Welcome to China! Upon your arrival in Shanghai, you'll be transferred to your hotel. Shanghai is a bustling metropolis with a population exceeding 15 million, renowned as China's largest commercial port and its most international city. Day 2 - Shanghai
Today, we delve into the dynamic city of Shanghai, exploring some of its most iconic sights. We'll start our day in Pudong, Shanghai's modern financial hub located across the Huangpu River, known for its impressive skyline dominated by towering skyscrapers like the iconic Pearl Tower. Our next adventure is a scenic ferry ride across the Shanghai River, offering us spectacular views that capture the essence of Shanghai's blend of history and modernity.Continuing our journey, we meander through the Old City and visit the tranquil Yuyuan Garden, a beautifully preserved private garden from the Ming Dynasty. Here, we'll partake in a traditional tea ceremonya cherished aspect of China's rich cultural heritage. Following our garden visit, we'll explore Xintiandi, a trendy district celebrated for its chic boutiques, cafs, and lively atmosphere, where we'll enjoy a leisurely lunch.Later, we'll wander through Tianzifang, an area renowned for its maze-like alleys filled with charming craft shops and contemporary art galleries. As the day wends to a close, we'll take a stroll along The Bund, where the grand colonial-era architecture mirrors the European influence in Shanghai's development. Day 3 - Shanghai - Luoyang
We begin our day with an early transfer to the train station for our high-speed journey from Shanghai to Luoyang, scheduled to depart at 07:17 a.m. Over the course of approximately five hours, well cover 1,000 kilometres, traversing picturesque countryside and passing through scenic landscapes. Upon arrival in Luoyang, lunch will be provided.Our first stop is the stunning Longmen Buddhist Caves, an impressive archaeological site stretching over a kilometre along the cliffs by the river. With more than 100,000 statues and carvings of Buddha, this site stands as a testament to ancient Chinese artistry and devotion. To further appreciate this remarkable location, well enjoy a relaxing boat ride along the river, offering a different perspective of the caves.Later, well transfer to Luoyang's historic city centre. Here, we will wander through the citys ancient walls and soak up the vibrant atmosphere of the bustling streets, rich with traditional Chinese charm and local life. These experiences promise to provide an unforgettable insight into the cultural heritage of China.
Day 4 - Luoyang - Longmen - Sanmexia - Xian
On the fourth day of our journey, we start our morning on the outskirts of Luoyang with a visit to the White Horse Buddhist Monastery. This vast and historic centre for Buddhist learning is renowned for welcoming scholars and practitioners from across the globe. We then proceed to Sanmenxia, a city rich in historical significance. Here, we take in the majestic Yellow River before exploring Baolun Temple, celebrated for its impressive tall pagoda. Our next stop is the Guo Museum, one of China's finest, where we'll encounter ancient funeral carriages from the former State of Guo, offering a captivating insight into the region's past. Lunch is provided as part of our itinerary. As we journey eastwards, we pass by sacred Mount Hua, famed for its dramatic peaks and spiritual importance. By the late afternoon, we arrive in the vibrant city of Xian, bringing our day to a close.
Day 5 - Xian
Today, we delve into the historical tapestry of Xian, a city renowned for marking the eastern terminus of the ancient Silk Road. Our morning is dedicated to exploring the breathtaking Terracotta Army. Revel in the sight of thousands of life-sized clay soldiers, crafted to guard the tomb of China's first emperor, a testament to ancient China's architectural prowess.Following this memorable encounter, we return to Xian to visit the Small Wild Goose Pagoda, an enduring Buddhist edifice that has graced the landscape for over a millennium. Beyond its religious significance, it offers insights into the citys long-standing spiritual heritage.After our pagoda visit, we will venture into Xians historic walled city centre, where well traverse the bustling Muslim Quarter. Here, the Great Mosque stands as a unique cultural fusion of Chinese and Islamic architectural influences, reflecting centuries of diverse cultural exchange in China.Before our formal activities draw to a close, well enter the Drum Tower. This ancient structure not only holds historical significance but also hosts an engaging traditional Chinese music performance, providing a sensory glimpse into the regions artistic legacy.Youll then have the afternoon free to meander through Xians vibrant streets, discovering its sights at your leisure.
