craftsmanship. To fully grasp the splendour of these historical wonders, we'll also take a scenic boat ride along the river, offering a unique perspective of the caves. Our journey will then take us to the heart of Luoyang, where we'll pass through the city's impressive ancient walls and soak in the lively ambience of its brightly lit streets, rich with traditional charm and bustling local activities.
Day 10 - Luoyang - Longmen - Sanmexia - Xian
In the early morning, just outside of Luoyang, we will explore the White Horse Buddhist Monastery, a significant centre of Buddhist scholarship that attracts academics and practitioners worldwide. Our journey then takes us to Sanmenxia, a city steeped in history. Here, we'll pause to appreciate the grandeur of the Yellow River and visit Baolun Temple, renowned for its striking tall pagoda. A visit to the acclaimed Guo Museum is also included, where we will see the ancient funeral carriages of the former State of Guo, providing an intriguing glimpse into the region's past. Lunch will be provided. Our afternoon travels will offer views of the sacred Mount Hua, celebrated for its dramatic peaks and spiritual importance. By late afternoon, we will arrive in Xian, concluding our day.
Day 11 - Xian
Today, we find ourselves in Xian, a captivating city steeped in history as the starting point of the ancient Silk Road. Our morning begins with a visit to the world-renowned Terracotta Army, an extraordinary archaeological site where thousands of life-sized clay soldiers have stood sentinel for centuries, guarding the tomb of Chinas first emperor. This remarkable site offers a powerful glimpse into ancient craftsmanship and the might of imperial China.Upon our return to the city, we explore the Small Wild Goose Pagoda, a magnificent Buddhist structure with over a millennium of history. This elegant pagoda has stood the test of time, offering a serene spot amidst the bustling city. Day 12 - Xian - Linfen - Wang Family Mansion - Pingyao
Today, we embark on a high-speed train journey from Xian to Linfen, a trip taking just under three hours. From Linfen, we continue by coach to the grand Wang Family Mansion. Spanning the late 17th to 19th centuries, this estate magnificently exemplifies traditional Chinese architecture with its vast courtyards and intricate carvings. After lunch, we proceed to the historic city of Pingyao, the best-preserved ancient town in China. Known for its intact city walls and well-preserved ancient buildings, Pingyao offers a unique glimpse into the country's rich heritage. We'll take time to wander through its atmospheric streets, where history thrives in every corner. Our visit includes access to all the temples, mansions, and fortress walls, allowing us to fully explore and appreciate the charm of this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Day 13 - Pingyao - Wutai
Today, we journey to Wutai Mountain, a place of profound spiritual significance in China. Nestled among verdant hills and dense forests, this sacred site is a central hub for Lamaism, steeped in the region's rich Buddhist traditions. Wutai Mountain boasts a thriving community of monks and features over 40 ancient monasteries, supplemented by many newer ones, all set in a peaceful and spiritually invigorating environment.With our guide, we will visit the Nanshan Temple, renowned for its serene beauty and historical importance. After our guided visit, youll have the opportunity to explore the lesser-known temples, where you can quietly observe the monks as they go about their daily practices. Dinner is included, rounding off a day steeped in cultural discovery.
Day 14 - Wutai - Yanmen Pass - Yingkxian - Hanging Temple - Datong
Following breakfast, we'll embark on a journey along a picturesque mountain road, showcasing breathtaking landscapes as we head towards Yanmen Pass, near the Mongolian border. At one of the mountain passes, we'll explore a hidden section of the Great Wall of China, offering us a serene walk away from the usual crowds. Here, we can truly appreciate the grandeur of this ancient marvel. Our adventure continues to Yingxian, a quaint village celebrated for its extraordinary wooden pagoda, an architectural gem. Lunch is included. In the afternoon, we'll marvel at the stunning Hanging Temple of Xuankong, an incredible edifice perched on the side of a cliff, seemingly floating in defiance of gravity. As the day draws to a close, we'll travel by coach to Datong. Once there, you'll have time to wander through its historic centre, admire the impressive ancient city walls, and absorb the restored ambience of this captivating city.
Day 15 - Datong - Jiming post - Beijing
In the morning, we'll set off for the Yungang Caves, a breathtaking showcase of 5th-century cave art and a true gem of China's cultural heritage. This UNESCO World Heritage Site comprises 252 caves filled with more than 51,000 meticulously carved Buddhist statues, offering an unparalleled visual feast and insight into ancient artistry. Our adventure continues to Jiming Post, a quaint village that captures the essence of historical China. Once serving as a rest stop for imperial couriers, this charming settlement provides a tranquil step back in time. By mid-afternoon, we'll make our way back to Beijing, arriving with ample time to reflect on the day's awe-inspiring experiences.
Day 16 - Beijing
As our adventure comes to a close, we'll enjoy a final breakfast together in Beijing. Reflect on the remarkable experiences and unforgettable memories gathered throughout our journey across China.
