Day 1 - Sofia
Welcome to Sofia! Upon your arrival at the airport, you will be whisked away to your hotel, where youll receive essential information about the beginning of your tour. At around 3:00 p.m., we invite you to join us for a guided exploration of Sofia, the vibrant capital of Bulgaria. During our city tour, you'll encounter landmark sights such as the grand Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the elegant Russian Church, and the historic Mosque. We'll also stroll through the city's squares and avenues, showcasing their distinctive Stalinist architecture. Following the tour, the remainder of the day is yours to explore Sofia at your own pace. Feel free to delve into the city's cultural richness or simply relax and soak in the local atmosphere. Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2 - Sofia - Bachkovo - Plovdiv
We begin our day in Sofia, heading to the peaceful surroundings of Bachkovo Monastery, Bulgaria's second most significant monastic establishment, founded in the 11th century. Set against the serene backdrop of the surrounding landscapes, the monastery features three distinctive churches, offering a tranquil escape. Afterwards, we proceed to Plovdiv, one of Europe's oldest cities. Here, lunch awaits before we embark on a guided exploration of the city's rich history. You will encounter the impressive Roman Amphitheatre, discover the intriguing Old Pharmacy, and admire the beautifully preserved Armenian House.
Day 3 - Plovdiv - Kazanlak - Shipka - Etar - Arbanasi - Veliko Tarnovo
Today, well journey through the breathtaking vistas of the Balkan Mountains. As we travel through the Rose Valley, our first stop will be Kazanlak, where entry to the replica of the Thracian Tomb of Kazanlak, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is included. Here, well also discover the art of producing rose-based productsa local speciality. Nestled in the mountains, well visit the Shipka Memorial Church, a significant site commemorating the Russo-Turkish War. Our exploration continues in the charming village of Etar, home to an ethnographic museum that vividly brings the past to life. After enjoying an included lunch, well head to Arbanasi, an ancient trading city famed for its fortress-like houses. In Arbanasi, our itinerary includes a visit to the Nativity Church, where admission is covered. Our day will conclude in the captivating, medieval town of Veliko Tarnovo, the former capital of Bulgaria, known for its scenic setting beside a dramatic canyon. Please note that occasionally, our visit to Arbanasi may occur on Sunday morning.
Day 4 - Veliko Tarnovo - Basarbovo - Bucharest
Today, we head to Romania, making a stop at the Basarbovski Monastery a remarkable pilgrimage site uniquely carved into the rock. Following this visit, we cross the border and the majestic Danube River before arriving in Bucharest around 1:00 p.m. In the afternoon, we embark on a panoramic tour of Romania's capital, delving into its historic centre and witnessing the grandeur of the Palace of Parliament, one of the world's largest administrative buildings. Afterwards, you have some free time to explore the city further at your own pace. Dinner is included to round off the day.
Day 5 - Bucharest - Sinaia - Bran - Sighisoara
Our day begins with a journey through Transylvania's stunning landscapes, travelling across the majestic Carpathian Mountains enveloped by lush forests. Our first destination is Sinaia, where well enjoy a peaceful walk through the exquisite gardens surrounding the Peles and Pelisor Castles. These castles are notable for their exquisite architecture and historical significance. Following this, we'll make our way to the imposing 14th-century Bran Fortress, famously referred to as Draculas Castle. With your entry tickets already arranged, you can immerse yourself in its intriguing history.After allowing time for lunch, we'll journey to Sighisoara. This charming medieval city, encircled by fortified walls, is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offering a glimpse into the past with its beautifully preserved architecture and vibrant streets. As evening falls, well be treated to a special dinner at Count Dracula's restaurant, located in the very house where Vlad the Impaler often associated with Dracula folklore was born.
Day 6 - Sighisoara - Biertan - Sibiu - Hunedoara - Timisoara
Today, we delve deeper into Transylvania, where you'll discover an area known for its historical fortified churches, many of which were established by communities of German origin. A visit to the UNESCO World Heritage Site in Biertan is included, offering a glimpse into this unique cultural facet. Following this, we proceed to Sibiu, a place once regarded as the capital of Transylvania, notable for its vibrant cultural scene and economic significance. You'll have the opportunity to explore its captivating streets and squares, with time set aside for lunch. Our adventure continues in the afternoon with a visit to the magnificent Hunedoara Castle, known as the most stunning castle in Romania, where entry is provided. We then make our way to Timisoara, where you will have a chance to wander through the sophisticated central squares of the city.