Day 6 - Xian - Chengdu
Today, we'll depart Xian and board a modern high-speed train, travelling over 700 kilometres to Chengdu in just over three hours. Upon arrival, we'll visit the renowned Panda Research and Breeding Centre. This extraordinary reserve is home to 120 giant pandas and 76 red pandas, offering a unique glimpse into the lives of these endangered creatures. Lunch is included, and in the afternoon, we'll take a leisurely stroll through Peoples Park. Here, you can experience the local culture, witness people practising Tai Chi, and visit the traditional tea houses that dot the park's charming landscape.
Day 7 - Chengdu
Today, we'll embark on a full-day exploration of Sichuan Province, renowned for its stunning landscapes and traditional villages. Our first stop is Dujiangyan, where we'll marvel at the ancient irrigation system that has been operating for over 2,000 years. This engineering marvel is a designated World Heritage site. We then make our way to Qingcheng Shan, also known as the 'Mountain of the Green City', a revered Taoist holy mountain. As we meander through its forested paths, you'll encounter caves, pavilions, and centuries-old wooden temples. Lunch is included as part of our visit. In the afternoon, we'll explore Jiezi, an ancient city with alleys that boast a history spanning over a millennium. We conclude our journey with a return to Chengdu, reflecting on the rich history and natural beauty of the region.
Day 8 - Chengdu - Lhasa
We will board a flight to Lhasa from Chengdu, arriving at Gonggar Airport. Upon landing in the capital city of Tibet, located at an altitude of 3,700 metres, we will be met by our guide and taken by bus to our hotel in Lhasa. The journey from the airport to the city will take approximately an hour and a half. Once checked in, youll have the rest of the evening to yourself. Use this time to acclimatise to the altitude and perhaps take a leisurely walk around the local bazaars, soaking in the vibrant atmosphere and unique culture of this remarkable city.
Day 9 - Lhasa
After enjoying breakfast, we're set to explore one of Lhasas most iconic landmarks: the Potala Palace. This majestic 13-storey structure, once the tallest of its time, served as the winter residence of the Dalai Lamas. Renowned for its stunning architecture, the palace is visible from various points around the city and represents a significant historical relic from the 7th century AD. After our guided tour, lunch will be provided. In the afternoon, we'll visit Sera Monastery, established in 1419 by Sakya Yeshe, one of Tsongkhapa's disciples. Here, we'll witness the engaging "Debate on Buddhist Scriptures," a distinctive and age-old tradition unique to Sera. Our day concludes with a return to the hotel, where we'll stay overnight in Lhasa.
Day 10 - Lhasa
Today in Lhasa, we'll explore the revered Jokhang Temple, a pivotal spiritual site often hailed as Tibet's 'House of Buddha'. Home to an iconic statue said to be crafted by Buddha Sakyamuni himself, the temple is a convergence point for Tibetans from all over, reflecting the vibrant spiritual and communal life within its walls. Surrounding this sacred space is the bustling Barkhor Market, where you can immerse yourself in the local culture and find unique items that capture the essence of the region. Lunch will be provided to ensure youre refreshed for the afternoon's activities.Later, we'll visit Norbulingka, another significant cultural landmark that served as the Dalai Lama's summer residence. Here, you'll encounter beautiful gardens and historical buildings that tell tales of Tibet's rich history. After our visit, we will head back to the hotel for an overnight stay, giving you time to reflect on the day's experiences.
Day 11 - Lhasa - Beijing
Following a leisurely breakfast, we'll make our way to the airport for our flight to Beijing, the capital of the People's Republic of China. On arrival, a transfer to our hotel is arranged for you. As the day transitions into evening, we will have our first glimpse of this magnificent city with a visit to Wangfujing Street. Known for its vibrant pedestrian lanes, this bustling avenue is lined with a variety of shops and restaurants that reflect the city's dynamic atmosphere. Dinner is included, providing you with a taste of local flavours, before we return to the hotel, rounding off our initial encounter with Beijing.
