Day 1 - Beijing
Upon your arrival in Beijing, you'll be warmly welcomed to China, and we'll arrange your transfer to the hotel for a comfortable start. As twilight approaches, we'll head out to the spirited Wangfujing Street. This bustling pedestrian avenue is famed for its vibrant atmosphere, offering a delightful mix of shops and restaurants to explore. It provides the perfect introduction to the city, allowing you to soak up the local culture and energy. After an engaging evening, we'll enjoy dinner before returning to the hotel. Please be aware that the tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, so group composition could alter during the journey, although the maximum group size will always remain within limits. Day 2 - Beijing
We'll spend an exhilarating day exploring the highlights of Beijing, the vibrant capital of China. Our full-day tour includes a visit to the Forbidden City, recognised as the most majestic architectural complex in China, where 24 emperors once ruled across nearly five centuries. We'll also explore Jingshan Park, home to Coal Hill, one of the best-preserved imperial gardens in Beijing. If the weather cooperates, you can enjoy stunning panoramic views of the Forbidden City from the hilltop. Our adventure continues with a stroll through Tiananmen Square, one of the largest public squares in the world, offering a chance to admire the Great National Theatre, also known as the Beijing Opera House. Lunch is included in todays itinerary.In the afternoon, well visit the Summer Palace, a serene retreat for Qing Dynasty emperors, famed for its exquisite gardens and tranquil lakes. Later, we'll venture into the traditional Hutong neighbourhoods on a tricycle ride, immersing ourselves in the rich cultural heritage of Beijing. Here, you can explore quaint shops and visit a classic Siheyuan, a traditional courtyard house reflecting the architectural charm of the city. Our day concludes with an overnight stay at the hotel. Please note: Due to heritage protection and safety regulations, entry to the Forbidden City is limited. If access is not possible, we will instead explore the Confucius Temple and the Lama Temple, both significant centres of Chinese history and culture.
Day 3 - Beijing
Today, we embark on a journey to one of the world's most iconic landmarks the Great Wall of China, visiting the Mutianyu section. This awe-inspiring structure, steeped in over 2,000 years of history, weaves through stunning mountain scenery. We will use a cable car to ascend and descend one of its most picturesque sections, providing breathtaking views of this monumental fortification.As we make our way back to Beijing, we'll stop at the bustling 798 Art District. Once a military factory, it has been transformed into a vibrant hub for contemporary art, filled with galleries, studios, and creative spaces.Next, we visit the Temple of Heaven, one of China's largest and most revered sacred complexes, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This magnificent architectural site was where emperors once prayed for prosperous harvests.After an eventful day, unwind with a soothing foot massage and enjoy a Tai Chi class. This offers a perfect opportunity to engage with the balance and harmony central to traditional Chinese culture. To round off our stay in Beijing, we'll indulge in a lacquered duck dinner, a local culinary tradition sure to leave a lasting impression.
Day 4 - Beijing - Taian - Qufu
Following breakfast, well head to the train station to board one of China's high-speed trains, travelling at an impressive 300 km/h. In just two hours, we will arrive in Taian, a city steeped in history nestled at the base of Mount Taishan. Recognised as the most sacred mountain in China, it has been a focal point for spiritual pilgrimages throughout the centuries. Our first visit will be to the Dai Temple, a magnificent Taoist complex with origins tracing back to the 11th century. This temple serves as the traditional starting point for the pilgrimage route to the mountains peak. Lunch will be provided. In the afternoon, experience the soaring vistas of Mount Taishan as we take a cable car up to the legendary "Gates of Heaven". From there, the final ascent to the summit is afoot, traversing the steep staircase amid hundreds of pilgrims, an experience rich with historical and spiritual significance. As the day concludes, well journey by bus to Qufu, the birthplace of Confucius, to continue our exploration.
Day 5 - Qufu - Xuzhou
Today, we delve into the heart of Qufu, celebrated as the birthplace of Confucius, the eminent philosopher of the 5th century B.C. and the founder of Confucianism. Our exploration takes us to the Confucius Mansion and the Confucius Temple, where we'll gain insights into his enduring legacy and its profound influence on Chinese culture. We then make our way to Xuzhou with lunch provided on this leg of the journey. In Xuzhou, we'll uncover the remarkable underground Mausoleum of the Han Emperor, an archaeological marvel. Within the museum, we'll be captivated by the terracotta army exhibit, reminiscent of the famed Xian warriors, albeit on a more intimate scale. Before we reach our hotel, we'll enjoy a scenic drive along the shores of Lake Yunlong, a picturesque gem in the heart of the city. Overnight accommodation will be provided in Xuzhou.
