Day 1 - Sofia
Welcome to Sofia! Upon arrival at the airport, you'll be transferred to your hotel, where you'll receive details regarding the start of your tour. Around 3:00 p.m., we will embark on a guided tour of Bulgaria's capital. You can look forward to discovering Sofia's renowned landmarks, including the impressive Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the majestic Russian Church, the Mosque, and the city's squares and wide boulevards, which are notable for their Stalinist architecture. Afterwards, the remainder of the day is yours to explore at your own pace and soak up the citys unique atmosphere. Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2 - Sofia - Bachkovo - Plovdiv
Today, we set off in the morning to visit Bachkovo Monastery, Bulgaria's second-largest monastery, founded in the eleventh century. Known for its three churches, the monastery offers a tranquil setting perfect for reflection. We continue our journey to Plovdiv, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Europe. Here, lunch is provided before we embark on a tour of this culturally rich city. Our exploration includes visits to the Roman Amphitheatre, the Old Pharmacy, and the Armenian House.
Day 3 - Plovdiv - Kazanlak - Shipka - Etar - Arbanasi - Veliko Tarnovo
On day three, we will travel through the breathtaking scenery of the Balkan Mountains. Our first destination is the Rose Valley, where well explore Kazanlak. Here, you'll gain access to the replica of the Thracian Tomb of Kazanlak, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and discover the local craft of rose-based product manufacturing. Continuing through the mountains, well visit Shipka Memorial Church, which stands as a tribute to the Russo-Turkish War. Our journey then takes us to Etar, a delightful village that doubles as an open-air ethnographic museum. After enjoying an included lunch, well head to Arbanasi, a historic trading town noted for its robust, fortress-like houses. We'll visit the Nativity Church here, with entry included. Our day concludes in the former Bulgarian capital, Veliko Tarnovo, renowned for its charming medieval centre nestled alongside its canyon. Please note that the visit to Arbanasi might occasionally occur on Sunday morning.
Day 4 - Veliko Tarnovo - Basarbovo - Bucharest
Today, we journey into Romania, pausing en route to explore the Basarbovski Monastery, an intriguing pilgrimage site carved directly into the rock. Crossing the border and then the mighty Danube River, we anticipate arriving in Bucharest around 1:00 p.m. In the afternoon, well embark on a panoramic tour of the city, showcasing its historical centre and the grand Palace of Parliament. Following this exploration, you'll have some free time to wander and enjoy Bucharest at your own pace. Dinner will be provided, offering a chance to reflect on the day's experiences and enjoy local cuisine.
Day 5 - Bucharest - Sinaia - Bran - Sighisoara
Our adventure takes us through the breathtaking landscapes of Transylvania today, as we journey across the Carpathian Mountains and verdant forests. Our first stop is Sinaia, where well enjoy a leisurely stroll through the gardens of Peles and Pelisor Castles, each offering a glimpse into Romania's royal past. We continue to the iconic Bran Fortress, famously known as Dracula's Castle, where entry is included for an immersive experience into its storied history dating back to the 14th century. After free time for lunch, our travels take us to Sighisoara, a beautifully preserved walled medieval town and a recognised UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the evening, well savour a special dinner at Count Dracula's restaurant, steeped in legend as Vlad the Impalers birthplace.
Day 6 - Sighisoara - Biertan - Sibiu - Hunedoara - Timisoara
Our journey continues through the heart of Transylvania, where we will explore the celebrated fortified churches, many of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Today, we will stop at one in Biertan, with admission included. Following this cultural immersion, we travel to Sibiu, a city rich in history and vibrancy, once the capital of Transylvania. As we meander through its bustling streets and charming squares, you'll have the chance to enjoy lunch and soak in the lively atmosphere.In the afternoon, we will set off to visit Hunedoara Castle, often considered Romania's most beautiful castle your entrance is included. Its impressive architecture and enchanting presence are not to be missed. Our day concludes with a journey to Timisoara, where youll have time to wander through its elegant central squares, enjoying the unique blend of architectural styles and lively ambience.
Day 7 - Timisoara - Belgrade
Well make our way to Serbia today, crossing the border on a journey of about three hours before reaching Belgrade. This vibrant capital, located where the Danube and Sava rivers meet, offers a host of sights. Well embark on a panoramic tour, exploring the lively city centre, viewing the parliament, and taking a leisurely walk through Kalemegdan Fortress. Our visit also includes the Museum of Yugoslavia, home to Titos Mausoleum. The afternoon is free for you to discover more of Belgrade at your own pace.
Day 8 - Belgrade - Sremska Mitrovica - Zvornik - Sarajevo
Today, we embark on a journey through the picturesque region of Vojvodina, beginning with a stop in Sremska Mitrovica. This historic city, nestled along the banks of the Sava River, was once an integral part of the Roman Empire as the capital of Pannonia. We include a visit to the grounds of the Imperial Palace of Sirmium, where youll delve into the rich historical tapestry of this fascinating location.Our travels then take us into Bosnia, where we pause in Zvornik, one of the country's ancient cities situated on the border-forming river with Serbia. Zvornik's past is marked by poignant memories of the Bosnian War and serves as a silent witness to history, near the village of Srebrenica, known for its tragic events. Here, you'll have an opportunity to enjoy lunch and take a reflective stroll before we continue on through stunning landscapes.As evening approaches, we arrive in Sarajevo, where you can explore the historic centre. The bustling bazaar captivates with its enchanting Ottoman architecture and oriental charm, offering a glimpse into the area's rich cultural heritage. Dinner is included, providing a perfect end to a day woven with history and scenic beauty.