Day 7 - Timisoara - Belgrade
On our seventh day, we set out for Serbia, crossing the border and embarking on a three-hour drive to Belgrade. Upon arrival, we'll immerse ourselves in this vibrant capital, strategically located where the Danube and Sava rivers meet. Our exploration includes a panoramic city tour, taking in the energetic city centre, the impressive parliament, and a stroll through the historic Kalemegdan Fortress. As part of our visit, we'll stop by the Museum of Yugoslavia, which houses Titos Mausoleum, offering a glimpse into the region's complex history. In the afternoon, you are free to discover Belgrade at your own pace, delving deeper into its rich culture and lively atmosphere.
Day 8 - Belgrade - Fruska gora - Sremski Karlovci - Novi Sad
Following breakfast, we depart for the natural splendour of Fruska Gora, celebrated for its breathtaking landscapes and historic Orthodox monasteries, with some dating back to the 12th century. Our visit includes the Krusedol and Novo Hopovo monasteries, both established by the significant Brankovic family. We then proceed to Sremski Karlovci, one of Serbias oldest towns, first documented in 1308 as Karom. The town's well-preserved historic centre boasts charming neoclassical structures. Here, we explore the Museum of Beekeeping and Winery ivanovi?, where lunch and a wine tasting are included. Our journey continues to Novi Sad, Serbia's second-largest city, beautifully situated on the Danubes banks. Known for its eclectic architecture that hints at its rich cultural past, Novi Sad is home to the impressive Petrovaradin Fortress. This 18th-century military marvel, often dubbed "The Gibraltar of the Danube," is among Europes largest fortifications.
Day 9 - Novi Sad - Viminacium - Manasija - Nis
Today, we embark on a journey south through Serbia, with our first destination being the archaeological site of Viminacium. This ancient Roman city once thrived with a population of 40,000, and we'll have the opportunity to explore the remnants of its roads, temples, plazas, amphitheatres, palaces, hippodromes, and thermal baths. Admission to the site is included, allowing us ample time to admire these incredible historical remains. Following Viminacium, well visit the Manasija Monastery, a significant monument of medieval Serbian culture. Its formidable exterior, surrounded by towering walls, shelters a church that still boasts 15th-century frescoes, a testament to the artistry of the time. Our journey continues to Nis, Serbia's third-largest city, known for its rich Roman heritage. The city is famously recognised as the birthplace of Constantine the Great. We will spend the night in Nis, providing an excellent opportunity to delve further into its historical significance and vibrant culture.
Day 10 - Nis - Zica - Studenica - Kraljevo
Today's journey takes us to the historical Zica Monastery, a significant Orthodox site dating back to the early 13th century. Known as the Coronation Church, it witnessed the crowning of seven Serbian kings. Following our exploration there, we continue to the majestic Studenica Monastery, the largest in Serbia, beautifully nestled in the mountains. Founded in 1190, the monastery's stunning architecture and Byzantine frescoes lining its interiors are sure to captivate you. We will include lunch during our visit. After our monastery tours, we'll make our way to Kraljevo, a charming town located in central Serbia, surrounded by picturesque mountains. Known for its rich history and culture, Kraljevos main square features a striking monument dedicated to Serbian warriors, offering a fitting end to our day before we retire for the night.
Day 11 - Kraljevo - Ravanica - Oplenac - Belgrade
Today, we set off for Ravanica to visit its monastery, which features a stunning five-domed church. This site offers a glimpse into the spiritual and architectural heritage of the region. Our journey then takes us to the village of Topola, steeped in history and renowned for its regal connections. On Oplenac Hill, we will explore St. George's Church, established by King Peter I of Yugoslavia. This church is notable not only for its architectural beauty but also as the resting place of the Serbian and Yugoslav royal family, holding significance in the region's history until 1945. We will conclude our day by returning to Belgrade.
Day 12 - Belgrade
After breakfast, our journey concludes, leaving you with a treasure trove of wonderful memories to cherish.