Day 6 - Xuzhou - Nanjing
We start our day early in Xuzhou and journey to the vibrant city of Nanjing, which is home to eight million people and is considered one of the most pleasant cities in China. By around 12:30 p.m., we arrive in this dynamic metropolis famed for its bustling commercial life and rich historical tapestry. Our excursion takes us to the scenic Purple Mountain, where we visit the esteemed Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum, a magnificent memorial to the founding father of modern China. Our exploration continues at the serene Linggu Temple, a Buddhist site of significant historical importance set amidst lush surroundings. Afterwards, you'll have the freedom to discover Nanjing at your leisure. Our day concludes with an overnight stay in Nanjing.
Day 7 - Nanjing - Suzhou - Tongli - Shanghai
Today we travel to Suzhou, a city famed for its enchanting classical gardens, which are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Once the leading silk producer globally, Suzhou has long been synonymous with elegance and beauty. Our visit includes entry to the Garden of the Humble Administrator, the largest and most renowned garden in the city. Here, winding paths, serene ponds, and lush foliage create a stunning example of traditional Chinese landscaping. Once we've explored the garden, you'll have some free time to wander through the quaint streets of Pingjiang Road. This historic street, set along tranquil canals, is lined with teahouses and artisan shops. Lunch is included today.In the afternoon, our journey continues to Tongli, a captivating water town where narrow canals, charming stone bridges and traditional houses create a scene reminiscent of ancient China. We will enjoy a scenic boat ride through the tranquil waterways, affording a unique perspective on the town's timeless allure. As the day draws to a close, we'll travel to Shanghai, where we'll settle in for the evening.
Day 8 - Shanghai
Our exploration of Shanghai will begin in Pudong, the city's bustling financial district across the Huangpu River, where modern skyscrapers, including the iconic Pearl Tower, form the skyline. From here, well embark on a scenic ferry ride across the river, providing breathtaking views of both the historic and modern facets of Shanghai. Next, we'll explore the Old City, where we'll visit the tranquil Yuyuan Garden, a finely preserved private garden from the Ming Dynasty. During our time here, well also enjoy a traditional tea ceremony, immersing ourselves in this enriching aspect of China's cultural heritage.Our journey continues in Xintiandi, a lively neighbourhood renowned for its chic boutiques and inviting cafs, where you'll feel the vibrant pulse of the city. Lunch will be provided as part of our tour. In the afternoon, well wander through Tianzifang, a former residential area now famed for its quaint alleyways, craft shops, and contemporary art galleries. We'll conclude our day with a walk along The Bund, where the grand colonial-era architecture offers a glimpse into the city's past connections with European trade. The afternoon is yours to explore at leisure; perhaps you might choose to cap off the day with an optional evening boat trip to admire the illuminated cityscapea truly unforgettable experience.
Day 9 - Shanghai - Luoyang
We will start our day early with a transfer to the train station to catch a high-speed train departing at 07:17 a.m. Over the course of about five hours, we will cover 1,000 km, journeying through picturesque landscapes and charming countryside before arriving in Luoyang. Lunch is included in today's plan.Our exploration begins at the Longmen Buddhist Caves, a breathtaking archaeological site stretching over a kilometre along the river's rocky cliffs. This remarkable complex features more than 100,000 Buddha statues and carvings carved into the stone, making it one of China's most extraordinary sites. To fully appreciate the site's grandeur, we will also take a scenic boat trip along the river.Afterwards, we'll make our way to the historic city of Luoyang. Here, we'll pass through its imposing city walls and experience the vibrant atmosphere of the illuminated streets, rich with history and local vitality.