Day 12 - Beijing
Today, we will delve into the heart of China's vibrant capital, Beijing, with a comprehensive day tour highlighting some of its most iconic landmarks. Our day begins with a visit to the Great Chinese Imperial Palacefamiliarly known as the Forbidden City. This spectacular architectural expanse served as the residence for 24 emperors over almost five centuries. Following this, we'll wander through Jingshan Park, renowned for Coal Hill, an immaculate imperial garden offering, weather permitting, stunning vistas over the Forbidden City.We continue our exploration with a walk through Tiananmen Square, one of the largest public squares globally. From here, we can admire the grandeur of the Great National Theater, also referred to as the Beijing Opera House. Our day includes lunch, after which we'll visit the Summer Palace. Once a serene imperial sanctuary for the Qing Dynasty, this retreat is famed for its enchanting gardens and tranquil lakes.In the afternoon, we immerse ourselves in traditional Beijing life and culture with a tricycle ride through the historic Hutong neighbourhoods. Day 13 - Beijing
Today, we delve into one of the world's most extraordinary wondersthe Great Wall of China, specifically at the Mutianyu section. Stretching over two millennia, this architectural marvel snakes through stunning mountain landscapes. We'll ascend and descend one of the wall's most picturesque stretches via cable car, granting us sweeping vistas of this legendary edifice.On our return journey to Beijing, we'll explore the vibrant 798 Art District. Formerly a military factory, this area has blossomed into a dynamic hub for contemporary art, brimming with galleries, studios, and creative spaces. Our exploration continues at the Temple of Heaven, an expansive UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of China's most revered sacred complexes, where emperors once prayed for bountiful harvests.To conclude this enriching day, well indulge in a relaxing foot massage, followed by a Tai Chi classa perfect introduction to the calming harmony of traditional Chinese culture. We'll cap off our Beijing visit with a lacquered duck dinner, a local delicacy renowned for its rich flavours, ensuring a memorable farewell to this extraordinary city.
Day 14 - Beijing - Nanjing
After breakfast, we will head to the train station to board one of Chinas cutting-edge high-speed trains. Travelling at a remarkable 300 km/h, we will cover nearly 1,000 km in less than four hours, reaching Nanjing, a lively city of eight million people, often celebrated as one of Chinas most pleasant urban environments. Nanjing, with its blend of vibrant commercial life and deep historical roots, promises an engaging day. Well begin our exploration at Purple Mountain, where well visit the impressive Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum, a splendid tribute to the father of modern China. Our journey will also take us to the Linggu Temple, a picturesque and significant Buddhist site nestled in verdant surroundings. After the organised tour, youll have the opportunity to wander through the city at your own leisure, immersing yourself in its compelling mix of the old and new. We'll spend the night in Nanjing.
Day 15 - Nanjing - Suzhou - Tongli - Shanghai
Today, we set off for Suzhou, a city famed for its classical gardens, which have earned UNESCO World Heritage status. Historically, Suzhou was not only the world leader in silk production but also a place synonymous with beauty and sophistication. We'll explore the Garden of the Humble Administrator, the citys largest and most renowned garden. Here, youll find an exquisite landscape of winding paths, calming ponds, and lush foliage that exemplify traditional Chinese garden artistry.Following this, you will have some free time to wander along Pingjiang Road. This charming historical street, lined with canals, traditional tea houses, and artisan shops, embodies the city's rich cultural heritage.After enjoying lunch, we continue to Tongli, a charming water town. With its narrow canals, ancient stone bridges, and traditional houses, Tongli offers a glimpse into the elegance of old China. Here, we'll indulge in a scenic boat ride through the peaceful waterways, allowing you to fully appreciate the town's timeless allure.Our day concludes as we make our way back to Shanghai, where we will check in for an overnight stay.