Day 9 - Sarajevo - Mostar - Kravica - Dubrovnik
Our day in Sarajevo begins with a guided sightseeing tour of this captivating city often called the "Jerusalem of Europe" due to its vibrant blend of different religions. Well explore the rich tapestry of mosques, churches, and synagogues that reflect its deep cultural diversity. The tour will take us through its historic old town, where you'll experience the strong Ottoman influence, including a magnificent mosque that's over 500 years old and a serene fountain. Following our morning in Sarajevo, we'll journey through stunning landscapes to reach Mostar. This picturesque town is renowned for its historic centre and iconic stone bridge, which distinctly separates the Orthodox, Muslim, and Catholic communities. Here, you will have the opportunity to enjoy lunch and leisurely explore the charming streets. Our journey continues to Croatia, so please be prepared for some potential delay at the border. Well arrive in Dubrovnik by the end of the day, where dinner will be included, providing a perfect end to an enriching day.
Day 10 - Dubrovnik
Today, we delve into the enchanting city of Dubrovnik, one of Europe's marvels, renowned for its cliffside position and historic walls overlooking the crystal-clear Adriatic Sea. Our day begins with a guided panoramic tour led by a local expert, taking us through the city's stunning architecture and rich heritage. We'll visit the Franciscan Monastery, which houses Europe's oldest pharmacy, and the Assumption Cathedral. Following this, our itinerary includes a boat trip to Lokrum Island, a mere 15-minute journey away, where we'll explore the remnants of an eleventh-century Benedictine monastery, a setting featured in the Game of Thrones series. Later, you can wander at your leisure and soak up the city's atmosphere before returning to the hotel in the late afternoon. Dinner is part of our plans today. Note that during the months from November to March, when boat services to Lokrum are not available, this visit will not take place. Occasionally, accommodation may be arranged in the nearby coastal town of Cavtat.
Day 11 - Dubrovnik - Ston - Split
We'll set off in the morning, travelling along the stunning Croatian coastline, renowned for its breathtaking seascapes and islands. Our first stop will be Ston, a charming town known for its impressive walls, reputedly among the longest in the world. Continuing our journey through these captivating landscapes, we'll cross the magnificent Peljeac Bridge that spans the sea. Around midday, we will arrive in Split, where a local guide will lead us on a tour that includes entry to Diocletians Palace. We'll delve into this immense Roman complex, exploring its maze-like streets and enjoying stunning views of the sea. Dinner is included in the evening.
Day 12 - Split - Plitvice - Opatija
Today, we venture into Croatia's picturesque interior, traversing rolling hills towards Plitvice Lakes National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its mesmerizing collection of lakes and cascading waterfalls. Here, you have the option to wander through the park's scenic trails or opt for a delightful boat or train ride across the tranquil waterstickets are included for either experience. Following a relaxing afternoon and a chance to capture unforgettable moments, we will make our way back to the coastline, heading north. As evening approaches, we arrive in the charming resort town of Opatija, where you'll enjoy an included dinner and a comfortable stay, soaking in the lively atmosphere of this inviting destination. Note: At times, due to weather conditions or visitor volumes, the train or boat rides at Plitvice may be limited.
Day 13 - Opatija - Postojna - Bled - Ljubljana
Today, we venture into Slovenia, beginning with a visit to the renowned Postojna Cave, one of the world's largest cave systems. An exciting part of our exploration will be a train tour through its impressive underground formations. Afterwards, we proceed to the idyllic town of Bled, known for its stunning location by Lake Bled. We will take a boat trip across the lake to its charming island, home to a monastery with a notable bell tower and overlooked by a majestic medieval castle.Our day concludes with a journey to Slovenia's capital, Ljubljana, where we will embark on a guided tour to discover the highlights of this charming Central European city. Dinner will be included, allowing us to enjoy Slovenian hospitality.
Day 14 - Ljubljana - Venice
Start your day at leisure with a morning exploring the delightful centre of Ljubljana, the enchanting capital of Slovenia. As the day progresses, we'll journey towards the Adriatic Sea, crossing the border into Italy. By evening, we'll reach Venice and settle in the district of Mestre. Enjoy your evening in this charming area, which offers a relaxing introduction to the unique allure of Venice.
Day 15 - Venice
This morning, we will arrange a boat transfer to the heart of Venicea city of unparalleled charm, gracefully spread over more than 100 islands and linked by over 400 bridges. Our journey will take us to the renowned St. Mark's area, where well embark on a guided walking tour through this storied city of canals. Following the tour, youll have time to wander and absorb the atmospheric beauty of Venice at your own leisure. In the afternoon, you might choose to experience the quintessential allure of Venice with an optional gondola ride along its winding waterways.