Day 10 - Luoyang - Longmen - Sanmexia - Xian
In the early morning, we will explore the outskirts of Luoyang with a visit to the White Horse Buddhist Monastery. This historic site is a revered centre of Buddhist learning, drawing scholars and practitioners from around the globe. Our journey continues to Sanmenxia, a city steeped in history. Here, we'll visit the impressive Yellow River and explore the Baolun Temple, renowned for its striking tall pagoda. Our tour of Sanmenxia includes the acclaimed Guo Museum, one of China's finest, where you will encounter the ancient funeral carriages of the State of Guo, offering a fascinating glimpse into the past. Lunch is included in our day's itinerary.We then proceed eastward, passing the hallowed Mount Hua, celebrated for its dramatic peaks and spiritual significance in Chinese culture. Day 11 - Xian
After arriving in Xian, a city that marks the start of the ancient Silk Road, we begin our morning with a visit to the legendary Terracotta Army. This remarkable archaeological site houses thousands of life-sized clay soldiers, who have silently stood guard over the tomb of Chinas first emperor for centuries. Well then return to Xian to admire the Small Wild Goose Pagoda, a magnificent Buddhist structure that has endured the test of time for over a thousand years. Our exploration of Xian continues with a tour of the citys historic walled centre. Here, we delve into the vibrant Muslim Quarter, where well visit the Great Mosque, a unique architectural blend reflecting the rich tapestry of cultures and religions that have influenced China throughout the ages. Within our tour, we include an entrance to the Drum Tower, treating us to a brief performance of traditional Chinese music played on ancient instruments. Afterwards, you will have some free time to explore Xian at your own leisurely pace.
Day 12 - Xian - Chengdu
Leaving Xian aboard a modern high-speed train, we swiftly cover the 700 km distance to Chengdu in just over three hours. Upon arrival, our first stop is the renowned Panda Research and Breeding Centre. Here, you'll witness over 120 giant pandas and 76 red pandas in their natural habitat, a delightful encounter with these beloved creatures. We include lunch before continuing our exploration with a leisurely stroll through the Peoples Park. This vibrant space is a hub of local activity, featuring a picturesque lake, residents practicing Tai Chi, and traditional tea houses where you can relax and soak in the local culture.
Day 13 - Chengdu
Today, we embark on an enriching full-day tour of Sichuan Province, known for its captivating landscapes and traditional villages. Our journey begins in Dujiangyan, where we explore the remarkable ancient irrigation systema world heritage site that has been in operation for over 2,000 years, showcasing the ingenuity of ancient Chinese engineering.As we continue, we arrive at Qingcheng Shan, or the "Mountain of the Green City," a revered Taoist holy site. Here, we traverse forested paths that unveil caves, pavilions, and venerable wooden temples that speak to the mountain's spiritual significance. Lunch is included during our explorations.Our day ends with a visit to Jiezi Ancient Town, where the cobblestone streets and historical architecture tell tales of over a thousand years. Day 14 - Chengdu - Miao Village - Zhaoqing
We begin our day with an early train ride departing at 7:38 a.m., covering nearly a thousand kilometres in just over five and a half hours, speeding through stunning mountain scenery. As we enjoy a picnic lunch on the train, the landscape reveals the beauty of an area less traversed by tourists. Upon reaching Congjiang, you'll find yourself in a captivating region of China, rich with diverse ethnic minorities. Our first stop is the Basha Miao Village, located in the midst of lush forests and known for its distinctive wooden houses. Here, the Miao people uniquely maintain the tradition of bearing firearms, a nod to their heritage as bear hunters. Our journey continues to Zhaoxing, the main settlement of the Dong minority, celebrated for its enchanting collection of over 800 traditional homes; many consider it the most picturesque town in all of China. You'll find accommodation in this idyllic setting, perfect for soaking in the vibrant cultural tapestry of the region.
Day 15 - Zhaoqing - Guangxiao - Chengyang - Longsheng - Guilin
Today, you'll embark on one of the most captivating and scenic legs of your journey. The day begins in Guangxiao, a charming village among the stunning wooden architectural wonders of the Dong ethnic group. One of the highlights is the enchanting suspension bridge that spans the local river. This town, relatively untouched by global tourism, remains a hidden treasure. Moving on, we'll explore Chengyang, famous for its remarkable "wind and rain bridge"a testament to the craftsmanship and cultural significance of the Dong people. Lunch is included as you soak in these unique landscapes.Our journey continues to Longsheng, home to the magnificent Longji rice terraces, which are recognised as a World Heritage Site. Here, a small bus will transport us to several vantage points offering awe-inspiring views of the terraces. In Guilin, you're in for a full day of exploration. Known for its charming lakeside atmosphere and lively shopping streets, this city sits alongside the scenic Li River and offers a delightful backdrop. Our itinerary includes a visit to the Reed Flute Cave, where you'll find spectacular stalactites and stalagmites beautifully illuminated, creating an enchanting underground world. The afternoon is yours to enjoy at your leisureyou might consider visiting the Jingjiang Palace, a 'miniature Forbidden City' that showcases historical architecture within its walls. Please note that while the sequence of activities in Guilin may vary, the essence of this captivating city is sure to remain consistent. Accommodation will be arranged in Guilin.
Day 17 - Guilin - Li River Cruise - Yangshuo - Huangyao - Guangzhou
We will set off from Guilin for a picturesque cruise along the Li River, where you will be captivated by the stunning scenery of verdant mountains and quaint villages lining the banks. As we glide through these breathtaking landscapes, you will be amazed by the unique rock formations and distinctive peaks. Lunch will be provided during the journey. Upon docking, we will arrive in Yangshuo, a vibrant and popular tourist town, perfect for a leisurely stroll to absorb its lively atmosphere. Our adventure continues to the rural charm of Huangyao, where you can wander through its well-preserved ancient streets, admiring the historical buildings and temples that echo a different era. Experience the daily life of the locals as we delve into this time-honoured setting. We will then proceed to Guangzhou, arriving by the end of the day.
Day 18 - Guangzhou - Zhuhai - Macau
In the vibrant city of Guangzhou, our day begins with a two-hour guided tour, allowing us to experience the dynamic blend of tradition and modernity that characterises southern China's metropolis. Well stroll along Shangxiajiu Street, where a traditional marketplace buzzes with life, and explore the historical House of the Chen Clan, a significant cultural relic from the late 19th century. Our tour will also take us to the picturesque riverside area, providing a glimpse of the citys charming water vistas. After the tour, you'll have some free time to explore at your leisure before we meet again for lunch, which is included today.During the afternoon, we will travel to Zhuhai, situated on the China Seaa journey that allows us to pause and admire the striking architecture of the Opera House, inaugurated in 2016, which dramatically symbolises both the sun and the moon. Our travels then take us to Macau, where a border crossing marks our entry into this vibrant region known for its lively casino district. These casinos, often reminiscent of those in Las Vegas, create an exhilarating atmosphere thats sure to captivate. Day 19 - Macau - Hong Kong
Today, we'll explore Macau, a city where East meets West, evident in its rich history and diverse architecture. Once under Portuguese administration from the 16th century until 1999, Macau's heritage is reflected in its historic centre, designated a World Heritage Site. Our tour will guide you through ancient churches, civil buildings adorned with traditional tiles, a formidable fortress, and China's oldest lighthouse. After some leisure time and an included lunch, we will continue our journey across the impressive Hong KongZhuhaiMacau Bridge. This engineering marvel, spanning over 30 kilometres, features multiple bridges and a 6-kilometre tunnel with breathtaking views over the China Sea. We will pause at a scenic platform to admire this testament to human ingenuity. Upon arrival in Hong Kong, we'll settle into our accommodation before embarking on the Star Ferry. This iconic ferry ride across Hong Kong Bay offers a spectacular view of the city's illuminated skyline from the water. After enjoying the stunning sights, we'll return to the area near our hotel for dinner, which is included in tonight's experience, before settling in for the night. Day 20 - Hong Kong
Following breakfast, we'll embark on an exploration of Hong Kong, beginning with its bustling financial hub, home to numerous towering skyscrapers. Our visit takes us to the History Museum, where we'll gain insights into the city's past, including its colonial era and experiences during the World War. Next, we'll stroll along the Avenue of Stars on the dockside, celebrating the icons of the film industry. Experience the stunning skyline from the water as we take the Star Ferry across Hong Kong Bay, before ascending Victoria Peak by bus. At 552 metres, the peak affords panoramic views of the entire city, a sight best appreciated once we've returned via the historic Peak Tram. Following our morning adventures, you'll have the afternoon free to continue exploring Hong Kong at your leisure.
